This Amby is one of the very few daily driver old cars I see in Pune now. There used to be so many, I would see them everyday. How quickly they have dissappeared in the last 2 years.

Nothing commands respect on the roads like a gleaming black old Amby!

During my recent tip to Mangalore, saw this Landy outside the 1000 pillars temple in Moodbidri.

Aloha, any idea if this is the original registration number? If not, any way to find out what?

Come over to Pune, she stands stoically outside a clinic in camp most days. We'll look up the good doctor.

Whether she is WBE 8921, I doubt. MTJ series ran from about 72 to 79(ish), and you say your car was sold in the mid 80s. Any idea who it was sold to?

Ambassadors sighted in Kolkata a few days back. They still sell. found the 1500 DSL BS III Five speed, based on the 1489cc BMC engine quite popular even as private cars. The silver and white cars in the second and third pictures are the 1500 DSL.
This is a taxi viewed from five floors above!

The mist silver colour on this brand new Amby looks quite cool. But the malodorous diesel exhaust is so blaccckk!:Frustrati

I came across this picture online some time back, showing a Ford Model B (?), an early Willys, and an Amby Mk 1 with Gypsy wheels. Shot in Hyderabad.

I had been to Kolkata recently, during the Durga Pujas to be precise. I came to know that as the older taxis are being phased (as per the Government regulations), there is a demand of about 20,000 taxis. But alas, HM has been able to supply only about a few hundreds till date. :Frustrati

no new posts...are we short of ambys??

anyway, a landy from its birthplace and i dedicate my 600th post to this beauty.clap:

The September sales figure for Ambassador cars was 684 units. Guess at least half or more may have been sold as Kolkata taxis.

Rare to sight a Landmaster in Kolkata these days. A levely way Amit to dedicate your 600th post. Its a greying beauty but needs TLC.

Another treat for early Amby lovers. 'spotted this pristine (although slightly garnished!) mk1 Amby at Secunderabad yesterday. It's got this now rare period 2-tone option.
'was the only pic. I managed to take, sorry.

Aside, I don't mind liking ambys in these colour schemes, rather than the more boringly common white, white and more white ones!!

Lovely Amby, oh how I love blue and white !!:)
Wonder what those roof mounted lights are for ? Never seen them on an ambassador. Plus, is it legal to have such lights ?!?

Beats me! Maybe the owner lives deep in some boondocks of the city, (as I do :( ) where there are no street lights....or could be simply for show! It's got a light or two fitted even at the rear.

Stanher liked the Mark I picture. Well kept and appears to be a daily use car. And I agree when you say the white ones are as you say too common among Ambys seen as on today. They don't have the same "traffic stopping" abilities for we classic teambhpians.
SuperSelect Those roof mounted lights are seen on many cars and SUV's in U.P., Chhattisgarh and elsewhere. I am not sure about the legality aspect, but there is nothing contrary in the MV Act 1988 to prohibit these fitments. Only some bulbs emitting light of other colours (including fluorescent ones) are prohibited from being used as headlights.

Spotted this ambassador with a beautiful shade of blue, complete in all respect. Before I could go and talk to the driver he drew off. Wheel rims are of Gypsy though + the tyres are radials.

Good one Manish. From above the wheel the car has been kept quite original as it appears. Its an original Bangalore number, from a bygone era when Bangalore was truly a garden city.
Usually old Ambassador Mark I bumpers are messed up and many have the changed Mark II or 3 bumpers that were flat on the top and bottom surfaces and a bit rakish. The Landmaster and Ambassador Mark I bumpers are rounded and this one appears to be original. The old Amby and Landy bumper guards acquired from somewhere and fitted to the Mark II or 3 bumpers give an odd look to those Ambys.
But this one is original!
