Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

mbz180- I've not been here for some time now. It's nice to see the progress that you've made. The second green (the one you selected) is really a fantastic colour. Among the first set that you posted, I'd have chosen the black. If the green is the same - it does not look it.

Yes black and green are good choices. I think the first green posted by the mole was more pastel than solid.

Today after noon I made a short pit stop to the workshop my car is in, and was delighted to see the work and painting on the car, as the attached pics will show you:

Its either 16 for the floors and 14 for the chassis or 18 and 16 in that order.

Yay! I've been waiting to buy this VDO awindshield washer fluid bag from MB for a long time and here it is finally! Its supplied by the MB Classic Center and made by the original manufacturer VDO. Its a relatively small part, but will add to the fresh and authentic look during the engine bay detailing. Her are a couple of pics.

Wow looks really nice. Do you have a pic of a car with the fluid bag placed in it ?

Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

Just arrived from the US, a used but good condition water temperature gauge in working order ( tested it with a cup of boiling water!). I am in the process of buying used but good condition oil pressure and fuel gauges, apart from a max. 140 kmph speedometre. This water tempgauge is the most expensive of the 3 , the speedo gauge even being a little cheaper. Pics below:

Re: My 1958 Mercedes-Benz Type 180a Ponton

Hello, I want to get comprehensive insurance for my Merc. My Tata AIG agent says that they offer it but only if the car is a certified member of the VCCCI. Is this true? I figured after spending a small fortune in parts and restoration, it's best to have the car restored against theft and accidents. Already checked out the insurance thread but not much help from there.

Please forgive my ignorance regarding Pontons. Prithvi, This Car looks awesome. Is this a standard Ponton or some heavily done up version. Whatever it certainly looks like a menacing performer.

Hi Salil, What Prithvi has is a standard 180 Petrol, the 180 also came as a diesel which was called 180D. The other models in the four cylinder range were the 190 and 190D and the 190sl roadster.

The Six cylinder models started with the 220a and the 219 followed by the 220S. the more desirable in these models was of course the coupe and convertible models of which i think there is only one surviving example in India.

The luxury series in the Ponton range were the 300 badged cars, though in IMHO they are not true Pontons and were quite different in design and body style.

You can read more about the Ponton range of Mercedes car at Mercedes-Benz Pontons (1953-1962) © www.mbzponton.org

Hi Salil,

As the Mole has already said, the green car actually is a heavily modded hot rod. My car is a mundane standard petrol, of 1897 cc but it's quite peppy itself! Please check out pics of more standard Pontons at Mercedes-Benz Pontons (1953-1962) © www.mbzponton.org

Your car is turning up great. I cant wait to see it complete. Kudos to your patience and hard work that you are putting in to source all these original parts to the minutest detail. Superb.
