Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Received the MT Revenge Tricolor helmet(size L ) purchased from Moto 101 store , Pune . Cost 5150 + 500 for shipping . The store was suggested by fellow member Dkalke who recently purchased a MT helmet . My experience has been very good , shipped on the same day and for people like me who don't have the luxury of local stores stocking good helmets , consider them as an option .

Distinct Helmet features -
DOT and Sharp 5 rated .

Has a NFC chip embedded at the chin . A phone (android only ) with NFC after installing the NFC nearvox app can be configured to automatically send sms to some selected numbers as well as GPS co-ordinate ( GPS data from phone reading ) by bringing the phone near to the chin area . There is a 10sec countdown so that you can cancel the SMS if activated by mistake .

Weight is 1450g ( doesn't feels heavy though ) .

My feedback(3 days and 80km riding so far ) -

It looks good , it feels good and it wears good .

The shell looks sporty and is huge , attracting stares ever since I started wearing it and I ride a duke 390 which is a stare magnet by itself .

My crown measurement is 57.5cm , large starts from 59cm but my previous experience and prescription glasses meant I went a size up . Fit is very tight right now ,slightly uncomfortable around the chin but I expect it to bed in . There are no gaps present though at top of the head (the fit/pressure is uniform from all directions , slightly more around the chins - and no I don't have chubby chins ), putting and removing the glasses is a delicate job .

I admire the strap system , very easy to engage and dis-engage and feels secure .

The NFC tech is cool , regret only android is supported as I use a windows operating system phone (nokia ) . The app is question is not MT/helmet specific , the devs have only published it for android so nothing MT can do about it . Quite surprising as NFC is a common tech and expected it to be on WP8 as well . IOS(apple ) doesn't gets it because their phones don't support NFC ( from what i read) .

The vents can be closed by sliders present ( is this a common feature ? ) , the sliding action is smooth and secure . Airflow is very good though it is quite cold here so cannot comment on comfort , over a certain speed , expect it to not get stuffy during warm/hot weather .

The visor is closed/opened by a 5 stage ratchet system , the action could have been smoother(desirable) . Room for improvement here but it is acceptable . It is removable of course .

Slight wind sound at high speeds(80 + ) but not distracting . The engine sounds different with the lid on , I like the somewhat muted growl better . The KTM is a very coarse sounding bike and this is an improvement I like .

The quality of the fabric of the liner is good , doesn't feels cheap . Graphics are clean . It looks sporty but sober(I cannot stand loud obnoxious graphics , normally prefer clean helmets but this is an attractive helmet ) , color combination is similar to Honda scheme so this should go well with your CBRs .

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Good buy basuroy, MT helmets are the best option out there right now for a 4-7k budget in my opinion. I have used a SOL SL68SII Metal Man for the last 30k kms, and it's awesome. However SOL parts and visors are very hard to find, whereas everything for the MT is available easily and cheap.

That NFC thing looks like a gimmick to me, haven't ever tried using it though. How easy is it to send that message?

Having said that, I don't like most of MT graphics schemes, but that's nothing a wrap can't change

Congrats. This is the lid I originally planned to purchase seeing online, but bought another as not all designs are published online.

I too wear specs, but I got a medium anyway. I don't know about your glasses but mine are small enough not to interfere at the edges. And for the intended bike, I do need snug fitting helmet. I reckon you may find it a problem later if/when you do high significant 3 digit speeds.

Yep everyone said they are value for money product so went ahead (budget was 5k ), this being my first sports helmet and completely satisfied with the lid .

Yes it is a gimmick of sort . I was not aware of it during purchase and wont call it a main selling point , I was quite surprised when i saw the GPS logo on the lid . I assumed they sell an additional gps module or something that can be fitted into the helmet , on contacting the seller , I was told there is a NFC chip embedded .

I have not tried sending sms , all 3 phones at home are nokia . Based on the procedure , you save the sms you wish to send and the numbers and then bringing the phone near the chin will automatically trigger the app and a 10sec countdown later sends the sms . NFC has to be kept on ,not sure if it works with locked phone .

Yesterday I got a new pair (with sleeker/almost straight stems ) , previous was 2 years old anyways . They don't interfere around the edges , just putting them on is a delicate task and fit is very tight around the head as the helmet is very tight right now . Expect it to loosen up a bit over time . I have hit triple digits few times to check the effect ,helmet didn't move around .

