1970 VW Beetle Restoration - Delivered

Another VW, and my life is VOLKSWAGENIFIED to the core

There is a big history behind this car reaching Bangalore to me, To a Beetle that went on Sale, again being convinced not to sell, Going off the FOR SALE tag from the market, and now it comes from Kollam - Kerala all the way for the BUGSTOP touch

Brief- This Bug belongs to an aged gentleman called Mr Rahim Azad, whom i have never met till date, but feel extremely previlaged to have been entrusted to take care of his Beetle and to restore it to its original glory, and i am sure, i will not be disappointing him.

Body work 75% done and the car goes to the Mechanic for the much needed Mechanical overhaul.

Mechanically the car came totally unsound

1) Gearbox making wierd noises
2) Brakes not working and modified with the Maruti Omni
3) Engine tuning off
4) Steering column changed
5) Wheel bearings off
6) Rims Bent
7) Clutch not working / gear shift erratic
8) Suspension work at the front

back from the mechanical restoration, the A-Team did a quick job on the bodywork and drove the Bug to the paint booth - GT Tuners.

The shade decided was Orange and since The Original Volkswagen Papaya Yellow was easily available in Dupont, i decided its best to stick to Proved and Tested color rather than experimenting with it. so to match the Orange, we had to spray White as the Base coat in order to accentuate the Orange.

Finally Over the weekend the Beetle was painted and hopefully we might start the fitting and other stuff from midweek.

Kadam jee, your eye for detail is amazing, the color chosen is not a very common sight these days, i would love to get my VW worked upon by you if i ever own one, but then i will not restore i will evolve it .

great work buddy. For all I happened to be there when the car was being painted and frankly speaking the pictures do not do justice to the color and finish that was on the car in the booth.

Fantastic. This Beetle is near identical to the one I got as my own very first car some 36 years ago. Mine was this very yellow too. Glad to see you decided to keep it yellow. Very 70's.

I loved working on the Beetle. Everything is so easy to get at. Don't know how it is here in India, but parts availability in Europe and the USA is just unbelievable good. And you can get upgrades on just about anything.

I got a few little gadgets for my Beetle at the time. One was a magnetic switch operated clutch for the cooling fan. The fan is huge and draws a lot of power of the engine. Which doesn't have much power to start with. So you get this clutch installed. When you hit the switch it temporality disengages the clutch. You could set a little timer for so many seconds. Great help if you wanted to accelerate quickly. Made a power of difference!

Which engine have you got?

The body work looks in pretty good nick! You're probably aware, but the tricky part, rust wise for a Beetle is the bottom. If you have major rust anywhere in the bottom, you have a very big problem. That's what ultimately did my Beetle in. It just wasn't safe to drive anymore.

Well, long time since updates, the fittings have started, waiting for the upholsterer to complete his set of work, and since the seats are so botched up with a mix-n-match of Front VW & Rear Fiat seats, its becoming a task to re-fabricate them match the Beetle.

Great going! I was just visualizing chromed alloy wheels with oversize tyres on this one. Would look so awesome!

Budgetery constraints, hence cannot splurge on the alloys

Well, the upholstery sure took too long on this car, every thing had to be fabricated and re-done, But end of the day, happy with the outcome.

Few fittings that i got are of poor quality, leading to the delay in delivery, hopefully might deliver the car before weekend.

Woah nice! The stitches on the seats look good. Alloys can always come later. But the car looks stunning in that colour!
