I do a 5 tyre rotation every 10,000 kms. It results in even wear. I have been following this for eons now.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

I did an overnight drive to Bengaluru in my THAR RWD D MT last night. Me and mom left Erode at 12:05 am and reached our destination at Thindlu by 4:49 am. There was one coffee break of 15 mts in between.

I never crossed 100 kmph even once and covered 284 kms in 4:30 hrs. Traffic was decent and the time was such that I could drive through the city easily.

MID shows an average mileage of 20 kmpl. Attached picture of the journey timeline

I must add the carlinkit 5.0 worked seamlessly without any issue throughout.

Cheers

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Hello, Wanted to check if any one of you has opted for PPF or ceramic coating for your Thar RWD? The dealer is offering Garware PPF for INR 1,00,000 (10 year warranty on yellowing and 1 year insurance for replacement in case of any accidental damage) and ceramic coating for INR 28,000. My Deep Forest Green Thar MT Diesel RWD has arrived at the dealership. I am going for a PDI today and planning to take delivery over this weekend so wanted to get your suggestions as to whether it is worth it. I have in the past got PPF for my Black Fortuner and find it worth it but considering the limited paint area in the Thar, was thinking whether it is worth going for it. Happy to get your thoughts. Thank you.

PPF on sub 4m car like Thar should not cost ₹1 lakh as there are not too many panels to protect.

PPF is not required as per my perspective as cost of PPF replacement is high as compared to painting the panel again. If the car will be taken to highways, then PPF on the front hood will prevent chipping from flying stones.

If you want to go ahead with PPF, then my suggestion is to get PPF done from car detailing shops who specialize in these things and has good reviews.
PPF done at dealerships may or may not be as good as they don't have dedicated space to apply PPF.

Thank you for your quick revert. This is helpful in taking a decision.

Just to clarify, the dealer is only facilitating the detailing service (PPF/ ceramic) and the work will be undertaken at the detailing shop of Garware and not at the dealership.

I had in fact taken a few quotes from other detailers and the quotes were around 80K-90K plus taxes.

The advantage of PPF based on my experience in the Fortuner has been that it maintains the gloss and protects the paint against minor bruises and sadists who vent out frustration on a good looking car parked in public.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Took delivery of Thar 1.5L RWD Diesel MT in Deep Forest Green colour on 21 December 2024 from Dee Emm, Golf Course Road, Gurgaon. Intend to keep it in stock form and meant for my wife’s local usage mostly.

Always had the fascination for this shade of green which resembles the one used by our revered armed forces and black and white were too common so went ahead with this unique colour to bring in some exclusivity. Driving a car of this kind has always been a dream since childhood days and I was awestruck with the MM Classic and Gypsy in the 90s and even now I look forward to the opportunity of sighting an Army Gypsy, which are generally very well maintained.

Complimentary accessories included rear view camera, hand rest (front and rear), rain visor, mat and mud flaps. Have requested for scuff plates on doors which were not readily available.

Sharing some initial observations (in no particular order) based on my limited driving thus far in the city. Some points may already have been covered so pardon me for any repetitions.

Some positive feedback to begin with:

1. Commanding view with end of bonnet visible from the driver’s seat and great road presence makes it very convenient to drive in the city. I think it sits higher than Fortuner.

2. Power on tap is adequate and there does not appear to be any lag.

3. Gearbox is extremely smooth.

4. Clutch throw is long but is very light making it convenient for city driving.

5. Horn is good and effective.

6. Feels like you are driving a big car though it is not and the sub 4 metre dimensions help in parking.

7. Though it’s winter and difficult to comment on the performance of AC during peak summer but the little that I have used, the AC appeared to be a chiller and was very effective.

8. DRLs are bright and nice. Headlights appeared to be adequate for city driving. Will comment once I have used it on the highways though.

9. Doors close with a reassuring thud and bonnet also has good weight which possibly is the reason for the safety ratings.

10. Front seats provide good back support and there is enough leg space for 2 passengers in the rear seats.

11. Pleasantly surprised with the tread on the Ceat A/T 18 inch Tyres which look good and the ride also is average (considering it’s a Jeep).

12. The touch screen is good and responsive and quality of display connected with the rear view camera is also good and accurate. Haven’t used Apple CarPlay as yet though and will share feedback once I have used the Google maps on it and music.

13. The auto start-stop feature is very helpful in traffic. I am using it for the first time and find it really good.

14. The noise insulation inside the cabin is very well done and one hardly realises it’s a diesel motor and that too a Jeep. No shuddering of the gear too, which is great.

Some not so good observations with the caveat that one cannot be complaining about it as Thar is mostly about the exterior looks and by going ahead with the purchase you are aware of what you are signing up for. That’s true for anyone who is buying it.

