I've always just carried the helmet in its helmet bag as a separate piece in my hand and never had a problem. Fitting it inside a carry on will be a nuisance.

Duffle bag is the best option, I have been using that option from quite sometime. Put the helmet in it's cover and then put it in Duffle bag and carry it in the cabin.

Used Helmet bags and also once placed the helmet bag inside the duffel to reduce the number of separate units to handle and take into cabin.

You can do both!

Thank you both. I guess I will go with the helmet sleeve and duffle bag option. It's' not as convenient as a backpack but then looks like the most practical.

Re: Smart Rings - Are they the next best thing for health & fitness?

Any recommendations for a good windscreen? I tried looking at the Carbonracing one but the online reviews are not so great. I have recently started doing highway runs and the wind drag on the helmet is pretty tiring.

I am in a similar conundrum, was planning to take the helmet sleeve as well.
However i need to carry a backpack for my work laptop etc. and the helmet won't fit into that. Any idea if i can carry a backpack and a helmet bag as a carry on?
I'll be travelling from France btw, and the backpack might also contain some other riding gear hence cannot stuff in the helmet within it.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

I am looking for a helmet that my wife and daughter can use while riding pillion on city rides and occasional breakfast rides. Didn’t find many options for a size ‘S' helmet in a reasonable range; color preference is also a blocker.

Any suggestions regarding models and where I can find them in Bangalore (HSR, Sarjapur Road area)

KYT indian models come in XS for round heads. If you are unfortunate enough to have an oval head, be prepared to shell out for a LS2 thunder carbon. XS comes only in one colour though, black. If small is good enough, MT lids are also decent and have fantastic colour options. I feel MT lids are more oval than KYTs. Spend a day on the 27th main road in HSR.

MT Helmets have models in "S" size. Go back a couple of pages and see my posts.

The main problem with KYT is availability. Bangalore and other big cities may not be a problem but anywhere else in India it's impossible unless you buy online or ask a store to order it.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Got this SMK Typhoon, three days ago.
Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet-img_20241128_201931.jpg
I had enough of the horrible visor on the Vega Edge DX that I was using and above everything else, the warning note inside the helmet saying, "No protection for chin" made me decide to buy a better one with immediate effect. I looked at multiple options across MT, LS2, SMK, Axor, Korda, Axxis and the like.
While I did not have too stingy of a budget, I capped at 10k. This put LS2 out of commission. MT's rear designs didn't really resonate with me and Axxis went out of the list since most of the available ones were rated ECE 22.05 and not 22.06.
Korda Shockwave was in my radar quite strongly among my other considerations, the Axor Apex series, the SMK Bionic, Stellar and the Typhoon. I would've loved myself and SMK Titan but the carbon fiber model was a tad bit out of range.
I spent well over an hour in the riding gear shop I usually go to near the Reliance bazaar, Hosur. There were only Axor and SMK available at that time so I decided to check those out and see where things went.
The Apex, Stellar, Bionic and the Typhoon were available and immediately, I noticed that the overall build quality on the Apex was not up to par. Of course it was a very well put helmet but the edges were not as seamless as I expected.
The Bionic was quite a solid helmet but the size and fit wasn't quite right. While the stellar was perfect on the build quality, the safety on offer and even fit snug, I felt the fit and feel of the Typhoon was better. After trying on the Stellar and the Typhoon back to back multiple times, I settled with the Typhoon for 4.8k, a bit down from the 5.3k MRP
The helmet is heavy and there are no two ways about it. But the weight is quite balanced and once worn, it doesn't cause any discomfort. Wind insulation is quite good as well. Hopefully the longevity is good with this one. We'll see where it goes!

Got an Arai Tour XD5 for myself last month. One of the best fitting and well built helmets from my limited exposure.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

I was looking for a helmet for myself. Kind of likes the MT Revenge 2. But it’s ECE 22-05 and not 22-06. The guy at the store was trying to convince me that it’s Sharp 5 rated which is higher than ECE 22-06. I didn’t think that’s true.
Would like some advice here.

You will have to check with your airlines about two cabin bags, unless you make your laptop bag lighter and make it a hand bag, meaning you will have to keep it under the seat in worst case scenario.

Anyway, in my case a duffle bag worked very well. I could put quite a few things along with my helmet.

I guess i could carry a laptop sleeve and use a duffel bag to carry them both.
30L duffel bag probably?

Short answer: NO. Long answer:

Although we colloquially say "ECE 22.06 rated", it is not a rating. It's rather a 'standard' that either a helmet would pass or fail, as opposed to achieve 0-5/1-5 stars. Meaning, if the SHARP 5 was better than ECE 22.06, the MT would've passed it.

I haven't heard of this SHARP rating before, but after a quick google-fu, it looks like a 'rating' and strictly not a standard. Not a particularly impressive one at that, given that even their top rated helmet doesn't seem to include angular/oblique testing, which is arguably the most important requirement of ECE 22.06. They do make a mention of such a test in their Testing information page, but can't find any SHARP rated helmet with an oblique impact diagram on their page. Also, they say they do one of the three impact tests at a higher speed than the ECE 22.06 (8.5ms vs 8.2ms), but the requirement for colour grading on the diagrams tops out at ECE 22.05 speed (7.5ms).
Quote:
Green | Peak acceleration up to 275g: the ECE 22.05 test limit at 7.5 m/s
Why test at a higher speed, when the top colour grade only requires lower. Unclear how much 'weight' is given to this parameter, while giving a 5-start rating.

Personally, I'm not a fan of such ratings regardless of which country it is from. I'm of the opinion that it is more of a tool for "protectionist" governments, to retaliate other "protectionist" governments that inflict "free trade" on them, and of course, for lobbyists who most likely did the homework to craft such ratings. Standards, on the other hand, are only less of such a tool, as they require some really nerdy homework, and crafting ratings using the nerdy kid's homework usually 'does the trick' for the parties involved.

It means almost nothing to you, the end customer, except if you happen to find yourself between two different ECE 22.06 helmets, and go "hmm... I wonder what the British would reckon". Snarky cynicism aside, you can see what they say and ultimately 'rate' for yourself.
