Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Ford ecosport also had a sparewheel at the back with bumper to bumper length just under 4 meters. It was sold as a sub 4m car and also got taxation benefits.

I believe there is also another condition on displacement (<1.2L for Gasoline and <1.5L for Diesel) for eligibility on these tax benefits

That is something I should be printing out and framing on the wall. I've tried for the better part of 5 years to get my now 17 year old car run as my daily driver and it keeps letting me down, it spends more time waiting for parts and in the garage than on the road whereas my 1 year old SUV which tops the charts in sales and has excellent service support has never ever let me down

The efficiency is a big concern for me!. Even if I buy knowing the FE, but have more efficient cars in my garage, every morning my brain will compute the loss in choosing Roxx for that day's drive or the gain in not driving it.
Roxx petrol is never going to give double digit FE in city.

For comparison, my friend's 3D Thar P AT gives ~7.5

XUV700 and ScorpioN, which are more aerodynamic than the Roxx, are also in the 6.5-7.5 range in the city. In rush hour B2B traffic drives I have seen XUV700 P AT mileage drop to as low as 5.

For NCR folks, Roxx is a "tashan" car, not a "family" car by any stretch of imagination: It's impractical as a diesel with NGT bans every winter, and even more impractical as a petrol, with the abysmal mileage.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Im going to weigh in here as a long absent member and speak for a bit as an Ex Owner of the 3 door Thar Petrol AT HT.

Part A;
Yes it was a good vehicle and I did spend a lot of money upgrading its suspension and adding underbody protection and a tumble-foldable rear seat and all that.
Despite all this, it still had a jiggly and perpetually busy ride. Its fuel efficiency was pretty bad as can be expected from a large heavy box on wheels. It gave me between 7.5 and 12kmpl in general but for my 800kms a month average running, I used to spend 10,000/- Rupees on Petrol. In the 3 years I owned it I did 30,000kms and frankly became tired (user fatigue) and said bye to it. The Spinny fellows gave me a good price and off it went. Poor thing was sat in the lot for a while and then someone bought it but returned it within a week. Perhaps it wasnt quite suitable. It was sat for 5 months in the lot and it even experienced a price drop. Then it went to a second chap and stayed there.
I wish him well with it. I did maintain it scrupulously and with love when I had it.

Part B:
At the same time that I sold the Thar I came across a low run Jimny Alpha MT -it had actually done just 736kms to be exact, and was available at the same Spinny. So I bought it. I definitely prefer the smaller footprint and having always owned and loved Gypsy's, the Jimny is for me, the perfect replacement, seeing as it is the modern Avatar of the Gypsy but with all the stuff one wants as one grows older - AC, full metal body, power steering, apple car play and all that. It is perfect for me. I prefer the Jimny’s lithe Samurai grace any day to the more Sumo Wrestler-like 3door Thar, especially because of its lesser power, smaller size and ‘road absence’. I enjoy its manual gearbox and love its narrowness, lightness and compactness. For me it is my 4 wheeled motorbike with which I can row through the gears, take it up on the revs in each gear, thread through traffic like an auto rickshaw and enjoy the pliant ride over our frightful road surfaces too, all in one neat well engineered package.

Part C:
I ve been closely following the Roxx since a long time and more closely from the launch onwards, but unlike in the case of the 3 door Thar, I have not considered booking or buying one as yet. I am not in the market and prepared to wait and watch. I have indeed owned many Mahindras in the past. Saying all this, from what I am seeing, the Roxx is in a completely different league of its own! Every single review I read is positive. Every single Youtube review I watch is positive. My good friend GSFerrari, also a fellow Jimny owner, speaks highly of it. I do think Mahindra have hit the ball completely out of the park (again) this time. Mahindra is rather like Dhoni in his heyday of IPL - when he would whack 4 out of 6 balls in an over, outside the stadium.

This Roxx is the perfect family vehicle with those brilliant timeless iconic looks. Yes it is inspired by the Jeep Wrangler and all that for sure. But I think it offers a much more ‘civilised’ package than the Jeep ever can or will. The iron hand, in the velvet glove and all that, if I may. Best of all, the pricing is 30% of that of the Wrangler and once some obliging auto journalist goes and does a real proper feature for feature comparo between the Roxx top spec and the Unlimited, we may very well pleasantly find that the Roxx indeed delivers 85% of what the Jeep does.

