One thing that got me thinking is, if they can eke out a sub-4mtr car from the same platform, can't they also make Kushaq lil bigger to better compete with the likes of Creta and Seltos on size? It seems very unlikely that Kushaq will get any upgrade in terms of size in its facelift. Skoda will have a hard time differentiating 1.0L Kushaq from Kylaq, unless they are intentional about all this to drive more sales for Kushaq 1.5L.
New Kushaq and Taigun will be launched on a new platform MQB-A1 in 2027 which will make the overall car bigger than current versions

Hatchback market is still very much active, and with recent shift of Indians buying premium cars over basic entry level ones as their entry into four wheelers segment, a premium hatchback will have reasonable demand.

Yes, it will be based on Fabia. Skoda Kylaq and VW's A0 SUV will have lots in common. Kylaq for India and VW's SUV is for Brazilian/LATAM market only (as of now)

Quote:
Starting in October, Skoda will start manufacturing the equivalent model in India, called Kylaq. This model will share several parts and components with the Gol SUV and both will be based on the European Skoda Fabia, using the MQB-A0 platform. Skoda plans to sell between 50,000 and 70,000 Kylaqs per year, and the VW (Gol SUV) is expected to have a similar volume in Brazil.

Both SUVs will be equipped with a 1.0 TSI turbocharged three-cylinder engine, with the possibility that the Gol SUV will also offer the 1.0 MPI naturally aspirated engine, depending on the performance of the aspirated Citroën Basalt 1.0. Visually, the Kylaq will be more conservative, while the Gol SUV promises to be quite distinctive and attractive in the market.
Kylaq:

The entire project, it is worth remembering, is being carried out jointly with Volkswagen and, at the end of the work, each brand will have its version of the model. The cooperation is aimed at reducing development costs and, in this sense, will take advantage of the entire structure of the MQB-A00 platform. While the Kylaq will be the Czech part of the deal, the long-awaited VW A0-SUV (already teased in teasers) will be the German equivalent.

The Skoda model will be focused on India, while Volkswagen's brother will have Brazil as its main market. With its own design and inspired by recent launches, such as the Tiguan, the A0-SUV will be launched in the Brazilian market in 2025 and produced at the Taubaté (SP) plant. When it hits stores, the unprecedented SUV will be positioned above the Polo Track and below the Nivus, in order to rival Fiat Pulse and Renault Kardian.

From the pics, the VW's A0 SUV looks bigger, specially wider than the Kylaq. Hope it is launched here too at a later date. They can market it as the Polo SUV which Ashish Gupta, brand director has said multiple times on different channels.

Unlike India, in Brazil there are no size limits imposed on vehicles that can receive any type of tax benefit. The VW equivalent will actually be larger than the Kylaq, especially in length. The main competitors of the A0 SUV in Brazil will be the Fiat Pulse, Renault Kardia and the future model that Chevrolet is developing based on the Onix.

Here you go, VW decides to take a share in the 4m compact SUV, though the launch will be later than its sibling, Skoda's Kylaq.

Volkswagen India will launch a compact SUV in 2026.

Quote:
VW compact SUV will share platform, powertrain with Skoda Kylaq
Compact SUV will cost ‘around 25 million euros’ to develop
VW may have a special 1.5 ‘GT’ version for enthusiasts

Rightly said. Just that it won't have the build and the quality that the Polo had. That's something we just won't get anymore.

In terms of misses the Kylaq won't be getting fog lamps is it? Atleast this pre production variant doesn't seem to have one.

Disclaimer: This is my personal opinion, I might be wrong and many may disagree with me.

I was about to write something about, how it's good for Skoda that VW isn't there in this segment. What I, personally, feel and noticed that Skoda often takes a backseat whenever we talk about VAG products, in general. Obvious, because VAG is the parent, a bigger brand and Skoda a poor, adopted child.

This wasn't the case with Skoda in India though. We always knew Skoda for her luxurious, solidly built cars. Then came VW and told us, "No, no, we are even more premium." So, there is a premium badge and then an even more premium badge.

Now fast forward to 2024. Both are selling the same cars, same features, same engines, same platform. Apart from the badge, VW adds nothing to the car. It's not that VW makes Alcazar and Skoda makes a Carens. Its not even that VW offers premium leather interiors and Skoda fabric seats. Skoda gets only 1.0 TSI and VW gets 1.5.

So, when Skoda talked about entering the sub 4 metre segment, I thought, okay, now it makes sense, Skoda gets a lower entry point. You gotta spend more to get a VW. But, now VW is here too.

My question is, why do you still have two brands, two showrooms for cars, that are almost the same. The Hyundai-Kia formula didn't work for you.

I believe it's time to kill Skoda brand (despite me owning a Kushaq) in India, concentrate on VW and save some money in the process. Skoda buyers will happily move to VW, you won't miss much.

And if you do plan to retain both, atleast make sure there is some difference between the two brands and their products.

Wait a minute. The Polo crossover has already been spotted?! Oh man, I hope they do not kill out each other's customers, like the Kodiaq did to Tiguan.

Agree with you on having common sales and service touchpoints in order to cater larger customer base but how can Hyundai-Kia formula apply to VAG?

Both Skoda and VW have cars manufactured from their Chakan plant, they don't have separate factories like Hyundai and Kia. Unlike the PQ25 cars, their 2.0 products are similar mechanically but visually are entirely different and not badge engineered like the mighty Toyota and Suzuki.

In order to meet their targets, they need to have more numbers which Skoda alone would not be able to get. It is unfortunate that even after 20 plus years the group has not been able to make a mark in our country and still remains a niche brand.

They need a better product portfolio, with 4 major products at a comparatively higher price, less features and average after sales it will be difficult to pull customers.

The Polo crossover was spotted in Brazil. I don't think cannibalisation of sales would be a big factor since its not something that has occurred with earlier VAG 2.0 models.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Pre-Production Camouflaged Car First Drive & Preview

Well I think people would have happily bought their sedans only if they had invested in localising their Good products like Octy, Superb & Kodiaq and that would have helped VW too in localising Tiguan, Jetta and Passat instead of heavily investing in VAG 2.0 because all they had to do was to localise a 2 liter turbo petrol and a TDI and put that in their whole lineup. Moreover they were able to sell those cars when purchasing power of Indian customers was way too less and nowadays when I see Creta selling @25 lakhs.

What do I say

Damn!! a Octavia 2.0 TSI DSG at 30 lakhs in 2023 always made sense

I always regret not buying the Octavia when I had the chance. I never thought they would ever pull it out of the market.
