1. EXTERIOR: Decent upgrade though if MG didn't want to invest in designing new tail lights, old Hector Plus tail lights with a very slim joining bar would have been much more contemporary. These tail lights are very garish. Chrome elements in front grill are too many and too big though style is nice. And tyres width needed to be at least 225.

2. INTERIORS: A great job. A good combination of soft and hard finishes. Hard finishes are not cheap looking or rough in feel. Brushed aluminium trim is very modern though poorly fitted at many prominent places. Mood light is a bad joke as it's too bright at night with no intensity adjustment. Can't be switched on at all. Even switch lights are too bright at night and have no intensity adjustments. My 15 years old Accord has them. ECO button has no light (only a leaf icon by the D mode icon in instrument panel) so very difficult to check if it is switched on when vehicle is in neutral. Built-in sunshades in rear doors is a cheap feature and is missed in a vehicle with such great feature list.

3. INSTRUMENT PANEL: Good looking. However, too many features are hidden in menus. At least trip meter and warnings should be permanently visible. And inexplicably - no clock. Navigation mirroring simply doesn't work and always showing trying to correct. TPM info is completely unreliable. Panel brightness sometimes resets to max when car is switched off for a few hours. Night brightness setting affects day setting also. So one is always adjusting it - first time I have felt need to do so over my 8 cars in last 25 years.

INFOTAINMENT SCREEN - impressively large. 360⁰ camera resolution very decent and effective. But too much backlight bleed makes it very bright at night and causes poor contrast. Panel needs an immediate upgrade. Still quite slow and touches are error prone. Whole system hangs frequently and requires restarts. Default music should be Saavan - not USB (or give a choice) & Saavan should load in background the moment car is switched on as it takes too much time to start. Should have at least 10 GB ROM (doesn't cost anything nowadays) for own music storage (with playlist recognition) as pendrive blocks data port permanently and intrudes in space. A big, permanent clock and A/c controls on top are sorely missed by all occupants.

PERFORMANCE: Competent. Engine, gearbox and suspension are better than what I had expected reading various reviews. Just don't expect it to perform like a driver's car.

FUEL EFFICIENCY: Horror. Checked it by filling tank to brim thrice. Just getting 6 km / ltr, driving mixed in city + highway. No wonder HECTOR is the only current car in my knowledge that doesn't show average in instrument panel. MG knows what to hide.

SPEAKERS: Best in class. Though MG should specify wattage in brochure/manual.

APP: Very ambitious in scope though 30% features don't work at all and another 30% give wrong information - e.g: it shows a fuel efficiency of 8 to 16 km/ltr which is absolutely false. MG server is frequently down. Overall a disaster currently but can very easily be improved.

USER MANUAL: Again a very poor job. A mish-mash of old and new Hector , full of wrong and missing information. English is poor frequently. And no one from dealer to MG support knows that like all vehicles, Hector will be damaged somewhat if it is not broken in - ie, driven with restrain for 1st 2000 km, as mentioned in the manual. This short changes customer massively.

BHARAT VI PHASE 2 confirmation. I had taken delivery in March 2023 and had paid 50k extra for RDE version. But MG has still refused to certify that this vehicle is RDE compliant even after numerous emails. Very strange.
I am using my MG Hector Sharp PRO for the last 3 weeks and so far had a pleasant experience. I have complete just over 300 KMS and following are my observations:

1. The 360 Degree camera feature of the car really helps especially in case of a parallel parking situation or a tight parking spot. I was literally worried about this considering the dimensions of the car but this camera really helped. In my society the parking space is also limited and i have to park between 2 cars at times. The clarity of the camera is good.

2. Overall driving experience with this car has been good so far. The car may not be a driver's car, but for people who prefer driving at moderate speeds, the car is an excellent choice. Overall the experience has been smooth so far.

3. The fuel efficiency is something which could have been better. But considering a car of this size and being a petrol one, understand this takes a toll on the efficiency. I am getting an average of 9-10 so far mostly in city conditions. Yet to do a check on the highway. You need to keep looking at the 'Distance to Empty' figures constantly.

4. The infotainment system is sloppy at times. I have observed at times the globe does not appear or it takes a good 15-20 seconds to appear on the infotainment system when you start the car. Even when using the Apple car play, sometimes it switched automatically to the default infotainment system.
Reported this to the SA, mentioned will be taken care of during software update. I am hoping for a better experience in future.

5. The MG app shows some wrong figures and cannot be believed completely. I was fooled by the Tire pressure figures. When i went to the shop, the actual tire pressures were way less than what was shown on the app. Not sure how these are measured. This is something which MG should take note of seriously.

