Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

I went to the showroom where I had made the booking and did a test drive. It's a well-built Mahindra. Things we touch and feel are superior over the Thar. However, not everyone was interested in this car. There were people in the showroom looking at the Scorpio and XUV and not comparing or looking at the Roxx. From the front, the differentiators between the Thar and Roxx are few, and seeing the number of modified Thars, one can easily overlook the front of the Roxx as another Thar.

I tried the Petrol Roxx, and as others have noted, the engine is super silent. More like premium cars, the sitting position is nice & commanding, and you can merge in traffic like a boss. For whatever reason, I found a slower-speed ride comfortable, but the high speed— 90+— can be very unpredictable. I haven't driven any other Mahindra product, so I cannot comment if this is on all Mahindra's but I don't think driving this beyond 100 or so will be recommended. The chassis (or whatever) is tuned very badly.

I don't see cannibalization with other models (XUV/ Scorpion) and won't be surprised if deliveries are faster than what is being told. In the future, I don't think this 5-door will be able to make numbers closer to the 3-door. People who want to spend 20 Lac plus are not just looking at a Wrangler lookalike but want a sorted product for their family, which the Roxx is missing. A major reason of 3-door success is the lower price point that brings so many numbers.

I have not yet cancelled the booking, but I am not sure if I will be going ahead.

Very helpful, I'm planning to have a normal test drive as well. Did they have a petrol version for the test drive?

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Adding some details which I didn't find anywhere mentioned in this thread.

1. For anyone planning to get the MX1, MX3, AX3L and MX5 in Stealth Black colour, be aware that the roof will be in gloss black, matching the rest of the body instead of matte black. Rear plastic cover is going to be in matte in any case.

Stealth Black colour with matte black roof is only available on the AX5L and AX7L.

2. Sun visor: only the AX7L gets mirror and lights on both side also the material is premium.
AX5L and lower variants comes with the standard sun visor without any lights, mirror on the passenger side only.

Yes they did, Diesel, 4x4 and petrol AT / MT were available.

I found the staff helpful and nice, warm at Harbir which isn't the case at Raj.

For outsiders both Harbir and Raj are Mahindra dealers in Tricity area.

This looks like a recent change made by Mahindra. I downloaded Thar Roxx brochure from August, and this was not specified explicitly anywhere.

I have seen Black MX5 in showroom last month and it had matte black roof.

You uncovered the inner Scorpio of ROXX

It's normal for it to feel 'nervous' but once you are used to their vehicles others will feel slow and lazy to respond to you.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Wanted to check Battleship grey & Tango Red color which was available at Anant cars, Bannerghatta road.

The Tango red is different than Thar 3D Red. The Roxx Red has more shine and Red exterior with Mocha brown interior might suit well.

The Side profile. Red with black top is looking good.

The rear profile.

Mahindra Thar Roxx Review-redr.jpeg

I think Mahindra is providing HT tyre in RWD and AT in 4*4. Red Roxx was RWD with HT tyre. Tyre profile 255/65R18

Mahindra Thar Roxx Review-httyre.jpeg

Seems like intentional gap to push for accessories to cover these. MudGuard is must to avoid splash on side panel which covers these gap properly.

Both together

I think Red with Mocha brown interior will look good on Roxx. If you want something unique, Battleship Grey is the one to go for.

Short test drive feedback

Pros
  • Refinement , NVH level - The outside noise is masked well, Diesel engine is smooth.
  • AT gearbox's tuning. Shifts are smooth and predictable.
  • No transmission tunnel with almost flat floor at rear.
  • Steering is precise and light, by far the best from Mahindra. [Hate the Xuv300 Steering feedback]
  • Rear boot is shaped well and can hold a lot if you pack properly.
  • Mocha Brown interior option in 4*4, I personally love this color.
  • Handling is good for a BoF standard. Ride is manageable >30KM speed.

Cons
  • Seats - I simply don't understand why Mahindra can provide the similar Xuv700 shaped seats. They lack side bolstering, under thigh support and overall comfort. The Xuv300 front seats are far better.
  • Ride never settles upto 30KM and gets better once you speed up.
  • The car is heavy and 172BHP/370NM do not translate the performance I was hoping for. Mahindra could've given the Xuv700's 182BHP/450NM state of tune.
  • 9-speaker Harman Kardon system is just average.
  • If you are not after BoF 4*4, there are many compromises like no bottle holder, seating comfort, ride quality, less economy. Take a longer & multiple TD.

In summary, I came back with confused state. Maybe I had a huge expectation and somehow Roxx couldn't meet all of them. But my requirements are clear and I need BoF 4*4 which can take me to places like Bumla, gurudongmar lake, Mana pass, Spiti in winter, Jaiselmer dune bashing etc. Need a longer TD to evaluate whether 'The SUV' is the one to go for.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Very interesting coverage of the Thar Roxx at Autocar. A lot of interesting aspects covered as to why the Thar Roxx will be a huge success for Mahindra.

For those of you who are wondering the Diesel/Petrol mix of sales, the show covers it. Attaching a screenshot to show how much dominance diesel has over petrol in the world of Mahindra and its customers..

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

The cheapest P AT of ROXX is almost 1L cheaper than that of Seltos, 1.5L cheaper than that of ScorpioN, and the gap widens even when compared to Creta, XUV700, Hector etc.

For lot of people who want to go for a lower model of 4.2m segment SUV instead of a top model of a sub 4m SUV, ROXX offers a lot of car for the money.

...which is a good or bad thing?

I know looks are subjective but initial reviews wished the Thar had unibody color, instead of matte black roof. Now that wish is filled with lower variants - which one does look better? The body color roof or the matt one?

It is clearly mentioned in the latest brochure under the colour options.
I am also sharing a screenshot from a youtube video that shows the glossy roof.

Just wanted to share the information, but my personal preference would be the matte black roof.

_______________

Adding details with images which is not mentioned anywhere.
1. As I mentioned yesterday, the AX7L comes with a premium and different type of sun visor compared to those in the lower variants.
I forget to check if the sun visor in the lower variants extends like the one in the AX7L.

AX7L

MX1 to AX5L

2. Tools arrangement in the boot: The AX7L features a moulded styrofoam tool storage, which is absent in the lower variants where the tools are kept loose in the boot - another example of cost-cutting.

Another thing I noted about the panel gaps near the headlights. See the below photos, gap is very prominent.