I want to drive the Roxx for sure and have left word with the local Mahindra chaps. Once it comes in, I will drive it and post my impressions of it. But I believe it is a foregone conclusion that this will be amongst the biggest hits Mahindra has ever seen so far. They will end up surprising themselves!

Part D:
I have penned a small, slightly satirical piece below - it is not meant to give offence to anyone. Just view it in a humorous vein.

I have always surmised this Thar 5 door Roxx will be a Tamed version.

Thar Roxx will inspire the Walter Mittys and Mr Milquetoasts amongst us, to become, in their mind’s-eyes, the tough, hat-wearing, boot and jeans clad wannabe cowboys, unleashing their ‘inner Indiana Jones’ amongst the urban public, but whose free-spirits are reined-in with children and family responsibilities along with the inevitable trappings of the ‘busy working executive’, condemned to life chained to a desk in a cubicle, inside a high rise, in the spotlight of clinical white strip lighting - wearing their dubious badges of honour in the form of their high-powered eyeglasses, incipient baldness and rapidly rising paunches, along with a humongous mortgage and a bunch of other variegated debt, including, but not limited to, the tier of credit card with which they can flash themselves into any airport lounge once a month.

Their escape route is the Roxx and its ilk with its mouth watering promise of unbridled freedom occasioned by its ‘go anywhere’ capabilities. It is set as their desktop wallpaper, at which they look yearningly and longingly and in a sense, lustingly, as one may look at a glossy poster of some glamourous model or movie star with whom one is infatuated, while yet having to slave away over their excel sheets and presentations in the above mentioned harsh strip lit cubicles.

And if indeed they have broken free from their self Imposed shackles and bought a Roxx, it will be duly ceramic coated or ppf treated, and parked in the basement of the office, silently awaiting that turn of the ignition, and the final escape onto the open road…

As Aldous Huxley said about P G Wodehouse - Wodehouse’s Idyllic World can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from a captivity that may be more irksome than our own.

I would say that the Roxx will be the instrument or tool that will free many of us from the Tyranny of the Mundane and from the soul-destroying slavery of the modern treadmill.

And Kudos to that, I declare!

Parts are very much available, just few months back I got all the rubber hoses and belts replaced. Parts were ordered via the local Maruti stockist and it arrived in about 15 days. Mind you these are small small rubber hoses included that usually are not kept spare anywhere. So availability is not the issue, yes downtime and some planning for maintenance maybe required.

Good read!

Your views once you test drive Roxx will be interesting since you have now owned and spent considerable time with 3 door and Jimny.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Welcome back Shankar Balan, albeit in a small form factor (the vehicle ofcourse). We missed reading your long form posts and while you were away Mahindra made a vehicle for you, everything you wanted it to have - not knowing that you are now Jimnied .

Your review of ROXX will be much awaited by a lot of us here.

One interesting thing I heard was an older lady seemingly uninterested in cars (My own mother in-law) let alone Thar pointing at the white 2 door and saying it looks very good. I think we may finally have a Jeep that would sell a lot in the SUV of colors - White.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Performance: Petrol AT vs Diesel AT

I believe folks need to look at what you get for an average 7 Kmpl (effectively INR 14/ km) for a Petrol AT vs 10 kmpl (effectively INR 9/ km) on the Diesel mill - Delhi NCR fuel prices. As a non-sensical comparison, Uber/ Ola now charge INR 20/ Km during rush hour traffic.

For 10,000 kms annual running, that’s 60k additional to run the Petrol AT vs the Diesel. You get in the Petrol AT:

- A stonker of an engine. Brings smiles like no other.
- Repeat. Repeat.

So many of us were gung-ho about the Octavia vRS and complained when prices reached north of 40L.

Well, this is the closest you can get in the market to bring those smiles and at half the price. And did someone say VRS was faster? Well, Thar is higher - you’ll feel like a king! And in NCR - you get 5 years additional life.

PS: Drive the Petrol AT and Diesel AT back-to-back, the Diesel will feel Sluggish by a HUGE margin.

