Safari 2015 to Safari 2024 - Perspective of a Safari Storme owner moving to the new Safari!

So I finally took the plunge and got the Safari Dark Edition ACC+ 4 days back. I was driving a Safari Storme for more than 9 years and planned to keep it for another 6-8 months before parting ways with it, but unfortunately last month the AC conked off and I felt it was time. I sadly let her go last month. I drove her for 150K KMs and have the most cherished memories with her!

Background

I had been looking for a suitable replacement for my Storme for quite a while but just couldn’t find the car in my budget which pulled at the heartstrings like the Storme did. I had closely followed the launch and subsequent journeys of the 3 cars prominently - XUV 7OO, Scorpio N and New Safari.

XUV 7OO is a great car mechanically, with better engines than the Safari but the looks never appealed to me. So, I waited.

Test drove Scorpio N but felt it was too cramped for its size and the huge size just didn’t translate into space inside, especially compared to the Storme. So, I waited some more.

Test drove the pre facelift Safari and was underwhelmed to be honest. The exterior had started showing its age and the interiors, with that awful screen and infotainment, were very meh. More wait!

Bit of a disclaimer at this point: I’m sort of a Tata loyalist and have owned 4 Tata cars over the last 20 years or so! I’ve been following the Tata journey since they launched the Indica in 1998 and have followed all their products very closely. So naturally I’d been excited ever since I saw the H5X concept in Auto Expo back in 2018 and followed the car through the launch and its subsequent iterations. Same for the New Safari, since it was called Buzzard, and was waiting for the correct iteration before giving it a serious look. And that iteration was the 2023 facelift.

First Impressions!

My views are largely keeping in mind my previous ride(Safari Storme), since it’s natural for me to compare every aspect of the car with a clear reference point in mind, including my muscle memory since 9 years is a long time!

1. NO glitches/ niggles, yet! It was almost as if I was expecting some error or the other to pop up the moment I pressed that ignition button! But thankfully, the car ran without any error in the 4 hours that I’ve driven it over 4 drives in mad Mumbai traffic with rains.

2. Driving position - I am coming from the Safari Storme and the driving position of that beast was something else! I never felt fatigued after driving that car for hours and hours at a stretch, the view from the seat was amazing and it was terribly easy to manoeuvre because of the great visibility all around. So the new Safari had BIG shoes to fill in this regard. Unfortunately, I’m yet to find a driving position that clicks for me. While I knew that it won’t be as commanding as the Storme and I’ve made peace with it, I still need to find the best possible position here.

3. Engine and drive: I feel the engine vibrations are minimal and I really don’t feel them while the car is stationary. I feel and hear the grunt while accelerating but in a good way! Haven’t yet got a chance to go beyond 30-40 kmph(Just Mumbai things!) yet so will not comment much on the 3 digit speed behaviour.

4. Ride and suspension: The car feels solid and really well put together, and it comes through while driving on bad roads. Yes, the ride is on the firm side but I guess that’s how an SUV ride should be. Obviously, there’s hardly any bodyroll compared to the Storme which had crazy amount of body roll due to its high center of gravity.

5. Infotainment : Oh that screen! It’s everything I thought it would be after reading and hearing universally good things about it! It’s responsive, intuitive and the display amazingly crisp! Surely a benchmark in this segment. To top it all off, the music system is fantastic, and I haven’t even gotten around to tweaking the settings yet!
I have a question here though, I read on this thread that the infotainment theme and ambient lighting for the Dark Edition is different from the other variants. What’s the difference exactly?

6. Headlights: One thing that’s far from impressive in the car. It almost begs for better headlights. Not sure what Tata was thinking!

7. Build, Fit and finish: Frankly, I wasn’t expecting much since I’ve been a Tata customer from its Indica days and I know it’s not Tata’s strong suit! But I was pleasantly surprised! Apart from very few cost cutting bits - the printing on the control stalks is horrible -I think they’ve done a good job and car feels premium. Love the thud of the front doors!

8. Delivery and booking: Buying a car from Tata is a learning experience! And every time you learn new things about human behaviour, trust me I know since this is my 5th Tata car! This time also it was the usual - overcommitment, erratic responses, and under par delivery experience - my car was delivered without footmats! And they still don’t have it 3 days after delivery!
While they kind of redeem themselves every time after a couple of escalations but you need to escalate nevertheless. Every. Single. Time!

