Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

I got opportunity to feel rear seat in one of the test drives. The showroom had people waiting in queue for test drive. The person taking test drive before me in the queue was okay with me travelling on the rear seat during his test drive.

I could feel some bumps and side movements sitting in the rear seat. The ride did not feel as planted as portrayed by all YouTube reviews.
He was a spirited driver and in one case stopped suddenly which resulted in some nosedive. The nosedive gave me unsettling feeling which I cannot describe but my body took some time to recover from that feeling. I am not that spirited driver anymore after bidding goodbye to my Polo GT 1.6, so I will tag my family along to get their feedback next time when I get to test drive Thar Roxx.

It looks like showrooms do not have Scorpio-N diesel AT readily available for test drive anymore. I am waiting to hear back when Scorpio-N automatic will be available for test drive, so that I can take back to back test drive of Thar Roxx AT and Scorpio-N AT, tag my family along with me to confirm whether I retain my Thar Roxx booking or change it to Scorpio-N.

Based on conversation with him, the most budget friendly option would be the MX3 Petrol AT RWD Variant (for his specific use case), which is about INR 18.8 L on road in Bangalore. A definite addition would be the OE Alloy Wheels that cost INR 62,000. I don't really see the need to add much else to the car apart from the regular floor mats, car cover and scuff plates. Overall, the cost would be below 20L.
My analysis of the various Thar Roxx variants and my specific use case where it won't be my primary car has landed me too on booking the MX3 P AT. In Gurugram, the on-road price will be 17 lakhs or even slightly less if I manage to buy the insurance myself. Other considerations include the following:
1. MX3 is feature rich and not a stripped down variant.
2. Most niggles in recent Mahindra SUV's are reportedly in the electronics area. By completely avoiding ADAS and other electronic features, I hope to have a relatively trouble-free ownership.
3. Rather than the digital instrument cluster, I love the analog dials.
4. Petrol AT offers the engine in its highest state of tune with 380 Nm torque.
5. MX3 Petrol AT has rear disc brakes for better stopping power.
6. White leatherette soiling issues is completely avoided with black fabric upholstery.
7. It comes with 18 inch tyres which is supposed to offer better ride quality than the 19 inchers in the top variant. Alloys can be added to improve aesthetics.
I wish I get the good news from Mahindra on 25th Oct that they have the MX3 P AT to offer me, dealers seem to think MX3's will be delayed quite a lot.

Exactly the reasons due to which i booked MX3 P AT ! Adding couple of more.

1. The next P AT version i.e. MX5 P AT is 3 lakhs costlier but the additional features in it are not more than 1.5 - 1.75 lakhs worth (Considering avg OE prices of additional features)
2. No sunroof - better heat insulation - lesser AC usage - better FE
3. Worth a petrol buy for someone who is living in NCR and wishes to use car for a longer term
4. In 17 Lakhs On road price, the cheapest and the best C segment SUV in India for car enthusiasts who love powerful engines (power & torque) and need all the essential features within a car.

Completely agree. I feel this is the highest value variant of the Thar Roxx rupee for rupee. For comparison, the MX3 Diesel AT is priced at 17.5 lakhs, an 18% premium, but does not get the higher power tune available in the diesels (gets only 150 HP/330 NM which quite a bit less than the 173 HP/370 NM available in the higher diesel tunes). On the other hand, as you say, the Petrol MX3 AT get the full 175 HP and 300 NM treatment.

I think among Automatic cars, the Thar Roxx is possibly the car with the highest horsepower per lakh of rupees you can buy today with 175 HP for 15 lakhs, or 11.67 HP per lakh. The XUV700 AX3 petrol AT does deliver 198 HP but costs 18 lakhs (11 HP per lakh). It also does not have many important features such as 6 airbags, cruise control, wireless charging, rear view camera, drive modes, engine start/stop button, BLD, LED headlights, ESP, Hill hold and Hill descent controls that the Thar Roxx MX3 P AT delivers for no extra cost.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Have started seeing Thar Roxx on roads, all were delivered vehicles. Apparently all were black colored one’s. The car looks macho from rear but the side is a confused lot. Looks kinda disproportionate from certain angles, the triangular quarter glass looks fine but the headliner has totally messed up the whole side look. I was kinda excited for this vehicle, but after seeing the road presence, I was like meh..no offence to any future users of the car.