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol CVT

Any clue on the NCAP rating of any of the global versions of MG Hector? Overdrive at the time of launch (in 2019) mentioned that Baojun 530 was rated 5 stars in China NCAP but I could not find the actual results anywhere.

Can we make educated guesses around what stars would the current spec MG Hector achieve one of the NCAP ratings?

Sourav wondering how you are getting 9-10 FE. I have driven around 1200 kms and done roughly 4 full tanks and getting an average of 6 - and Iam a really sedate driver and don’t use the car in peak traffic hours either .

The app was showing 7-8kmpl in trip details but in actual that wasn’t the case

All in all, if I could go back a month, I would not buy this car, and I would strongly suggest everyone to experience these issues in person before deciding to book/buy the car.

" Good Riddance and Good Bye "

This is the latest and last update on my ownership with the 2023 MG Hector Plus.

For the uninitiated, my original posts (review of the 2023 MG Hector Plus Petrol AT) stirred up quite a controversy - which spanned from people not believing me to people thinking I was a plant from a rival brand. I took it all in my stride, and tried to provide as much proof as possible.

So resuming from my last update, I tried to explain the issues to the SC guys. For most of the issues (even critical ones - where the rear cam lagged, central console started in about 90 seconds etc), the SC guys were like - "Sir ye toh aise hi hai / sir ye toh aise hi hota hai".

They, however, did the easiest thing they could do to try and shut me up / satisfy me - they replaced the Turbo in a 4 month old car - since it is the easiest to diagnose, and relatively easy to replace (it must have cost the company, but the SC would have charged the company for the replacement labour etc - so the SC was earning out of this also).

They diagnosed the Turbo issue in April end (if I recall correctly), waited for the new Turbo to arrive, and then replaced the Turbo by mid-May.

Additional stupidity while replacing the Turbo : a car's underbelly was being coated with Anti-Rust in the adjacent bay next to mine. I asked the SC guys to either take my car to some other bay, or move that car, but they didn't budge, saying "tension na lo sir". You can all guess where this is going - next morning under the full sun, I could easily see very small spots of Anti-Rust ALL over my car's body. I immediately called them to notify about this, and 2-3 days later they took the car, got it buffed, and returned it.

So, my new 4 month old car had a new Turbo, and the paint was manually buffed by the SC - which we all know how it's done. All this while, the other issues kept bothering us.

So, around 15th Aug, I again tweeted to the MG handles on Twitter, asking if their HQ team could do anything about the issues - since this was my last attempt before I actually put the car on the block - they referred it to the same old SC - who had the same old approach to the issues.

Around 19th, I decided I had enough, and put the car for sale.

" Car for sale with 3900Km on the Odo, and barely 6.5 months old - in absolute pristine condition (from the outside only) "

Fortunately, I got a couple of very good inquiries, and I closed the sale within 3-4 days. Had to take a big hit, but to me, peace of mind is anyday more precious than money.

That is the end of my MG story. I understand that my car must have been a lemon, but I will never ever buy a MG again. Thanks to everyone who replied to my posts, offered support and criticism - and I again thank you all.

Sad to hear about your ordeal buddy, hopefully the next car that you get gives you a trouble free experience.

Though your case does seem to be a lemon case and incompetent Service center to add on to it, as majority of the issues mentioned by you are not in my car. Wish MG was able to fix your car and given you a better ownership experience.

Thanks ! You have a Panigale 959 ? I'm jealous

Moving on, have booked a Honda City ZX Hybrid. Getting delivery by 29th. You can guess how fed up we were with the Hector Plus issues, that we chose to get a car which just can't go wrong.

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol CVT

Hello BHPians

Received the delivery of my Savvy Pro CVT Hector last Sunday 10-Sep-2023. My previous car was a Fiat Linea Tjet, a turbo charged beast that was really hard to let go of.

One week with the Hector has been great. Exploring the vehicle and what it is capable of. Took it out in Bangalore city traffic as well as long highway runs. The road presence of the Hector is quite something.

A lot has been mentioned about the fuel economy, which I did not expect to be that great considering the size and weight of the SUV. While city driving so far has given a mileage of anywhere between 8-10 kmpl, I have managed to get around 13-14 kmpl on highway drives. Not sure if it is the experience of driving a Tjet for around 9 years that is helping me, but one thing I had learnt early on while driving the Linea Tjet was that flooring the accelerator was not going to help at all. Pulsing the accelerator and coasting while the vehicle is in the turbo RPM range does help with the economy. Waiting for the first service to really push the Hector and test its limits....Will share more in the future...