Hey buddy. Why not goto Option Performance in Porvorim, besides PMC bank opp to Hyundai used cars showroom (just before starting of Giri slope) He stocks KYT and a few other brands.

And yeah KYT helmets are good for the price point. They offer double D-Ring strap closure which is far better in safety in case of a crash than the strip-lock system.

Want an opinion from the premium helmet users!!

Been owning Daijya Dragon for more than 3 years, Sparx S-07 Stars & Straps for a little over a year. Now since I have got a Duke 390 these helmets have started showing their flaws for those high speed rides. So I decided to buy a premium helmet and to my luck have picked up a Bell Rs-1 Emblem for $210 (MSRP $455) on a closeout.

So is my choice a good one? Or should I pick any other good brand in max of another $350?

Kindly let me know . Thanks in advance

True that only if you compare it to SOL or MT. But comparing it to Studds or Vega or even the LS2 it is far better in build according to me. And D-Ring is added plus point.

A question for guts who purchase helmet of exotic brands in clearance sale. How do you manage to procure replacement visors? Do you buy a couple of spare ones along with helmet?

Bell is great quality stuff, and the price rocks. Don't think too much if you are getting the right fit.

Safest to buy at least one spare visor when you buy the helmet. That way you will not be left in the lurch, since getting visor replacements is not always guaranteed even if you are buying a generic brand. This applies irrespective of whether you buy a Studds/Vega or premium exotica.

short review on MT Blade

@Sagar - the big brands also sell spare visors , clear, tinted, iridium coated. It's just that the cost of the visors seems to rise proportionate to the helmet. An INR 2000 helmet like Vega has an INR 400 visor, an INR 4000 helmet like my MT has an INR 800 visor and an INR 20000 helmet has an INR 4000 visor (AGV, Shoei or such).

My 2 month feedback on my MT Blade helmet :

This not being my daily helmet (still using the old Cross), I wear it only on the weekend rides on the De-tuna. The quality is good, though I wish the EPS liner wasn't so openly visible. That doesn't necessarily mean it's unsafe, just not very aesthetically pleasing.

Wind noise is quite prominent at 3 digit speeds. Visor clarity is very good, the view port quite nice too, I find no vision problems. Also, though it's a snug fit, it does push back a wee bit against the head with wind pressure, which I felt on the ride today. No buffeting or shake though.

The visor on-off process is very quick and simple too. Better and easier than any of my previous helmets ( Studds Interstellar, Bieffe BR15 , AGV Pacific and Cross Outlaw ).

The double-D ring is a bit off a bother, but that's not MT specific as far as I can say.

So now to purchase comfortable ear plugs.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Picked up a White MT Revenge in Limited Evo graphics, size L, from Megha Enterprises, Lalbagh today. Picked up a visor as well and a total of Rs 4900 well spent.
Coming from a GPR, the MT feels very light and airy; though I need to get used to the slightly different field of view.

Edit: Picked up the non-NFC model retailing for 4150 Rs.

Wife is in need of helmet to ride her Wego. Are there specialised ones or all the helmets are unisex? Looking only for full face helmet and not the so called ladies half face ones. Any suggestions?

Any recommendations? The one I got has hard plastic ends on the outer side which foul with the helmet liner and extremely uncomfortable. All the options I looked at are similar.

Re: Which Helmet? Tips on buying a good helmet

Any recommendations for a helmet for daily use - in the price range of 3k to 3.5k? Asking for a friend and I really didn't know any. He doesn't have an option of buying it from outside.

Heard that there are loads of fake LS2 helmets floating around. Any other suggestions?

I think helmets are unisex. For women the customization must be on the colors and flowers whereas the rest should remain the same.

Go with something that protects the head more than convenience. Half helmets are good only when your roads are good, people have some basic sense of speed and respect basic rules. In all other places, just be safe to maximize your chance of survival in case something happens or some stupid does something that puts you in danger.

Been using 3M corded earplugs from ebay/snapdeal since quite a while now, and they work flawlessly. Cost about 20 bucks a piece, usable for 2-3 days of 500+ kms riding, after which they become too dirty. All other options are either useless or too uncomfortable.
