Re: Skoda Kylaq Review

I am on the lookout for a new car and checked out the Kylaq in Chennai when it was put up for display. The car looked absolutely stunning in person. What made me go off was the rear space, interiors and comfort - not something one expects for a 18L car! For someone who is 6'1, the rear legroom and space seems to be compromised. I've not booked one yet, but I have also checked out 3XO and booked one and cancelled it later due to boot space and electronics issue. The Syros seem to excite me and checked it out in showrooms - but I feel it'll command a premium price tag of 20L for a sub 4m!

The Auto expo also attracted me to Sierra - but we all know how much Tata is reliable. Any suggestions guys?!

Hey,

Have you actually tried the car or thinking of switching based on youtube reviews? I planning to check it out next weekend.

Also, I heard Skoda had a sale in March'24. Any idea if this is an annual event?

Re: Skoda Kylaq Review

Much-awaited review! It’s great!

The only issue I see with the Skoda Kylaq is the backseat, where three people can’t sit comfortably. This is something new car buyers will consider. Skoda should have made the backseat flat to accommodate three passengers comfortably.

I have already taken test drive of Kushaq in person 2 times.

Have carefully checked Kylaq too in person (2 times). The space is cramped for my requirement and height (5 11’).

Re: Skoda Kylaq Review

It looks like this is going to be decent purchase for someone looking to buy a car with good build quality and fun driving dynamics with small footprint on the road. Perfect for city.

I however think Skoda did some unnecessary cost-cutting

1. Rear windshield wiper/washer is only available on Prestige Trim
2. They decided to only offer hill control from Signature Plus variant (even thought Signature comes in AT but won't get hill control!) An automatic without a hill control, would be dangerous on steep inclines.
3. Rear defogger missing in Classic variant!

Things that I'm really happy to see Skoda did with Kylaq
1. 6 airbags as standard
2. Steering adjustable for reach and rake.
3. Proper dead pedal on all variants
4. Airbag deactivation for co-passenger! (We don't see this in Indian cars at all)
5. The entire electronic safety suite (ABS, EBD, Stability Control, Traction Control etc) available in all variants (Only TPMS is missed in Classic variant and Hill Control missed in Classic and Signature variants)

From a safety and mechanicals stand-point, this looks to be a no-nonsense well engineered car.

I can already foresee that this is going fill the void that Polo left in the car industry. This would find many young enthusiastic buyers.

The only drawback I see is the cost cutting they did for lower variants. It takes away from the value quotient.

Some of the feature omissions I see in the brochure indicate that Skoda actually spent time and engineering effort to remove features!
For instance, I found that they removed the parcel tray stowing space behind seats and the 3 kg hooks!
Skoda Kylaq Review-skodacostcutting.jpg
These are plastic bits protruding from the interior plastic trim. It doesn't cost skoda anything to leave them in. In fact, it would have cost skoda more money to create a new die and a plastic casting mold that doesn't have those plastic protrusions!

Overall, a compelling purchase for the Signature or the Signature Plus variants.
Classic variant has too much cost-cutting and Prestige variant is just too overpriced.

The variant spread probably needs work and perceived value offered has to be increased.

Kylaq Signature Plus Walkaround. The front DRLs and headlamps change the look of the car.

Just saw. Such a shame of Škoda to hide this behind the curtains. It’s clearly a bad thing to hide this during the marketing campaign. They should have given the same DRLs in Signature plus atleast. With this, the car looks absolutely dull

Completely agree 100%. It feels a bit stupid that a car that's going to cost close to 15L on road misses out on this which is basic. I hate that they've done it. If I am bargaining, I'd have liked to get at least the projector headlamps

Re: Skoda Kylaq Review

As a standalone car it looks like a fantastic package. If this were to be the only model available till say, an Octavia and further a Kodiaq, that would be fine. But I am a bit worried as to how it would be really perceived.
1) Being a sub 4m car, it is not "SUVish" enough in terms of street presence.
2) Being wider than 1.75m, it is not compact like a hatch (Polo/Fabia) to
3) I would also be worried about Kushaq/Taigun 1.0 as they would no longer be VFM, as Kylaq offers 95% of the space, features and the same performance for a bit less.