EDIT: Another OT perspective: A Delhi-Kasauli round trip will cost an additional 3.5k. Simla round-trip an additional 5k. Manali 7k. That’s when a decent resort charges 10k for an overnight stay!

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Quite impressed with the package it offers. But, my only gripe is will the Thar 5D be okay as a second car for a person, who uses a Innova Hycross Hybrid on daily basis? This made me big skeptical as my dad is keen on having a Thar in our garage as a second car someday but, he was saying that we will get the Thar only if Mahindra comes up with 5 doors as he found 3 door impractical. But, TBH, for our usage, 3 door would suffice as a second car as we have Hycross for other purposes.

If the purchase plan of Thar 5D doesn't work, will get a used, less run 3 door Thar D AT or P AT for mouthwatering price and get it modded as per my taste.

Having been used to rear door windows with a higher door sill, felt that the rear door window of the Roxx is disproportionately bigger (window height wise).

Just a small blackout rendering masking the bits around the middle and rear windows.
This makes it closer to that timeless 3 door look.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

I've owned the Petrol AT Thar 4x4. Wonderful engine. Very sprightly. Stonking performance.
But the gripe with it is that it gets annoying after a while to get it refueled every 250 kms. Yes. That's what happens in real world. You don't wait till the low fuel light comes up. At maximum you'll wait for it to reach near the red portion.
And you'll refuel even earlier if you're heading to some place where there is dearth of fuel.

For example the Badrinath Kedarnath circuit. In peak season they'll restrict the fuel they're putting in each vehicle. So that they don't run out of it. So you need to fuel up multiple times throughout the way.
And 7kmpl is in the city. Mountains and with a decently foot you'll be hovering at around 5. Even less some places.
And then God help you if you're stuck in a landslide Jam.

So for the city use it is still ok. Even then it is annoying to refuel frequently. But if you're out on a holiday these calculations don't run that well and it gets annoying.

If one can live with that then it's a great engine. I couldn't. The charm of that engine fades when you're with family and you need to refuel every couple of hours in the Mountains.
The hilux needed just a single refuel for the whole Badrinath trip recently. Just saying. Peace of mind.

Re: Mahindra Thar Roxx Review

Having been pampered by my Etios' fill-it-forget-it reliability and as a potential first-time Mahindra buyer, I'm torn by the amount of quality issues with Mahindra vehicles.

Many have written about niggles in Mahindra cars. Sure, some electronics feature not working is still a pain, but perhaps the ROXX would be more livable considering the whole package, especially 4x4?

There are many videos out there with 9 out of 10 being a Mahindra. Sharing one from Arunachal Pradesh that shows yet another Mahindra catching fire. One comment said it could be due to extremely low coolant levels. Can such a thing really start a fire? Why so many fire cases with Mahindras?

Jimny has been a love-hate affair. I've had a fair amount of experience with it in my friend's Thunder edition. It's lethargic engine and the fact that the 3-door got a 3 star rating -- which means can't expect much from the 5-door as well considering it's a mere extended version -- aren't inspiring at all. At best, it's an enthusiast's secondary car. Similar cons also disqualify the Gurkha.

Now the ROXX is a completely redesigned platform. Will Mahindra be able to overcome its severe quality issues? Because sans that, ROXX is a done deal for me.

In the northeast, 4x4 becomes a necessity more than just for the usual weekend fun.

I was like, you read my mind

I was imaging myself driving a Roxx, instead of worrying, speeding up whenever I see a broken patch of road My biggest concern with my daily drive C-class.

I'm a sedan guy and never thought that I will get interested in an off-roader. After Jimny came into market, I have been following both Jimny and Thar 3D closely but never got so much attracted to buy any of them. I did push my wife to consider Jimny. She couldn't digest the look of Jimny and after seeing the first Jimny on road, she rejected the boxy shape. She wanted a hatchback and got a Baleno as her daily car.

Since Roxx was unveiled, I have been going through videos and reviews everyday. I'm hooked. Considering 4x4 Diesel top end but worried about DPF issues with lots of city usage. I would love a "go anywhere" vehicle for our conditions.

The wheel was never counted in 4 metres. Only the car length constituted the 4metre mark.
