Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

Here are pics of the new waterpump, front and rear coil spring pads from Germany and the new front wheel cylinders. Also a pic of the DINITROL compound (very hard to get in Kolkata and expensive too) that will be used to spray the inner parts of the chassis after drilling wholes in it. Sorry for the poor pic quality as taken from my phone. Camera got stolen

Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

It's raining parts and yesterday evening I got the large sub-frame rubber mounts (thanks Indrojit) and the smaller sub frame rubber mounts, gear lever rubber boot and trunk handle gasket from MB USA. Here are the pics. All these parts are coated with a waxy substance to preserve them.

Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

Hello,

Yesterday, the last 2 new front wheel cylinders came in, as the ones which were pictured and came in earlier were for a 220S Fintail. Here are the pics of the correct ones.

Prithvi

Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

Sir,

Hats off to you.

I am on a 1960 Mercedes Benz Fintail - 190D restoration since 5 years.

All i could achieve was

1) Full suspension overhaul - Now the suspension behaves like a nice Boat, very comfy
2) Engine work - Engine starts with a single crank, and runs damn fine
3) Tinkering - The Rust bucket it was is now a TANK,
4) Painting - Painted well, but needs one more round of painting sometime soon
5) Brakes - Completely overhauled, and brakes just fine
6) Wiring - Have completed 80% of the wiring as per original

But i am not able to continue on the project as i need
1) Front windshield
2) Chrome beadings all round the car

I have somehow failed miserably restoring this car. Need your guidance

Thanks Pavan. Try bikesncars@optusnet.com.au for the windshield and chrome trim parts. They might be of help. Take my reference.

Hey Amol,

Aah I see you have an excellent memory. I will send you the Hella lenses, both of them. They are brand new and should look great on your car. PM me or sms your postal address so that i can send it. But I need your help in locating a good condition speedo cluster in mph for my car.

Regards
Prithvi

Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

After a long search I have been rewarded. At last found one vendor who sells new replicas of Solex 34 PICB carbs for Mercedes 4 cylinder pontons!

I'm going to buy one of these for sure

Prithvi

Hi Prithvi, thank you your generous. Dont mail them they are too precious, I'll collect them from you when in Kolkata or when you come next to Bombay.

Can you post some pics of your speedo cluster as it is now.? why dont you just replace individual meters that have gone bad? Also should you not be having it in km/hr

I'll post some pics soon. Mine is a Euro model, imported from Germany, so should it be mph or kmph? If the latter, then there are a couple of good speedo gauges on ebay.

Thanks
Prithvi

Dear Prithvi, US spec cars should always have mph, German specs km/hr, I have found RHD with mix of both mph and kmh. I think in your case it should be km/hr.

Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

Went to the workshop where my car is being restored after about 3 weeks gap. The trunk frame and floor is now in, just the last bits of the side panels are being done. After that, the doors, fenders etc. will be bolted back onto the frame to get the panel gaps right and then again removed for final tinkering. We also need to apply the seam sealant and the chassis cavity wax.

Also had the VDO foot operated windshield washer pump tested and it turns out that it works fine and activates the wipers at the same time as the washer, just like modern cars! Not bad if I say so myself.

What was virtually unrecognizable as the frame floor of the car is now neat and tidy. Here are some pics from my visit, please comment on the work.

Regards
Prithvi

Nice clean job, does the flooring pattern look different than stock. Post some more pics please. Is that a Rover P5 in the background?

Not the rover. That's a studebaker. The rover has been delivered and had also gone for the calcutta rally. It carries an Assam number now. Check on the statesman thread.
