Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Was on the lookout for a full face helmet since my current one, a HJC Cl-17, is near the end of its life. I do have a Scorpion Exo R1 Air, which i use only on those occasional trackdays.
Initially my plan was to update to a LS2 thunder Carbon which retails around 35k. Had seen a post ln reddit where it split open and saw some people claiming the construction was weak and so on and so forth. Since i am no expert , i decided to hold the purchase for a few weeks.
Meanwhile, I came across Scorpion's Exo R1 Evo Air(newer version of R1 Air) for a whopping 40% discount. Though i have ordered many a things from FC Moto, I was not sure about ordering a helmet due to the careless handling by our postal department. Decided to take the plunge anyway as i did not want to rely on a single helmet for both track and road use.
Took 3 weeks for the helmet to arrive and i got it for Rs 100 less than what i had paid for the same helmet 2 years back on an Indian Website. Great savings indeed.

Surprisingly, the package was intact and there was no usual crumpling or tear on the cardboard box. The Helmet box inside was safe and looked like it was handled meticulously all through its journey.
i paid Rs 23935 including shipping and conversion rates and customs charged me Rs 8926 making it a total of Rs 32861.
(Damn! I just checked the website and the price has gone down to 17K excluding shipping. It sells at 48% discount now)
The package has the usual extra dark visor and pinlock 70 and a helmet bag.
There is no noticable difference between the old and new model other than a weight gain of 100g.
Pics attached.

The helmet might be a tad heavy though I've never faced any problems with it.

Yes, it does come in different sizes, but all that's changed in two helmets is an inner lining which can be removed, cleaned and put back in. Ask for XXL.

My pick in that price bracket would be RE Drifter (or Axor Brute if you want a dd ring), both of these are copies of Bell Bullit, which is a retro styled helmet. They offer probably the best/largest field of view among full face helmets.

Of course, it is important to consider that MTs spares are significantly more expensive and that you would have to shell out 2k more for a pinlock firm if you so desire.
Thanks a lot for these insights.
Went ahead and purchased the MT Thunder 3 SV Pro on Wednesday. Overall it felt like a better buy than the Axor and also upon closer inspection, the build quality, fit & finish also seemed better on it. Now, have been going through some extensive break-in period with it by wearing it around the house for some time so that once I get my bike tomorrow, I can immediately start wearing the the new one.

Haha that's awesome, I pray that you have many more happy and safe miles with that helmet. Do share pictures here and provide us with your insights about the helmet too!

Thanks a lot!

Here are a few thoughts on the helmet:

1. It fits snugly. Have been wearing it at home a bit and I think it has completed at-least 10% of its break-in.

2. The finish is excellent and even the build quality is very European (sturdy with a nice thunk when you tap it). Even the Triumph sales Consultant was praising it.

3. Took a while to get used to the Double-D lock but now it takes about 15 sec to lock & unlock.

4. Have used the helmet with speeds at about 40-50 kmph with running in the city only at the moment. The ventilation is good, however there is some wind noise when the visor is kept open. Since, I'm new to a full face helmet, don't know whether it's a common phenomenon or some issue.

5. Will share some updates next week as I will be going on a weekend trip with the gear.

Here are some pictures for your consumption:

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Hey everyone. I need some suggestions with respect to my next Helmet.

So here's some background, I am currently using an Axor Apex helmet I bought 9 months ago which has served me well for 17000+ kms. I am looking upgrade to a new helmet around December specifically for touring. My major issue with the Axor is that there is a lot of wind noise past 90 kmph. I plan to still continue using the Axor for my daily 46 km commutes to office and back.

My budget is 15000 INR(ideally including the pinlock inserts).

My preferences are as follows:

1. I would ideally want to get a helmet which has a Double D ring locking system. I have read and seen several videos and articles which prove that an ECE certified ratchet system is just as good as a double D rings. But having used the Axor, I've become very comfortable with double D rings and I would feel very comfortable and safe if the helmet had a double D Ring
2. An internal sun visor would be an awesome add on. I have regularly used the Axor Sun visor while touring and it has made a big difference for me. So ideally I would like to get a helmet with one of these.
3. Reduced wind noise. Of course I am well aware that it is not possible to get a completely silent helmet especially at this price range. But I want the helmet I get to be a big improvement over my Axor helmet.

Here are the helmets I have shortlisted for now:

1. KYT NFR: This is my top choice as of now as it has everything I require. It has double d rings, an internal sun visor and has cool minimalistic designs as well. The only small hesitation I have is the fact that there are almost no reviews about this helmet almost anywhere on YouTube or other forums. If anyone here is using this helmet, please do give your views about the same

2. MT Revenge 2: This is another helmet I really like. It has the double D ring and I've seen reviews that it is relatively silent. But the main drawback with this helmet is that it doesn't have an internal sun visor.

