Lovely picture, thanks for sharing.

The car looks to be a Chrysler - with the odd chance of it being something more exotic like an Auburn.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Karl is probably correct as always.

The Sirmour car looks like a 1931 Chrysler CG or Imperial Sedan-Limousine with maybe some custom mouldings

I wouldn't say R - 2, more likely to be SIRMOUR - 2, with the plate not being visible. If you zoom in, you can see the first letter S, the rest is blocked by a garland.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

In case you missed out on getting the original .....

Ilario can now offer you the same (albeit 1/43 scale) for only $ 400! Pretty convincing, even for a modeler like me.

Karl,

Not to contradict you, in my opinion, an Auburn sedan is not as exotic as a Chrysler Imperial sedan with a split windscreen as pictured here. Years back, a Chrysler Imperial (CL series tourer I think) was a Pebble Beach winner.

Re: How rich were the Maharajas before Independence! Cars of the Maharajas

Picture of a 1933 Minerva at a Dutch car show.
The text mentions the car destined to go to India for "Maharajah of Kollaput". Most likely they got the name wrong. Any ideas?

Should be Kolhapur ! They had a Minerva, probably still with the family

Yes Kolhapur is probably correct. I have seen the reference, never a picture. Thanks boybentley!

I am not sure the Minerva is still with them, the Maybach is for sure.

As info, below is a snippet from Automobile Quarterly 1964 (maynot be the same car - since year and "convertible" conflict with picture)

"Since Van den Plas was controlled by the same financial directorate that controlled the Belgian firms of Minerva, ... one, a convertible built on a 1929 chassis for an Indian maharaja, was finished in navy and upholstered in black lizard with all ..."

Also an earlier reference (The Motor 1930):
