1946-1948 Chrysler

Hi.

I am the owner of a 1948 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible in Norway. You may wonder why I am posting on an Indian site. Well, for many reasons, one is that I used to work in India ten years back and have many friends there. I was in Bangalore as late as last week and picked up Premier Padmini parts for a guy restoring a 1962 Fiat here. Maybe next time Iīll be bringing parts the other way......its a small world.

I am trying to locate 1946-1948 Chrysler convertibles around the world to get an idea of how many are left, especially the New Yorker convertible (only made 3000 of them over three years, as opposed to the Windsor convertible - more than 11000 made). I see that Mr.Zaheer Vakil owns a 1947 Chrysler, and I have seen a blue 46-48 Chrysler 4-door sedan on a picture somewhere in this forum (maybe it is Mr. Vakilīs car). Does anyone know of 1946-48 Chryslers in India?

Also, it would be nice to get in touch with car collectors for future trips to India. Here is the link to our local club pages - you will not be able to understand anything, but can be fun to look at. We plan to translate the site to English soon;

BVK

Picked up the book about the automobiles of the Marahajas last week. What a great piece of work!

Welclome aboard Carl, you are in the right place. Not only do we share our passion, but our names as well

India has always loved the 47 Chryslers, they are amongst my favorite of all 47 models.

Vakils 47 Chrysler Windsor was bought new by the family if im not mistaken. BYF 5894 is a 47 Poona city registration.

BMY 6147 was bought new by the Jeejeebhoy family in Bombay. The car, also a Windsor, has been recently restored, and is housed in Poona with Rustom Jeejeebhoy.

The missing wheel trims and cover are in the boot!

BMY 8842, a new yorker, also belongs to Vakil (he may have sold it since I snapped these pics a couple of years ago.)

BMY 5763, a new yorker, im told used to belong to a wealthy Parsee family, the Wadias, back in the day, then went to Karl Khandalawalla, a prominent lawyer. It was then with Heerjee in Pune, and has since been sold to a friend of mine, who in turn resold it. Im sketchy on the details of this car.

More to follow.

BMY 4178 belongs to Abbas Jasdanwalla, a prominent collector in Bombay.

BMY 6000 also belongs to the Jeejeebhoy family in Bombay, and is a New Yorker convertible, probably similar to your car.

BMY 6220 belongs to one Ajit Gulabchand, and was entered in a recent car show where I snapped these pics. Though it is missing a few original touches, it appears to be a long wheel base Windsor, making it a very rare machine.

And now my two favorite cars.

BMY 5781, a Windsor, was purchased around 20 odd years ago by Pheroze Mehta. He is the most knowledgable person on 47 Chryslers, and owns 15 classics, mostly part of the Chrysler Corp. (Dodge, DeSoto, Plymouth, Chrysler). He is the man to meet, he will give you precise details of every Chrysler sold in Bombay and Poona, if not elsewhere.

His father, also the grandson of eminent freedom fighter Sir Pherozeshah Mehta, bought a brand new New Yorker in 47, BMY 6553, which is still with Pheroze. It was purchased to replace a 41 Chrysler the family owned.

The dash is still in original Paint.

A prominent collector in Delhi owns this New Yorker convertible.

UPU 5445, a New Yorker, used to be in Poona, I havent seen it lately though.

BMY 3419 is a 47 Chrysler being restored since ages in Poona. Note the DeSoto dash.

I think thats all the photos I have, though there are plenty more cars in and around Bombay. Imagine how many more there must be around the country!

EDIT-- Zaheer Vakil was restoring a long wheel base 47 as well sometime circa 2000. I wonder what happened there.

Whoops, how could I forget a very important name. Pranlal Bhogilal!

He has a 47 convertible New Yorker as well, Goa registered. I recall it being pink in colour.

Also, in Gujarat he keeps his 47 Town and Country.

I also keep hearing about a virgin Town and Coutnry in Poona, though Im told its been locked away for decades.

Thanks for all replies - keep them coming. Hopefully I can look up some of these cars next time in India.

I donīt know how this works out, but below (if I was lucky) you should see two pictures of my car.

Carl
