A 'choptop' as well!

Yes, Chandigarh initially did have only CH series plates, being a UT I guess.

Here's another car with CH plates-a Premier President (which incidentally was for sale on tbhp classifieds some time ago) :

Happened to see this VW Golf MK-I (or is it a II?) in Bangalore East, near Jeevan Bhima Nagar Main Road, in May '14.

Re: Classic Volkswagens in India

Saw this Type 2 recently at Parle West. I remember seeing a Beetle in a nearby building too a few years back. Maybe belonging to the same owner

Here's one MK2 Golf GTI that i restored couple of months ago.. Front grille is different as we could not source the double headlight grille.

Sports a Naturally Aspirated, 1.8 litre Petrol Engine.

Re: Classic Volkswagens in India

The Golf is well restored but it aint a GTI.

The GTI badge is on the wrong side. The red surround on the Golf 2 is on the top. This was the case for the Golf 1

The steering wheel is from a stock Golf. Seats have a wider check pattern. No golf ball knob on the gear shift lever.

Are these the Only Criteria to ascertain a GTI ??

The Red Surrounds do come on a GTI along with Black Fibre wheel arch flares, but the flares are no more in stock, but the car fenders do have the factory punches to fit them.

The Whole steering rack and others are from another version.

The seats are Original, but re-upholstered.

The GTI II got a full red surround trip, twin headlights, small chin spoiler, rear tailgate spoiler. Lower suspension, seats have a tartan trim with side bolsters to hold you in .. and of course a fuel injected 1.8 engine

Sorry, i beg to differ, There is much more than that. Volkswagen is probably The only manufacturer to have come out with varied versions of the same model for the particular year.

Re: Classic Volkswagens in India

Nice to see so many Volkswagens on the road still. I used to have an Orange colored Volkswagen Variant Squareback in 1978 in Kolkata. I wish I could have kept it. I sold it in 1983 to a Manipuri gentleman who freaked out on the color and the beautiful condition. Wonder what happened to the car finally.