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol CVT

Hi guys, I'm looking for a new SUV (petrol, automatic) and have narrowed down to XUV 700 AX7 (don't have budget for the Luxury pack) and MG Hector Plus Savvy Pro.
I really like the interiors, plethora of features and posh feeling of the Hector but the engine, transmission and dynamics of XUV have me inclined towards it more.
Is the drive factor too concerning in the Hector? I currently have two TC automatics in my house (Verna and Elantra), so will driving the Hector CVT disappoint me in terms of power delivery? I am not looking for a totally sporty machine but I do like to enjoy the sudden acceleration push every now and then.

Also, can you please share how has your ownership experience and customer experience w.r.t to ASS been?

Please suggest, as this is my first time spending this much on a car and I really want to make a good decision.
My driving would be mostly in the city and a couple of outstation trips per year (~600km trips).
TIA!

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol CVT

Hi

My Hector is not showing Network icon on the center console. I tried resetting the console but now getting activation failed on the home screen.
On the system tab in settings, there is no version displayed on TCU MBOX.

Any idea on how to deal with this?

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol Manual

Took delivery of 2023 facelifted MG Hector sharp petrol manual starry white with black top (dual tone) on the December 7th. So far have driven about 90 km and have been happy with performance on city drives and even occasional highway passes. Compared to my earlier car Ciaz petrol the car feels very peaceful and gearshifts are more slick and easy to operate. Except for my hesitation with the size of the car on roads and in my narrow parking lot and a needed practice in using hill-start assist, I am very happy with the purchase. I wish to keep this car for as long as possible and I feel very safe in the car having in mind the DNA from GM and Volkswagen alongwith the parent company SAIC that has gone into the car. Here are three attachments: the driving score sheet from Hector software, photos of my cars before delivery.

PS. This purchase happened after cancellation of MG ZS EV.

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol CVT

I am considering Hector 2.0 Diesel for next purchase.,
Can anyone share what are the real life diesel mileage in city drive and highway cruising.
What speeds do you normally drive your 2.0 diesel?
Also if any update is made to the ride quality of Hector in last few months? I understand it rides pretty boat like on triple digits on highway.
Thanks.

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol CVT

My 1st time experience with ADAS features in MG Hector

:

This is my first post. Dear Moderators Please correct if I am did anything wrong in my post.

Drove my friend’s car for 300 kms on a national Highway.

Positives:
  • Lane assist works perfectly on highways with proper markings.
  • Overall car is very comfortable on highways, cruising on 100 kmph at ~1650 Rpm and cabin is very silent at this speeds.
  • The display quality and leather touch on door pads are impressive.
  • 120 kmph alert is simple and not loud which is good for long drives. Doesn’t irritate much when compared to other cars.

Negatives:
  • I felt adaptive cruise control is a bummer in MG Hector and we can’t disable it from the menu and use it as a normal cruise control AFAIK.
  • It activates at an early stage and apply brakes suddenly than you required which is quite annoying for the driver and passengers as well.
  • AC controls on touchscreen is quite annoying as you need to touch 2 times to get into AC control screen and then select the temp and fan speed which needs lot of distraction from road. At least physical button for fan speed and temp would have helped a lot. Though it has Max AC button near armrest.
  • Power window switch operation felt cheap. Especially the window roll sound and switch action is equivalent to wagon R or Swift.
  • Screen settings display reminds you of Redmi phone icons which is not good when compared to other display modes.
  • 80kmph alert stays on screen for longer time and blocks other readings on MID.
  • There is no Average fuel consumption display on MID.

Finally a parting shot with Hector along with my XUV 700.

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol CVT

I am trying to choose between Hector, Safari and XUV700. Have a question on Hector. The 14'' screen is expected to do a lot of heavy lifting due to the absence of physical buttons in the central console. We are bit concerned around the software support and more importantly the hardware degradation that the entire unit will experience over the next 3-4 years. Wondering if MG has offered any maintenance plan for the same. I can understand SW can be supported by issuing upgrades. But what about the HW?

Re: 2023 MG Hector Facelift Review | 1.5L Petrol CVT

Sorry for the repeat post. I posted the earlier one, but it didnt get published for some reason. So re-published the one below, and then found the earlier one popping up above this.

The 14" screen is expected to do a lot of heavy lifting due to the absence of physical buttons (e.g., AC controls) on the central console. User experience around such screens is extremely sensitive to both software and hardware. Any idea what is the duration of support for Software that MG is currently offering? Also, how to plan for the degrading HW performance over the next 3-4 years? And what after that?

We are considering between Safari, Hector and XUV 700. Your responses can help us make a decision on Hector quickly.
