My philosophy is to replace the helmet if I know there was an impact to it even if there is no visual damage. Either from a rider's fall from the bike, or even if it falls down from a bit of a height, such as from the top of a cupboard. The structural integrity may be compromised, so why take a risk. But a friend disagrees.

I never go beyond Studds/Steel Bird/Vega, but this chap buys more expensive ones, hence this disagreement from him.
The minor scratches and abrasions are fine; but I would strongly recommend to ditch a helmet that had a spill (no matter 0 or higher speed). Apart from the spill, I also recommend replacing the helmet after 4-5 years of use.

The visor never touches the helmet profiles. Check if the visor is properly attached and sitting flush on both sides of the helmet.
Opinions may vary...

Yes, I have tried fixing the visor in every possible angle. The scuffs were polished out once, and they reoccurred. In 16+ years of motorcycling, never have I seen a visor scratching the helmet in just a few days of ownership. I guess I also know how to use a helmet.

Also, like I mentioned, I saw the same issue on 2-3 more helmets being used by peers.

After the lube process, the mechanism has gotten smoother, a lot easier.
I have given it a thought, may be I shall order another new visor and see if that works as a solution.

I feel it is more of the MIC DROP, SNOB VALUE that this lid now holds.
Safety might be core, but for the price, you need to deliver perfection too. There are other equally SAFE helmets now on sale globally.

I’m looking to buy new helmets for us(me, daughter and wife) within a reasonable budget. Can you recommend some good shops around Kkd/Edply area.
rx100, these are the main helmet shops in Cochin, where you can find good quality helmets
- Autoqueen (Kaloor)
- DJ Helmets (Changampuzha Park)
- Biker Station (old SPG store, near the Kawasaki showroom)
- Republic of Bikers (Kathrikadavu)

I would suggest that you visit all 4 of these stores and see what helmets suit your preferences and budget.

parrys, I spoke to a couple of bikers who have the RX7V and their opinion was that the visor may not have been fitted properly, thereby leading to the scratches. None of them have ever faced any issues with their RX7Vs. However, since you mentioned that you have replaced the visor from different angles, it certainly does seem to be a genuine issue with your helmet. If possible, can you install a visor from another person's RX7V on your helmet and see if the issue persists? At least you will be able to narrow the problem down, before spending money on another visor.

I do need a smoked visor, so will be ordering that soon. So fingers crossed for that, to be the ideal fix.
Meanwhile, I might just add some thin sticker / decal / film here to prevent any further damage.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

After over a year of delays due to unforeseen circumstances I will finally be getting a two wheeler of my own in a few months.

I slightly updated had my old list from almost a year ago and was ready to try on and purchase the following gear:
  • MT Helmets Thunder 4 SV (ECE 22.06)
  • Viaterra Holeshot short cuff gloves
  • Rynox Cypher GT jacket
  • Rynox Bionic Knee Guards

Today I got an ad on Instagram for a company called Ignyte Helmets and their IGN-7 helmet that is ECE 22.06 rated for Rs 6,100-6,500. After further research I found that this was another premium offering from a household helmet brand (Steelbird) but they are the first in this segment (sub 8000) to offer an ECE 22.06 rating while all the others offer ECE 22.05 (Axor by Vega, SMK by Studds and cheaper MT helmets).

Does anyone on TeamBHP own one of these and/or can tell me how they're built as if these are good then that's amazing as they're half the price of the MT Thunder 4 SV (12,500-13,000) which is also ECE 22.06 rated.

Where do you plan to order the visor from? I used the helmet on the track with the light smoke visor and realized i need the smoke visor for sure on track. If reasonably priced, i may opt for the spoiler as well (just for the looks)

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Hello, OffPoynt here.
In 2022 October, I had bought the MT Thunder 4 Goblin from Bike Studio, KD Road, Mysuru in what is called the "Red" colourway (I got confused too, thanks to the fancy lights in the shop and jumped the gun a bit. I have a red bike)

Currently installed is a Raleri pinlock visor, which is made to fit this visor and comes with a Fog Resistance rating of 100 while also being photochromatic. Win win

With a Midland BT Mini Intercom installed

Here you can see evidence of UV rays fading away the paint. Can't really help it, I suppose

The rear view, pretty cool graphics

One of the best-looking bits on this helmet, MT calls this the AFCS (MT Airflow Channel System). Also, this was the first ECE R22.06 in India, IIRC

Jugaad Time

The MT helmet, while a gargantuan step up from my TVS Xpod (Axor Rage) helmet, has an issue which is the air rushing in from the neck area. The wind deflector (chin curtain) is installed, but I still wished it could be larger. And lo and behold, a solution I came up with in all of five minutes:

What this is, is a piece of a Decathlon Nabaiji small towel that I've cut out to roughly fit here.

Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet-mt-th4-jugaad2.jpg
The cloth is folded to the front before putting on the helmet, and then pulled to cover.
Wish I had gone as far as stitch this cloth to the wind deflector, but with availability of spares like the chin curtain and liners are a question (I don't see them listed on Powersport's website). I've just done this before typing this out, so I've yet to test if this works. If it does, it should significantly cut down on wind noise. (I ride a naked bike, a fully faired bike would be quieter with this helmet I think)

This helmet has been used as my daily, and on the occasions where my bike is in service, I've used this helmet with the family's Access 125 as well
It is incredibly comfortable, and I can wear it for hours without any pains, aches or fatigue. (i have a weird oval head because of childhood stupidity)

The vent system works very well. On a hot day, opening the top vent is akin to the barber spraying the water on your head for a haircut, it feels that cool.

Weight is, well, I don't really notice it. It is 1550gms. I've gotten used to it, so I don't notice it at all.

BTW @amvj same pinch

The recent video on ill effects of a chin curtain by fortnine. Even if you take the video with a pinch of salt, don't you think adding this much of chin curtain is too stuffy?

ECE 22.06 is the latest and upgraded standard, hence all new helmets seeking ECE conformation needs to meet 22.06 now. 22.05 is obsolete now. A day will come when all new helmets will meet the new standards.

In addition, this doesn't make the older helmets available, unsafe or inferior. Try out the IGN-7 if you can get hold of one. Sadly you can't try a new helmet on road (other than a friend's) to check wind noise ventilation etc.

On this platform, I hereby propose to helmet OEMs to provide Demo pieces of helmets which riders can test ride if he wants!

Coming back to your point, Thunder 4 SV should be a superior helmet compared to Ignyte. But helmet liners and contact points seems to wear off or start to show age sooner than expected. Check OffPoynt's helmet's lining at the base area, already showing signs of usage! Be prepared to change them, they're consumables for the helmet.

Furthermore, please increase budget for your riding jacket and consider riding denims instead of knee guards!

Ride safe,

@Thamps The chin curtain I've added is pretty loose and flappy, not rigid at all. TBH I might even remove it as a flappy chin curtain defeats the purpose. And for the CO2 issue, opening the front vent would solve it, I guess? CO2 being heavier will descend lower and get out through the small gap given by the chin curtain (it is not a 100% closed fit)

@surjaonwheelz, the signs of usage come from my Rynox Air GT3 jacket. The jacket has a pretty tight neck and neck strap, which meant on long rides the neck strap would come free, and as the velcro patch was on it it would rub against the base of my helmet while riding and that gave the marks you've seen. For reference, check the other side, it is pretty clean. As for the liners not looking clean, I've done close to 7k km with this helmet, I think it is to be expected. A wash should restore it to former glory.

Sebring, can you please share your experience with this helmet. I am planning on buying one. Since this is a race helmet, i wanted to know how comfortable this is for touring purpose. I also do track session but mostly it will be used for touring purpose and 2 track session in 1 year.

Thanks a lot.

I bought the LS2 FF800 today from a store and the guy was very confident about the ECE rating.

While driving back I started getting worried and your post has helped me relax. Thanks a lot.

You're welcome bb! Glad I could help. Did you find the 'E' label on your helmet chinstrap?

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

I know it's off topic here (already posted in the bluetooth headphones thread) , but cross posting in this thread as well since I expect more reach.

Is there a Bluetooth earphone available which can be worn while wearing a helmet? One which doesn't rub against the lining and can be worn inside the balaclava.
The common ones available juts out of the ear and is painful to use in a helmet.

I tried that idea with my Galaxy Buds+, which are on th smaller side, don't poke out much. It didn't work, because it's impractical. Putting on a helmet is bad enough, you gotta jiggle it around to keep everything in place, but the main trouble comes while taking the helmet off. The buds got stuck between the lining and the ear, and took a whole lot of shoving and rotating to get them out. For a well fitting helmet, any earbuds just won't work.