I have a feeling that most MX3 P AT bookings are from NCR only

a) Not going to be my primary car, check.
b) Got all the creature comforts plus some more, check.
c) Phenomenal value, AT and top shelf power+torque figures, check.
d) YOLO vibes and go anywhere confidence, check!

Planning to take BH registration to keep initial costs low and ofcourse to lower the 'random checking' probability while in hometown. Any thoughts on this from those who have been using the BH series?

Is the headliner that evident, given the car was in Black?

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

My decision process (where my preferences are impossible retrofit:

- The only way to get a Mocha Brown interior is to get a 4x4.
- I need a Diesel/Automatic.
- I also need the blind spot detection and emergency breaking (not all the ADAS/autonomous features).

So, I end up with AX7, the top end.

Any suggestions please.

With this option, I do not think this a viable option at all at around 28.5 lakhs on road.

Yes obviosuly its evident. You can’t unsee it, dont go by youtube videos where the car is parked under all shiny lights. Real life on road presence is a different matter altogether. Have seen both mx5 and ax7 variants with 18” and 19” wheels driving on road but both looked wonky from sides, also if anyone is thinking of adding rain visors, they are best avoided as it spoils the look even more. Just my opinion.

The 10 year diesel ban could definitely be playing on the minds of prospective Thar Roxx buyers in NCR and it should as well. However, with my specific use case, its not a consideration at all to sway me towards the MX3 P AT. Besides the facts I have already stated in my earlier post, the petrol is far more refined and being offered at the highest state of tune which dissuades me from considering a diesel where I have to pay more upfront. This will not be my primary car, having had a sedan all through, this will be my first foray into the world of SUVs.

How much lower you anticipate the cost to be with the BH registration?

You have to show you are eligible for BH plate even when you go to renew/topup the Road Tax. I don’t think BH makes a good sense. I had fondness for it but then given all the ifs and buts surrounding it; made little sense.

On separate note, Received call from Booking Support and they acknowledge they received the amount 3 times and would be refunding the amount against which booking ID confirmation was not generated. The person was polite he took my confirmation, explained in detailed manner and then sent the same thing over email also. This seemed more organised than SN time.

Additionally I think if Thar 3D indicator / Fender Lights are direct fit to Thar 5D then they would look much cooler

Also Team-BHP Media Review Thar has Serial No. 466

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

It appears that Toyota has taken note of the Mahindra Thar's success and is exploring the potential for an all-new SUV to be positioned between the Hyryder and Fortuner, according to Autocar India.

Key insights:

1. This new SUV will be built on an entirely new, flexible platform—not the Fortuner’s, nor the TNGA platform that supports the Innova Hycross.

2. Things get interesting: Hormazd Sorabjee suggests that this SUV will feature a monocoque construction and offer both petrol and strong hybrid powertrains at launch.

3. A diesel variant is unlikely.

4. Production is slated to begin in 2027.

A monocoque SUV to compete with Mahindra’s ladder-on-frame vehicles is an unexpected move, raising intriguing questions about its market positioning.
However, I’m a bit confused, as Autocar had reported in July 2024 about an upcoming "FJ Cruiser." It’s unclear what the final name will be for this model. They mentioned:

1. The new Toyota off-roader will be around 4.5 meters long.

2. It will share its platform and powertrain with the Fortuner.

3. It will get petrol and diesel engine options based on a version of the IMV platform.

I initially thought the "Toyota Mini Land Cruiser"/"FJ Cruiser" which was set to make its global debut in Thailand in November 2024, with the platform shared with the TNGA-F global truck platform, similar to the Land Cruiser 250 that has already launched in markets like the U.S. and Australia.

If this is a daily driver - pick up the top 'L' version and do not modify it. That way you pay upfront for everything you are going to do in future. Just fill diesel and enjoy!

Considering how much more expensive ScorpioN is without ADAS or the sunroof or the glamour, good deal man. Go for it.
