Re: Skoda Kylaq Pre-Production Camouflaged Car First Drive & Preview

Regarding Skoda Kylaq TC transmission variant, any idea about its ex-showroom cost. It would be interesting to see the Kylaq cost comparison with Nixon Fearless DCA variant, which is I guess at 14 lacs. I guess price war is just begin in B-Segment SUV which this new entrant (Kylaq) in Indian market.

I have often read that turbo-petrols have very poor city mileage. Is it also the case for VW/ Skoda 1.0L engine? Fuel economy makes a difference for us given a running of ~15-20k kms a year.
- The NVH on these engines are good, I have extensively driven a 1.0 Taigun AT, and apart from the cold start and the first couple of minutes, you'd be hard-pressed to tell if it is a 3 cylinder or a 4 cylinder engine. Having said that, do not go into the drive expecting it to be as smooth as Suzuki, Honda or even Hyundai for that matter. It is subjectively worse, but not too far off. I don't think the problem would be large enough to influence your purchase decision.

- The city fuel economy isn't this engine forte, the aforementioned Taigun does high single digits in B2B Bangalore traffic with a gentle throttle inputs, low double digits if you're extra cautious and hypermiling, and 5-6 if you're even slightly aggressive in the city. On highway though, a steady 80-100 would yield anything between 16-18 km/l, which I find to be perfectly acceptable. The engine itself never feels out of place for making steady and deliberate progress.

What bugs me about the 1.0 AT powertrain, is how rapidly the car tries to gain speed from standstill. Which requires a firm foot on the brake at all times, and it does get tiring after 30 minutes in B2B traffic. On an open road, it's obviously a non-issue. I hope they've rectified the calibration on the newer units (mid-year refreshes, upcoming facelifts and Kylaq-twins). Having driven a Honda CVT and even Suzuki AMTs, I sort of have a feeling on how sophisticated the B2B trudging should/could ideally be.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Pre-Production Camouflaged Car First Drive & Preview

The starting pricing is quite aggressive. I am curious to see how the TC variant would be priced. If it is anywhere close to 10L, the model should see healthy volumes.

I so want the VW version of Kylaq to come soon, considering they style their cars better.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Pre-Production Camouflaged Car First Drive & Preview

My brother is taking the delivery of Sonet HTX DCT tomorrow and boy! the timing of Kylaq reveal couldn't be any better- or worse! But we knew this coming. We needed the car ASAP and couldnt wait till next year to start the deliveries for Kylaq, so decided on the Kia.

Kylaq would have been the perfect car, as we really liked the Kushaq, but the 1L TC wasn't really VFM at around 19L OTR Cochin for the variant we wanted and the 1.5s were out of budget. I Think Kia Sonet HTX DCT is the most VFM variant at ~15L OTR, in the Sonet line-up, which I dont know, has a 100 permutations and combinations? Though a 360 camera would have been a good to have feature in the HTX, but never a deal breaker for us though.

I did push him to go for the i20 N-line and there too, I was met with defeat. But atleast with the Skoda, everyone in the family liked it. So here we are with a big 'what if' lingering!, perhaps in my mind than my brother's

Re: Skoda Kylaq Pre-Production Camouflaged Car First Drive & Preview

I do not think this will do very well in the Indian market. 2.0 cars quality is substandard, koreans are much better. The segment does not really care about ride & handling people are looking for VFM. Look at cost cutting like 2 rear parking sensors, when competition is giving front parking sensors & 360 camera.

VW group has still not realised the Indian market. The sales will be between 2.5 to 3.5k a month with many coming from Kushaq 1.0 customers. The new venue will be launching sometime next year and as we know Koreans will take the car into a different league feature wise.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Pre-Production Camouflaged Car First Drive & Preview

Few takeaways:
  1. Great pricing to start with. The competition has to be worried.
  2. Well proportioned, classy European styling. Much easier on the eyes than the 3XO and the Nexon.
  3. Spacious (segment wise) with a very usable boot.
  4. Most important point - spiritual successor to the Polo and the Ecosport considering fun-to-drive and ride and handling package.
  5. Equally important - 5 star safety since it is based on the Kushaq/Taigun platform.
  6. This will affect sales of hatchbacks as well because the size is just right! Why would you want an Altroz racer or i20 n-line when you can have a 1.0 TSI for less?
  7. Skoda must launch a Rider 1.0AT version at 9.99L to further increase its appeal.

