Don't worry. The Jimny will grow on you and continue to surprise as it grows older.
The good ole Jim, takes quite a while to "bed-in" and you will feel the difference after about 4000 off kms.
Change the engine oil, engine oil filter and air filter at around the 2500-3000 kms mark, (by paying, although Nexa will try to dissuade you), and feel the difference in performance.
Braking in the Jimny is in the good old fashioned way of pumping the b-pedal once before applying, especially when downhill (as the vacuum build-up in the Jim's booster is inadequate, because the vaccum is also split amongst the 4wd pneumatic locking hubs).

To tackle the infamous rear end "thwack" or the suspension bottoming out, you can use longer after market bump stops coupled with rear shock extenders or change the rear dampers to a firmer brand of dampers with stiffer valving, while retaining the original coil springs.

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

After some hiccups with the Kylaq purchase, I'm now seriously considering the Jimny.

Though I'm looking to get the MT, had a longish test drive yesterday with the AT since it was the only model available with the dealer at the time. Was really pleased with the handling and driver comfort, the old-school interiors, and also how the car felt in general. And have scheduled more drives with the MT, once they have one free.

The only concern we have now is that my wife is unhappy about thigh support on the rear seats, especially on our longer trips (700~800 km each way, 2~3 times a year). We are a family of 4 - and all between 5'7" and 5'10" (and of slighter builds). Personally I'm okay with overlooking this, though I understand that the thigh support is clearly less compared to some of the other cars we have seen (Kushaq/Kylaq, Elevate, etc.).

Living out in the suburbs, we often drive through bad roads or tracks (but nothing our current Swift and Nano don't handle, if we are careful enough). With the Jimny these would be far easier to negotiate and with no second thoughts.

Now, to anyone who have taken long trips on the Jimny with 4 on board, how bad would the rear seat thigh-support issue be? Is it bothersome at all? And are there any after-market solutions anyone has tried - like a more cushiony seat-cover, or redone upholstery, etc.?

Any person till 5ft 3in-5ft 5in seated at the rear will not have much to complaint about. For anyone taller than that, it will be uncomfortable for sustained long drives. You will have to give regular breaks.

You can ask your friendly neighbourhood seat-wallah to extend the underthigh area a bit. Keep in mind that lenghthening the rear seat squab would mean that you would be eating into rear ingress-egress space too. The greater the length of the rear seat base, the gap between rear door opening aperture and seat base edge will lessen.

Manual is not my cup of tea. So never bothered to look at prices.

Yes, you are right. It is too early to like or dislike it (just like people) and as you said I will have to drive it more and with time I am sure I will get used to its style.

Regarding the rear end thwack, I will dig in the forum and see what is required and will talk to my mechanic in Maruti, if it can be done there. We don't have good quality mechanics here outside and I don't trust their work. Thank you for the suggestion.

Thank you for your insight. Have since taken another test drive with the family, and kids don't find the rear seat comfortable at all. With 2 tallish kids, I'm having to make a tough decision.

2nd row won't be comfortable for long distances for anyone except really tiny people. The only person in my family who doesn't mind it is my 4'11" petite framed Ma, and even she prefers the front passenger seat if it's just the two of us in the car.

Keeping your requirements in mind, I think the Jimny may not be the correct vehicle for you. Take a look at the Tata Nexon. It's spacious, very good ground clearance, excellent high speed stability and very safe. The model line-up has a plethora of powertrain options starting from petrol, an excellent torquey diesel, cng, EV; paired with a multitude of transmission options. You may just find your pick of the litter from the Nexon family brood.

Cheers!

Going by the recent test drive, have no choice but to agree.

Incidentally, the Nexon was one I never seriously considered, despite a strong recommendation from my father - probably because I've driven a Tata (Nano) since 2012. Will definitely look at it now.

Thank you both!

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

Hi! Any suggestions for a Jimny-friendly service centre in Banglore? I just drove down from Chennai and my Jimny crossed the 1000km mark much quicker than I expected so I was thinking it might be better to get the 1st check up done before I head back to Chennai. Somewhere inside the city is preferred as I’m around Ulsoor Lake. Thanks in advance!

Not sure if there is a service center close to Ulsoor lake, you can try Surakshaa at Hosur road or Nexa Pratham at Sarjapura road.

You can try Bimal Auto Agency in Banaswadi. Got my 1 year service done from there. It was a regular oil change service so not sure how good they are for Jimny specific issues if you have any.

Can you please share the video with us? I have been clueless about removing the stock IRVM.

Thank you for the suggestions though I had to fix a place by 8 am so found out this service centre - Kalyani Motors Nexa Service Centre at Frazer Town. This was hardly 5 minutes away for me. Since it’s the first service, I did not enquire further much. But the experience was amazing. There was an advisor, Mr. Neeraj, who was very knowledgable about the Jimny and there was another Jimny being serviced when I got there. We went for a test drive and he was very sincere throughout. To make things better, he owns a Punto and an Abarth as well This service centre is 6 months old and prior to this, he was working in another Nexa outlet.

I checked with the other Jimny owner and he too was very happy with the service centre. Hence I’d recommend this place. The good part is, it’s not just this SA but everyone was really pleasant and ready to attend with all sincerity.

Interestingly, the other Jimny owner and I ended up talking so much and it made me realise the power of cars like the Jimny that make us feel like we are part of a community. Plus, he too drives an Altis, which was shocking as I just bought the Jimny after selling my Altis. It was a day of coincidences and good experiences, car wise!

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

1. Has anybody used a drop in replacement airfilter from K&N or BMC?
2. Has anybody used a replacement box airfilter from BMC like DIA or CDA?

In either case what are the benefits and drawbacks?
Thanks.