9. The Key – The Storme key was oh so heavy! It felt very solid. The facelift Safari has a larger key but feels flimsy and is very light.

So that’s that for now. I know it’s early days but it’s a good start! Will keep posting my experiences, thanks for reading!

Congratulations

Being a Storme owner myself, I know how hard it is to let it go and find a replacement. I upgraded my Safari Dicor with Storme Varicor and it has proven to be better in all ways.

I also have a 2022 Safari and a 2021 Harrier (both dark) in the extended family. Though I like them both, I really don't like them as much as the storme. Storme is an emotion I guess

Mine is treading in its 7th year but with very low mileage (84k km) and had its AC worked upon recently. I am planning to hold it as long as I can. If I had to replace it today, it would be either Innova Hycross hybrid or new safari, with former being favoured more.

XUV7OO is a brilliant car and I loved driving it. But the middle row was a disappointment when compared to the space and comfort that storme offers. Well, most cars will disappoint you when compared to middle row of Storme. New safari is more car like than Storme and I am sure you will enjoy driving it. Refinement-wise the Storme Varicor400 2.2L is still slightly better than the 2.0L diesel mill of the new safari. I am not sure if safari facelift has become better in that regard. But I am sure you will enjoy the neatly tuned easy to use EPS of the new safari, specially after being used to the heavy HPS of the storme.

No wonder you find new safari headlights inadequate. Storme got powerful headlamps and foglamps which needed no upgrade. Modern Tatas get below average headlamps, ex- my Punch has poor headlamps. Altroz too gets average headlamps.

New safari will be more cumbersome in city traffic owing to larger turning radius. Storme is awesome easy to drive in urban setting with the lowest-in-segment turning radius of 5.4m

Wishing you enjoyable and trouble free ownership!

Thanks Buddy! Aptly put, Storme is an emotion! Even I realized the turning radius of the new Safari is bigger than the Storme only when I drove it out of my parking spot for the first time. It was a revelation to me!

Re: 2023 Tata Safari Facelift Review

Hello everyone, I have been contemplating to upgrade my ride to a big SUV from current hatchback for a year now. First thought of XUV700 but with the launch of Tata twins, I am more towards them.

I love the variant Pure Plus S Sark because it’s the most value for money and also provides all the necessary features. I am not going towards the top variants primarily due to the 19’’ wheels (although they look damn good) and also due to the fact they are 4+ lakhs expensive.

I would like to know from the BHPians who own respective variants:

1. How is the ride with 19’’ wheels in top models? Has anyone faced or heard of any tyre crack?

2. Dear Pure Plus S owners: except 360* camera, what else do you miss in the car? Fabric seats are good enough for summers also I guess. ADAS, powered tailgate, ventilated seats, ambient lights etc can be lived without (my opinion), though 360 is very very imp.

3. Does the dark variant get too hot standing in sunlight compared to other colour/cars?

Yes yes, the 360° camera is probably the most important feature for big cars like the Safari, XUV etc. Parking in tight spaces is a nightmare without it, and a bigger one if your alone and there is no one to guide, and an ever bigger one at night.

The rear view mirror is useless in parallel parking because you can't see small hatchbacks through it, so atleast a rear camera is required. Figuring out the bonnet edges in traffic is difficult sometimes (as a short person 5' 3") where the front camera with guide lines is very very useful. It shows exactly if the car can pass through or not.

So if you can please upgrade to the variant with the 360° camera. Getting it fixed aftermarket is anyways not recommended because you will not get the stock camera quality (it's too good ) and also void the warranty.

I know you mentioned you were a TATA loyalist, but did you consider the Hycross at any stage? Would be interested to hear your thoughts on that one also.

Pure + S Dark is a good variant if you want black color and fabric seats. Adventure and Fearless variants come with leatherette seats only.

1. I don't own a car with 19" wheels. I have Hexa and based on Hexa owners feedback, the 19" wheels are costlier to replace, ride is on firm side and you don't have lot of options to choose from when you want to replace your tyres. This could change in next 4-5 years as more cars are now coming with 18"/19" tyre. You need to maintain right tyre pressure and beware of any big potholes on the road.