What an amazing way to set the cat among pigeons @7.89 L. These are good times for us customers.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Pre-Production Camouflaged Car First Drive & Preview

It's a very competent package for what is offers and is based on a very solid and proven product. The only chink in the armor is the size - it will forever be perceived as a chopped-up Kushaq. From the pictures at least, Skoda has tried well to balance the proportions and have succeeded at that.

Skoda has given it the features that perhaps 90% of the buyers use on a daily basis. ADAS, panoramic sunroof, auto-hold etc., would have been a key differentiating features, but have driven the prices higher. And for this car to have any chance of making a dent, pricing had to be aggressive.

Another point that I liked is the time it took for Skoda to bring this car to the market. In 12 months time, they have gone from talking about this car to actually making it available to book. And Skoda-VW have always struggled with this. Too much delays, approvals have derailed their products. Hoping Kylaq is a success and enabled the group to learn for the future.

I was quite excited about this color option, it looked more like a bright candy green color in the pictures from launch event. After Chevrolet Beat, I haven't seen any cars in this price range with green color option. I was wondering why it is mentioned as 'Olive Gold'
In this video shot in daylight, it looks more yellowish. It might be the green lighting in studio that made it look green in the photos.

Re: Skoda Kylaq Pre-Production Camouflaged Car First Drive & Preview

I think Skoda would try to mimic 3XO pricing with mx1 matching classic and ax7 matching prestige. Where Skoda will trump slightly is matching variants AT pricing. Mahindra has priced ATs at 1.5L more translating to difference of 1.8L onroad in most cases. Skoda usually prices AT more like 1.2-1.3 ex showroom.

On the other hand on paper, Venue turbo may look expensive but its usually available with handsome discounts. Their base variant turbo executive is almost mid spec of the Skoda and Venue is definitely better built than i20 with a super soft short travel clutch matching a buttery gearbox.

At the other end, Citroen c3 might get some attention for its 9.99 top AT ex showroom for single tone. It’s like the mid spec of other competing brands. Only if it’s interiors were slightly more better and better incidence inspiring network and service packages.

A price of 7.89 for a turbocharged car is absolutely stunning. It could be one of the most affordable turbocharged cars available. I hope Skoda doesn't surprise us by offering the naturally aspirated 1.0 MPI engine in the base variant.

Is it just me or did some of you consider this is likely to happen?

If Kylaq is a hit (should be, considering the product, pricing, and furore), the Kushaq 1.0 will start dwindling out since enthusiasts prefer lesser weight for the engine on offer, and before they dwindle out, we should have good - maybe great - offers by October 2025.

On the AC cooling effectiveness, Rohit mentioned couple of times that he feels the AC is doing a great job and seems perfectly fine. Hopefully Skoda would have addressed the issue with the 1L TSI engine for AC. For model with sunroof, they have added a nice touch by giving sunglasses holder inside the glove box (simply clever touch ).

All in all, this seems like a winner with almost all significant features available at a competitive price. This should sell atleast 4-4.5k per month.

Kylaq could draw buyers away from Kushaq, says Skoda India head.

Kylaq is crucial for economies of scale; Kushaq facelift due in 2025 will create further differentiation.

Drove a Santro DX, and then a Swift and Polo ( both 1st release) without cameras but now with my i20 N line. I find my rear camera so useful. Can only wonder 360 being a useful addition.

Why do we defend manufacturers omitting good to have safety feature when the segment has players who do have it.

Where did you deduce that from?

The Slavia/Kushaq still feel better than the Koreans, so much better than a known is selling his Seltos DCT for the 1.0 Slavia. The VW twins feel much better made, drive nicer, and have a much better safety rating. Nothing much is different inside, except the Kia will be a total rattle can in two years.
