Yup, the Cruze suffers from Turbo lag and the tall gearing just makes things worse for it.
TSK told me that 100kmph comes up at around 1700rpm in 5th so if you're below 100kmph and want to overtake, you can't just slam the acc and expect the car to move.
The 40-100kmph acc in 5th is the best example. Cruze takes 38 secs to do it which is very slow. OHC VTEC does it in 24secs.
So unless you're above 1700rpm, dont take a chance with overtaking.

I think people need to understand that each engine is different and based on the engine characteristics, one has to drive the car. Then you will get best, FE, overtaking, in gear acceleration etc. If you cant be bothered with all this, give the car to a driver lol.
Everybody was cribbing to glory about Optra diesel, myself and Rudra have driven it and it was one of the most mind boggling diesel acceleration one can enjoy according to us. Same happened to Vidyut when he TD Cruze, mind you he has done TD's of almost all indian cars in production and the character is a pain to convince. Only crib he mentioned was about the "spring" load of the clutch pedal.
Turbo lag is very relative term, how many of DDIS owners would even dare to attempt overtake at 90-100 kmph on a 2 lane highway, while slotted in 5th? I wont and neither would you, unless you dont really care about safety. Be it DDIS or 2.4 liter Vtec ;)
For me roll on timings matter in lower gears and that too inside city, where one needn't change gears but just putter around from 30 to 60 kph in one gear. Rest would be academic. In Turbo engines one generally use a gear lower to keep the engine in the meat of powerband to enjoy this in gear acceleration.
That is one of the best reviews i have laid eyes on in a while. The pictures do full justice as well!.....I was looking forward to the Cruze but honestly....the enthusiasm has died down a bit after reading yr review. Need to really put it through its paces (especially in city driving conditions) before deciding.
Thanks once again

Even I was complaining about the Turbo Lag. But, once I got used to it its absolutely not noticeable. And as far as overtaking is concerned, once you change the gear (only if its below 1700rpm) and slam the acc- the car moves like a bullet!

The problem here is that Indians love to drive on top gear in highways. Many drive around 60-70kmph on highways. And they will potter along in 5th gear at 1200-1400rpm.
With such driving style, you will need to downshift before overtaking. This gets annoying. Of course you can change your driving style.
For example, I always used to shift 4-5th around 50-60 in indica, but in safari I do the same over 65-70kmph. Initially it was annoying(vibrations at 60 in 5th gear), but with driving style change I got used to it.
Guys , WHITE LTZ delivery will take another 15-16 days, checked out the Velvet RED today, looks great and is available. Too confused.
P.S.- RED colour looks great now , but dont know how it will after a year or so , on the other hand WHITE will look good as new throughout.
Just too confused. Have to confirm the colour by tomorrow morning, HELP !!please:
After seeing the darker shade i feel they look better on the car. So i say go for it.

Just another observation,

I honestly hope GM have got their act right on the headlamp reflectors on the Cruze,C'os on the Magnum they are a joke. Even after 130/100s its pathetic to say the least.Absolutely blind at night. |
Very true. i m using a 90/100 in my magnum and I would say it is such a shame for a 11 lakh car.
This week I have got a Aveo as loaner car from GM and the headlights in that with the stock bulb is 5 times brighter than my upgraded one in Magnum.

Karan, Red is a very good color for cruze. It gives the 'young' look as compared to the white. If you are going to buy the car for yourself, I would say Red does look very good.
I bought the white, because I was buying the car for my dad...

100% Agreed,
Even in petrol engines you need to downshift to overtake and wait for 5000RPM incase of vtec, I find civic horrible for the highways to overtake in as i need to down shift, if i want a quick overtake and bumper to bumper traffic where you have to brake and then accelerate again. Where as i just press the accelarator in my ddis to overtake.
I drove CRUZE LTZ today. Must say TRULY amazed by the car its a KILLER package the price comparing it to the HONDA CIVIC as i have that at home. Cruze FULLY loaded with some innovate goodies. The fit and finish is pretty good. The car has good suspension setup, taking those hard turns was never scary, Futuristic interiors that just fit you in, The ergonmic's was good, The one touch sun roof is another tempt :D.
Mostly drove it traffic so i never bothered to check the O-100 but the 100 came quick thats for sure, The in gear performance is very good and TURBO LAG? I think the car has enough torque to keep it moving under 2000rpm. I drive a diesel every day and trust me you can live with the lag its better that a GETZ CRDI's lag. Yes the car will not go from 40km/h onward in 5th gear which is not really a thing to do and every car has differnt gear ratio's
The car is said to give 12KMPL which is good for a 2.0 in traffic.
The down side is the weird tapet noise, its very annoying if no music is on. But once the car is moving then its fine. The space in the glovebox is less, And the arm rest is a little small. You need to adapt to the gear box shift its a little flimsy you tent to shift to 4th from 3rd looking for the 2nd gear.
The rear leg room is decent and the car doent not feel as broad as the civic from inside due to the interior design.
The car is AWESOME as a pacakge, The car can change CHEVY's image and fate. Its sure is a tough competion for its rivals in this price range.
Compare and drive the engine like a DIESEL, Its not a high revving engine nor fun to revv to catch speeds you need to quick shift.
The civic has more brand/snob value and the seats are amazing. Not to mention the digital dash. But as a familiy car and over all value, I think chevy can be considerd it now comes with 3 year and 1,00,000KM warranty.
The sales representative of Dynamic Motors, the Chandigarh dealer, told me today that he expected the price of the Cruze to go up before the launch of the automatic variant. So far, this dealer has given delivery of 11 cars and has a backlog of 36. They have no car for a test drive! He was full of the merits of his car and seemed to consider the Laura as the only competition, if at all. No Mention of Civic/Corolla.
Only time will tell about the truthfulness of the dealer's statement. Perhaps Cruze may or may not be any competition to Civic and/or Corolla. For now, it is new, looks good, and could sell. However, have you seen GM's Indian product sales history over the last 10 years.
It might be that dealers are trying to push customers to purchase the car as sales are generally low during November/December.:)
So, in this way they have preponed purchases of quite a few people from January/Feb to 2009.
Guess the initial hype ended and people have started thinking here. Will the Cruze sustain the interest, i'm not sure. It doesnt beat the magnum in performance by much, is inferior in interior space and ride quality. If one think about it, the gadgets are mostly useless, except for the auto wipers, steering mounted controls, auto aircon, cd changer etc. No TCS, ESP, electric seats, HID/dual headlamps etc which really matters.
I wouldn't worry about it. Looks to me the classic dealer case of "scarcity principle" (if you don't do this now "x" will happen).
And if GM indeed does something stupid and price goes up, don't worry discounts will be hack soon :)