3. LS2 Storm FF800 II: This helmet was my top choice until I found the KYT very recently. The designs of the graphics are absolutely gorgeous and this one has a lot of positive reviews online. People say that it is a really comfortable helmet with very little wind noise. It is also one of the very few helmets with the newer ECE 22.06 certification in India. So that's a huge positive. The only small thing which is preventing me from getting this helmet is the lack of a double D Ring system. As I am used to Axor's Double D system, I don't really want to move to a ratchet system.

Please give me your suggestions about which helmet to choose. Any other helmet suggestions in the same price range are very welcome. Thanks in advance

kurian_john, if you are happy with the Axor Apex helmet, then do yourself a big favour and buy ear plugs to eliminate the wind noise. You can go for the el cheapo but super effective 3M ear plugs which will cost you Rs 20 per piece or you can get one of the big brand products that will cost you around Rs 2,000. I use the former and many of my riding buddies use the latter. They all work very well.

Either way, you can save yourself a whole load of money, and continue touring with your Axor Apex without worrying about wind noise.

The helmet graphics look quite attractive. I have the original Thunder 3 which came out years ago, and this certainly looks like a decent upgrade. MT haven't increased the prices too much, either.

Yes, all the Thunder 3 Pro graphics were very cool. They even had a Isle of Man version that looked amazing but it was in matte finish which is a pain to maintain in Thane's infra development environment.
I had shortlisted this and a red/black/grey that might have gone well with my S400, but ultimately went ahead with the white one as its graphics were better and also looked pretty cool in the light.

Dunno about the original one's pricing but this one cost INR 6,800 with no discounts.

Anyone bought a helmet from Thailand? Can you please guide me to a store where I can buy one for myself? I will be going there in Dec 1st week.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

I am looking for a helmet to do my first L1 trackday and do not want to be disallowed at the track because my current helmet (Axor Apex) is one size too big (bought it when I did not know much about helmet fit). Went to a few shops and the helmet ban means there are only KYT, MT and LS2 helmets. Since the track school guys insist on a D ring and no sun visors, I cannot buy the ECE 22.06 certified MT thunder 4, similar story with most LS2 and KYT models. My only options are KYT NZ race, MT KRE, LS2 Thunder C, LS2 Thunder Carbon, all starting at 33k-45k. Out of these, the cheek padding on the NZ race on small size was not snug enough even on first wear and no one has XS size. Apparently each helmet needs to get certified separately for each (colour, size) variant and why Powersports said they will not be stocking a non medium, large sized KRE anytime soon.

Only the small size LS2 Thunder C fits me but I am not entirely sold on buying a helmet for 34k when I am not sure I will be doing trackdays on the monthly. LS2 pulling stuff like this is not particularly confidence inspiring either. I cannot find these graphics on their international website. Overall, it feels very sketchy considering fake LS2s were rampant a few years ago.
Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet-ls2scam.png

Powersports mentioned that the MT Revenge 2 got ECE 22.06 certified a couple of weeks ago but those stocks would take until april next year. I tried the current one in small size and this was by far the most snug fit out of all the lids I tried. I heard from KYT dealers that MT helmets are quite a bit louder (I wear ear plugs on highway rides, I just do not want the lid screaming at me in some wide 4 lane roads in the city) than KYTs. The sales guy at Powersports did nothing to allay those fears and said that it depends on the head shape (fair enough). Perhaps the flusher cheek pads on the revenge might even make it quieter for me.

Alternatively, I could wait for a week and see if KYT releases the R2R Pro which was apaprently showcased in IBW last year, but I cannot find any references to it in their european website. According to the indian website, this is ECE 22.06 certified, comes with D rings for 17k, half the price of a NZ race. But it also comes with a sun visor, so I am not sure if they will allow this on the track and I am not particularly thrilled about getting an 'Indian spec' product either.

TLDR;
Should I
  1. Get a possibly fake or at least Indian spec LS2 Thunder C for 34k
  2. Wait for new stocks of small size MT Thunder 2 plus pinlock for 12k
  3. Wait, try a XS size KYT NZ race and get that for 34k
  4. Wait, try a R2R pro if the track guys allow lids if we remove the internal sun visor.

I would suggest you to skip the R2R pro since for 18k you are essentially getting a thermoplastic helmet.

I recently imported a helmet from FC Moto, but it does have some risk elements. If you are concerned about indian specs and genuinity of certain brands, I would suggest this.

I don't think trackday organizers are gonna fuss about helmets having internal sun visor.
Choose from MT Revenge or Thunder 2 if budget is a constraint. If nothing works out, try NZ race.

There was KYTs TT course which had double Ds in some models, but it's only ECE 22.05 certified.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

I'm looking for a beginner helmet. I have shortlisted a few like Axxis Segment, Axxis Draken, MT Hummer, Axor/RE Brute/Drifter.

I tried MT Hummer size M but the buckle was hitting my throat & size L as per the salesperson was not my size.

If anybody could tell me the difference between Axxis Segment & Draken & do axxis helmets run a size smaller or bigger or are true to size, no one in my city keeps Axxis helmets, so only option is online purchase. I really liked Draken in gloss white.
Generally size M fits me well(RE, Axor & SMK but only in MT size M seemed tight).