1. Brake is adequate but made me feel nervous in the first few Kms considering I am used to all discs in Abarth Punto and Toyota Fortuner, where the bite is very sharp. It’s just about getting used to the Jeep thing though My wife had the same observation and in fact asked if the brake is working properly.

2. Interiors have come a long way since the 1st generation but still there is a lot to be achieved when one compares it with the hatchbacks which are half its price.

3. Fit and finish has improved by leaps and bounds but still cannot match many cars which costs much lesser than it.

4. Ingress and egress even to the front seats is inconvenient and one has to literally climb up the car. Senior citizens will find it very difficult. Grab handles (like the Fortuner and Endeavour) are a must and is the next accessory I will be installing during the 1st service.

5. Ingress and egress to the rear seats is also not easy, though the kids find it adventurous.

6. Lack of dead pedal is a big miss for long journeys.

7. Boot space is best for a weekend getaway and not more. Even my Abarth Punto stores more luggage and being spoilt by the Fortuner’s boot after folding the 3rd row, Thar’s boot appears to be a joke.

8. The rear tyre looks sporty but impacts rear visibility to some extent, which according to me is poor. The rear view camera and rear parking sensors help to a lot extent.

9. Quality of music from the system is acceptable, though not great.

For all the above reasons, the Thar is best suited for small families or individuals or else if it is 2nd or 3rd car or a lifestyle only vehicle. Having said that, love the looks and in spite of the number of Thars and now even the Thar Roxxs that you see on the road, it continues to bring a smile on the face of the one driving/ riding along and also anyone who sees it on the road. It’s definitely a looker and worth all the attention it grabs and smiles it brings!

Leaving you all with a few pictures!

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

25000 km update

My RWD Thar Diesel hit the 25000 kms mark a month ago. It has been a very happy 19 months of ownership. I have had almost zero issues and have visited the service centre only for the prescribed services.

The Avo suspension upgrade has ensured that my highway drives are uneventful and my mom vouches for the same.

I get an average mileage of 17 kmpl with a major portion of the drives on the highway and about 15 % within the city. Nothing much to complain there as well.

The audio upgrade ensures I get my music fix. Apple music via Android Auto keeps me happy on the highway.

Attaching a few pictures.

Cheers

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Hi there! We also have the Thar RWD 1.5 diesel. The lack of an automatic transmission is a real bummer, but the car is very quick and not very fuel efficient. We have a Skoda Rapid 1.5 TDI as a secondary car, and I feel that the fuel efficiency of the Thar is low in comparison. We just hit the 5000 km mark, and so far it is doing well. However, the delivery experience was far from Skoda's experience. The car arrived late and had a def sensor malfunction that the showroom kept putting off, saying that we needed to drive the car a bit faster. My dad got ticked off and left the car at the dealership until it was fixed. It looks like the sensor was covered with fungus, and it was replaced immediately. Another issue with the car is that the windscreen wipers are pretty fragile and lifting them once will lose the tension of the springs. But what I see as an upgrade from the Rapid is definitely the ground clearance. It is a huge boon, as the Rapid scrapes nearly every speed bump it would pass over. In the rainy season, when the streets of Chennai are flooded with water, the Thar just soldiers on with confidence.
Recently, we modified the Thar with a Wrangler grille and ProMan roof lights, which just adds to the absolute absurd coolness of the vehicle. So this is my short review of our beast. This is my first time reviewing a car, so apologies for my mistakes.

Review of the Mahindra Thar RWD LX D MT - 1 Year, 40,000 Kms, Single-Handed Driving

I own a Mahindra Thar RWD for a year and clocked 40000 kms and it has been an adventure-packed journey. The iconic SUV designed for thrill-seekers had launched an RWD version for the lifestyle enthusiasts, and as per my usage I had purchased an RWD version. It has proven rugged in varied terrains and situations. Here's an in-depth review highlighting my experiences, the pros, cons, and overall performance of the vehicle after extensive usage.

Performance and Driving Experience

The RWD variant of the Mahindra Thar comes equipped with a 1.5-liter diesel engine. Despite being smaller than its 4x4 sibling’s powertrain, the engine is surprisingly robust, delivering 117 bhp power and 300 Nm of torque. For city commutes and long highway stretches, it has been a capable performer.

City Driving: The size of the vehicle and high seating position make navigating traffic a breeze. The clutch is light, and gear shifts are smooth, reducing fatigue during prolonged urban drives. But taking U turn is a bit tough job in the crowded city traffic as the turning radius is very high.

Highway Cruises: The Thar RWD shines on highways. It feels stable at higher speeds, with sufficient power for overtaking. However, wind noise becomes noticeable at speeds above 100 km/h.