So in my books, they would have to bring in a larger Kushaq/Taigun to compete with the Creta/Seltos/Vitaras to keep themselves going in the true "Compact SUV" space.

  • .. The Kylaq's handling is more sharper/responsive & go-kart like than the Kushaq due to lesser weight and shorter overhangs.
  • Like other Germans, the Kylaq too will age very well.
  • Finally, a very all-rounded German, that won't break the bank, can be used as a beater / secondary car, good to drive and will get many households into the brand.
  • I feel the Kylaq is going to get the same popularity to Skoda that Polo brought to Volkswagen.

Spent almost 10 days with the car. This is from where the above observations come from:

Thanks for sharing. These are fantastic insights coming from spending quite a lot of time with the car. Few questions -
1. Is the car E20 compliant?
2. Can it use normal fuel, or will it require premium fuel? Hope the dreaded EPC issue which plagued the early Kushaqs doesn't turn up again?
3. Would you advise the Signature AT variant given it's the base AT variant ? Or Signature +?
4. Most reviews are calling this the best driver's car in the sub 4M segment? Would you concur?

Re: Skoda Kylaq Review

I will be brutally honest with everyone and say that Skoda has indeed done their part of market research and really tried to carve out the perfect product for the average man and the family enthusiasts such as me who can't afford to throw down large lumps of cash on a proper sports car such as an Octavia VRS. I really hope that Skoda brings success to their sales and marketing and the car is a huge hit in the Indian markets. I am also looking forward to Skoda giving us some more spicy sports cars in the future such as the Fabia for example.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Review

I'm in the market for a new car. Requirements are comfortable seating for 4, a good engine that would keep me entertained for years, mature ride and handling, good reliability. I need the basic safety tech of abs, traction control, 6 airbags. I am least bothered by features apart from the basic ac(acc is a plus), music system, adjustable stearing and seat height, electronic mirrors. I would have loved rear defogger and washer but for some reason this is treated as a luxury item. I currently drive a 14 year old 1.2 na. Having experienced all sorts of new age cars and their features, i can confidently say that the only thing I want in my next car is a good engine, suspension and braking. I don't drive enough for features like cruise control, sunroof, voice assistant etc to be of any use to me.

With a budget of under 12lakh on road, I am currently considering an i20 n line n6 manual and the kylaq classic upgraded with the official infotainment system. Considering the infotainment upgrade and extended warranties for both, I'm looking at probably a price difference of around 1.8L between the 2. The hyundai has the advantage of alloy wheels, fog lamps, acc, rear defogger, cruise control, steering mounted controls, DRVM(is this available in the accessory infotainment system in the kylaq? Might be useful in the raining season due to lack of rear wiper). Hyundai also has 2 dealers whereas skoda is restricted to 1. I have not experienced the kylaq, but I'm guessing it'll be better built, offer taller seating for my parents, better gc, adjustable headrest and will be a little less spacious then the i20.

People who have experienced both the cars, what do you suggest? Any other cars worth looking at? I keeping a minimum torque requirement of 150nm as my baseline engine filter.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Review

Skoda is trying to answer the question papers of last decade. The game has moved ahead. Just check Syros and pit it against this from a layman's perspective, not an enthusiast hat.

Will be mighty surprised if this car gets a stable demand around 7k per month post the initial surge.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Review

While I absolutely love the simple yet appealing design of the Skoda Kylaq, I can't but still be concerned of the market response and maintenance costs. I still yearn to own a car, which is petite and compact. Having dropped the plans to buy Tata punch three years back, I am considering Fronx/ Taisor, Baleno,i20 N-line, Amaze in my preferrences. Kylaq seems to be good, if not for the touch panel based AC. Also if the rear seat experiwnce is decent I can add it to my options. Main thing is to ensure my folks do not.experience fatigue or discomfort, especially after they were not too happy with the rear seat of Dzire we used for touring.

Most of all, I must refresh my driving skiils and improve confidence.

Mods, in case the post requires to be on a separete thread, feel free to do so.
