Re: 2022 Hyundai Tucson Review

Huge problem with the Tucson 2WD Diesel signature. Car is barely a month old (bought on 10th November) and it suddenly started overheating after a 100km drive. Smoke started coming out of the vents and subsequently the car gave “Engine overheated” warning. We paused for fifteen minutes and then the warning was no longer there. Tried talking to the roadside assistance, but couldn’t reach them. The next day, the problem resurfaced and now the on site road assistance has taken the car to the workshop. Highly disappointed with such an expensive car.

The car has just covered 1152 km with 90% of it in the city.

Maybe, Hyundai has given a lemon. Hopefully they resolve it soon.

This is quite worrisome. Not expected from a costly modern car. Maybe the electric cooling fan has stopped working or there is a coolant leak. The former seems more likely. Incidentally, such failures can happen if there is a rat problem.

Do keep us posted about the actual diagnosis and rectification of the problem by Hyundai Service.

Re: 2022 Hyundai Tucson Review

Sanjay Deshmukh, my batchmate (1969 to 1974) from IIT Kharagpur, is settled in America. Upon learning that I purchased a Hyundai Tucson recently, he wrote :

“Congrats on acquiring a loaded Tucson - sounds very interesting. I can’t help but observe your passion for good cars. Great decision to choose a Hyundai product. I am sure you will enjoy a Tucson.

I have always been a fan of Hyundai from the time I rented a Sonata in the town (Ulsan, South Korea) where all Hyundais were built back in 2005 and fell in love with it with the ride and all features that you could find only in most luxury cars. So when I returned from Ulsan, I bought one. It had all the features that a high end car had and to top it had 10 year warranty, which Hyundai still offers in US. True to its word, never had to take the car to the dealer for any warranty work for the ten years it was under warranty.

My daughter leased (common among younger generation) a Tucson and kept it for the leased period of 3 years and enjoyed it. I have driven that SUV so many times and enjoyed it. I couldn’t help but compare with my ‘crappy’ Mercedes ML 350 (new name GLE 350) and found the Tucson better than the Merc (that’s why I call it crappy). Upon expiration of the lease, she opted for a Hyundai EV Ioniq 5 - which is very impressive with all its features and torque, particularly the self driving features. Much better than Tesla. I am inclined to get an Ioniq myself.

Happy driving! Can’t wait to take a ride with you ! Keep us posted with your experience!”

We are going to have the Golden Jubilee celebrations and reunion of the 1974 batch at IIT Kharagpur in January 2024. Sanjay and his wife are flying down to Kolkata to attend the reunion. I am going to drive them to Kharagpur and back in my brand new Tucson.

I’d rather live life now before life tells me “phir kabhi”
I was in the similar boat a few months back and realised You Only Live Once (YOLO) and ended up selling my 5 month old XUV700 and bought home the Tucson. Took a hit financially but no regrets, so I would say go for it.

On a side note, I have been looking for a dashcam for the car and after a lot of reading threads and what not, I ended up going with the Viofo A229 plus. Samurai had shared a very detailed video of installation but i'm worried that I'll break some panel or the other so I spoke to the Hyundai dealership and they said they'll help with the installation. I'll share my experience in a post soon.

Btw, I am also looking for window shades and my better half is probably going to be in a very nasty mood on our upcoming road trip if I don't find them on time, so I'll highly appreciate if anyone has recommendations around where to buy them from. I literally called all Hyundai dealerships around and none of them has it.

Actually, it was very easy to do. I didn't need any tools other than what was used in that video.

I first installed only the front camera since I was in a hurry to travel, besides I didn't have longer zip ties required for the rear camera installation.

Here is the result of the front install:

I took the front camera cable from the left. Notice that the cable is visible only at 3 places, (i) as it leaves the camera, (ii) as it leaves the door beading, (iii) as it terminates at the power socket.

For the reverse camera installation, I couldn't find a zip tie longer than 8 inches, so I had to connect two of them to extend it to 15 inch.

Here is the path it took to the rear door.

Opening the panel on the rear door was very simple, took just few seconds. Here is the rest of the plumbing.

Here is the result after completion. Now you will notice that the camera is looking through the anti-static film, and the heater line was slightly in the front. So I was not too happy about it. So I removed it and re-attached it using the extra 3M sticker directly. Picking the right spot is quite tricky since the door is pointing upwards while sticking it.

Here is the final result, and I was quite thrilled with it.

So, I decided to go for a drive to record both channels at once. As I left, it started raining, and I turned on the rear wiper. I looked at the rear camera in the rear view mirror and cursed...

The camera was installed on the exact portion not cleaned by the rear wiper. Anyway, I decided to leave it there because moving it any lower would leave a long cable going across the glass.

I can't thank you enough for the step by step guide and the pictures.
I noticed that you took the rear camera cable from the right and the front one from left while the video you had shared earlier took both cables from the same side. I like your approach better to not two thick wires going through the same side. Once again, thanks a ton.

Hello guys! Finally booked the car and the dealer has confirmed the allocation today. Upon request they shared the VIN details. Can someone help me with decoding it?

If you are looking for manufacturing date then this is how I translated it for my Alcazar, should be same for Tucson too.

10th characters of your VIN should be P which is year 2023 and 19th character should be either K, L or M and it means Oct, Nov or Dec.

There is no 19th character. It’s 17 character only.

That's what they will tell you, so that you can't figure out when it was made. But if you lift the hood and take a look, you will find it.

Look at video position 0:01 in the video, you will see the *H in the end. That H is the 19th character.