Off-Road Capability: While it lacks the 4x4 drivetrain, the RWD Thar can handle mild off-road conditions like gravel roads and sandy trails, thanks to its sturdy suspension and high ground clearance. Antiskid and comfort mode in Turboost helps to overcome these conditions.

Comfort and Practicality

Driving solo, I’ve appreciated the driver-focused ergonomics of the Thar. The bolstered seats are comfortable for long hours behind the wheel. The cabin feels rugged yet modern, with features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay adding a touch of convenience. But the wired android auto is little clumpsy to connect the mobile everytime using USB. So, I had purchased the Ourunik Android Auto wireless adaptor to connect the Android Auto in wireless mode which is easy and no clumpse of wires inside the cabin. The

Ride Quality: The Thar’s suspension leans toward the stiffer side, which is ideal for uneven surfaces but can feel bumpy on poorly maintained city roads.

Space: While the front row is spacious, the rear seats are best suited for occasional passengers or extra luggage during solo trips.
I always fold the rear seats and use that space for keeping the luggage as i always travel alone and my rear seats are barely used.

Fuel Efficiency

Over 40000 Kms, I’ve observed an average fuel efficiency of around 11-12 km/l in mixed driving conditions. On highways, with a steady pace, the mileage stretches to approximately 14 km/l, which is commendable for a vehicle in this segment. I had installed a Turboost Throttle Booster which i got from Amazon and it enhanced the fuel efficiency of my Thar RWD around 15-16 km/l in mixed driving conditions and it streches around 18 km/l on a steady pace over the highways when i keep in Eco Mode.

Maintenance and Reliability

The Thar has proven to be a reliable companion. Regular servicing at intervals of 10,000 kilometers has been hassle-free, with service costs ranging between ₹7000 - ₹8000 per visit.
1st Service - Rs. 0.
2nd Service - Rs. 6817.
3rd Service - Rs. 3929.
4th Service - Rs. 7021.
5th Service - Rs. 8033.

But the tyre wear i found is faster as it roams in the multiple terrains. Now the tyres are worn more than 50% after completing 40000 kms and it seems that it can lasts another 15000 - 20000 kms.

Issues

There is a perennial issue in the Thar RWD which is 20 mm tilted to the right side. The height difference from the left to the right in the rear side is 20 mm which makes the vehicle leaned towards right and the Mahindra is not able to rectify this issue after having the lot of inspections, the Mahindra Team had concluded that its within the tolerance limit.

After Sales Service

Service centres are very friendly and prompt to all the queries and issues.
My regular Service Center is Balaji Agencies and Industries, Nellore where i get the service. They were superfast and very helpful to get the periodic maintenance done. But coming to the tilt issue they were not able to give the solution.

Pros

1. Stylish and Iconic Design: The Thar’s timeless appeal never fails to turn heads.

2. Strong Performance: The 1.5L engine delivers ample power for daily use and highway drives.

3. Build Quality: Solid construction instills confidence in safety and durability.

4. Value for Money: A capable SUV at a relatively affordable price point compared to the 4x4 variant.

Cons

1. Limited Rear Seat Space: The rear seats are not ideal for long journeys although i didn't use them but i feel it so.

2. Wind and Road Noise: Cabin insulation could be better for high-speed drives. Boxy design with poor aerodynamics leads to more noise.

3. Ride Comfort: The suspension setup could use a bit more refinement for urban usage.

Conclusion

After a year and 40,000 kilometers, the Mahindra Thar RWD has proven to be a dependable, stylish, and fun-to-drive SUV. It caters perfectly to those who crave adventure but don’t necessarily need hardcore off-roading capabilities. Whether it's the daily grind or solo road trips, the Thar RWD blends practicality with lifestyle appeal effortlessly.

For anyone considering a versatile SUV that stands out in the crowd and offers value for money, the Thar RWD is undoubtedly worth a closer look.

Re: Mahindra Thar 1.5L RWD Review

Got my 1st free servicing done last Sunday. Have managed only 470 Kms as yet. Routine check up which took 30 minutes. I asked them not to wash externally and just clean the interiors and wash the mats as exterior cleaning would have taken about 3-4 hours considering the long queue on a Sunday morning. Got the Shield extended warranty for 2 years for INR 32,000/- with complimentary Teflon coating and under body anti rust paint to be exercised later.

Have been very happy with the car and particularly the road presence. A single honk and you are given way as soon as they see the car in their ORVM. That helps in bumper to bumper traffic. No one comes close. This car is enjoyed the most cruising between 60-80 kmph.

With intermittent use of heater in the AC in Delhi NCR winters, I was pleasantly surprised to get 17 kmpl on the display before servicing. Will update once I get the exact figures post a tank full. After clicking the below picture, it rose upto 17.1 kmpl, which is great for a car of this weight. I used to get similar numbers in my Maruti Vitara Brezza ZDi+.