2. 360 degree camera clarity is good and will be something you may end up using almost daily. The 3D view and birds eye view will help you navigate through tight spots, take a turn near curb with more confidence and not scratch the bumpers, park with confidence. Once you start using 360 degree camera there is no going back as per my perspective.

3. Black car will definitely get more hotter inside compared to light colored car standing in the same sunlight. The

I would suggest going for Adventure+ Dark variant as ADAS is not in your requirement list. Benefits of going with Adventure+
- 360 degree camera
- Rear window sunshade (Door panel integrated sunshades come handy during summer and you don't need extra space to stow them away when not needed. We regularly use these in our Hexa during trips when sun is hotter)
- Rear defogger (Comes handy during rains when your rear window gets foggy)
- 19" alloys of Fearless variant
- Black leatherette seats with soft inserts on door pads
- EPB with auto hold
- Soft touch dashboard top which is claimed to be anti reflective.
If possible, ask dealership to show you Adventure+ variant if they have in stock to help you take the call.

I sailed the same boat before I narrowed down on the Adventure+ variant.
The features that made me decide were the 360 camera and the front parking sensors.
Believe me, these 2 features were the deal breakers for me.
I asked the Dealer if it was available as an accessory, and they said it was not.
I found it life-saving when a few kids were playing here and there near my vehicle while I was talking to someone. The parking sensors alerted me of them.
Hence went on for this variant itself.

Additionally, you get some more features of
Brown interiors
Rear window sunshade
Fog lamps
Rear defogger
Follow me headlamps
Wireless charger
Air purifier

Lastly, I feel this Adventure+ variant is the VFM variant.
The dealer showroom also feels the same.

I actually went and saw Hycross when it was launched, found the interiors very dull with a really bad screen. More than that, it was the quality of the interiors which screamed cost cutting. It’s a great car no doubt with probably more comfort than the Safari but wasn’t for me.

The Storme is really an emotion and any other car will only feel like a compromise. Last year when my Storme broke down and before I found a good mechanic I had made up my mind to look for a replacement. And then I realised it's so so difficult to replace the Storme. The Xuv700 and new Safari are just "cars". Scorpio N is ok if not for that busy ride quality. Eventually I decided to not let it go since I found out a good mechanic. Also my feelings have been echoed by every single person who has traveled in my Storme. The journey begins by a "wow what a seating position" when they sit in the car first, and then it ends with "Don't sell it" when they leave the vehicle
Having said that and in spite of being unsatisfied by the service of Tata, I think even I would choose the new Safari.

Re: 2023 Tata Safari Facelift Review

All current owners, I had an couple of queries on ADAS functions on Safari.

1.Following the activation of ACC, i receive a "ACC conditions not met" alert whenever i go on to press the Res/Can button on the steering. But, i can continue to use ACC by using the Set+/- (toggling the same Res/Can). So wondering what mistake I am doing here. It looks silly, as the manual clearly instructs that ACC icon turns from white to green upon pressing res/can, but in my case it turns green not after pressing it, but pushing it up or down (set+/-).

2. Also, the ACC distance setting icon on display (when ACC is activated) shows 03 settings displaying changing distance with each press. Which setting should give me better riding experience, as i thought all 03 options led to an autonomous braking experience that is not really enjoyable and sometimes scary. It is always jolty - choose between soft jolts or sudden jolts! I found this calibrated better in Hector.

Can someone help?

Re: 2023 Tata Safari Facelift Review

Does anyone around here know if Amplifier is covered under extended warranty for Tata Safari 2021 model? The dealer has reported that the amplifier is damaged due to some sort of water seepage from AC. The dealer says it's not covered under extended warranty terms. We have been quoted 25,000/- for replacement. Need advise.

Re: 2023 Tata Safari Facelift Review

I recently booked the Safari Acc+ 6S Dark and have been closely following the experiences shared by fellow owners here. While I was initially excited, I now have serious concerns about potential after-sales service (ASS) issues and recurring niggles that many of you have mentioned. I was even considering consulting a third party for the PDI to avoid any surprises down the line.

Given what I’ve read, I am seriously thinking about canceling my booking altogether to avoid losing my peace of mind. I really appreciate all the honest feedback and insights shared here—it’s been incredibly helpful in managing expectations. Any additional advice on how to handle these issues would be greatly appreciated!
