Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

Front bumper changed out of nowhere

I was casually browsing social media a while ago and saw something on it. Talked to the people and got involved into booking and making plans for the same.
Here is the result after a quick drive to Delhi:

Mahindra Scorpio-N Review-2024_10_04_22_20_img_0443.jpg

Pros:
(+) Better front protection
(+) Better approach angle
(+) People get scared and stop misbehaving in the traffic
(+) Looks exceptionally good

Cons:
(-) Mileage has gone down by 1 kmpl
(-) Front parking sensors display random detections (can manage without)
(-) Front camera view is slightly limited but still good enough to get the job done

Had decided to book the stay at The Diplomat (Sardar Patel Road):

The design is modular and the bull bar can be removed. If I get fined, I will uninstall it at the earliest.
Drove around at Delhi in broad daylight and faced no issues. Even stopped at one point and asked the cops for directions and they seem to be unbothered by it.

That brings me to the next point. If it is that illegal, then why is it even being manufactured and sold here? I suppose removing the bull bar will fix the possible risk as I have seen even forum members use these type of off road bumpers. I guess people want to avoid losing their number plates and aero flaps on sharp descent.

I am attaching the GO. Cops can be moody in India, sometimes they may ignore everything but during March when there is target pressure, even slight deviations can attract fines.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

My only thought are these legal due to pedestrian protection guidelines? Would advise to remove the bull bar as even in case of a crash as it affects the structure and only caves in with the bumper, not to forget airbag deployment and the front parking sensor blocking described. Trust me, there is no fear of the car at all. Its the thought of you running them down that people get scared - a valid one especially with the recent incidents in Pune, Delhi, Bombay etc.

There is an OEM accessory in the shape of a rod which Mahindra sold for the XUV, Scorpio, which avoid scuffs, dents due to small contacts.

I think your best shot is to get those comments deleted by the TeamBHP FB admin, or a full frontal attack on those cowards.

Sorry, but there's no "protection" offered by this bumper.

You've made it much more dangerous for yourself and especially other road users, which I frankly don't understand why you would want to scare off and capture their reactions.

Just because one cop didn't bother to impound your car doesn't make it legal. Maybe he was scared after seeing the bumper, but you may encounter other braver cops out there.

Also, please don't blame Mahindra when your airbags fail to deploy because you changed how the sensors will sense any crash, or if your chassis gets damaged instead of your OEM plastic bumper, which is designed to deform and absorb energy, especially at low speeds.

I am not defending the person above, but just a trivia Metal Bumpers can be Airbag sensor complaint and other stuff. I did a lot of research when I had the Original Grand Vitara to get ARB / OME bumpers and they were rated and approved Airbag compatible.

Also it can be argued if need be these are not Bullbars rather Bumper replacements. OEM Bumpers no, can be challaned on the pretext of change in structure of the vehicle provided it impacts and interferes with the homologation of the vehicle.

Pedestrian Safety is that is your concern is a different topic.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

Front bulbars were banned primarily from pedestrian safety point of view. Crash protection is the reason there is a huge gap between radiator and engine in case of Scorpio-N.
Metal bumpers with bulbars available in india are copy of ones designed in Australia for protection from kangaroo on highways.
On mild crash also there is possibility of chassis getting bent, i think there was a post earlier.
Mahindra sells rear metal bumper guard which is also installed on chassis which also can result in bent chassis on impact.

Quote from ARB about bull bars - can extend to bumpers too.

"With an air bag equipped 4x4 it is essential that the vehicle's crush rate and air bag triggering is not altered when a bull bar is installed. To ensure compatibility, ARB assesses each vehicle's frontal crush characteristics and replicates the crush rate into the design of each air bag compatible bull bar and its mounting system. This method enables engineers to achieve maximum possible vehicle and passenger protection without affecting the crash pulse. ARB has invested heavily in vehicle crash barrier tests to validate the performance and compliance of its air bag compatible bull bars, and as a consequence, our bars offer a far greater level of protection than most standard brush guards and grille guards.

Please note that a few of the bumpers for older model vehicles are not air-bag compatible, refer to the Vehicle Application Guide for confirmation."

Obviously this jugaad copy from Prad is not crash tested. But the bigger concern is that other people are at risk from someone's decision to install a bumper to scare fellow road users.

Well, that is my plan, to have the bull bar uninstalled. But the bumper remains.

In fact there are bhpians with iron bumpers and bull bars, who are like me, i.e. afraid of losing the number plate or parking sensors in a ditch or a water crossing. Afraid to break the radiator lock carrier.

I will continue my offroading escapades with Mahindra Adventure events and more. I feel that the criticism won't stop because that's what people.
In fact, I will stop writing humourous posts because it is sometimes taken way too seriously.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

Couple of things to consider when adding a Crash Guard to a 4 Wheeler.

1. It will deeply diminish the deployment of airbags in the event of an unfortunate head on collision.

2. In the event of an unfortunate accident the damage the crash bar can cause to other vehicle / humans increases many fold.

Technically crash bars are illegal on vehicles and subject to stoppage by traffic cops and hefty fines.

For point 1, most modern day vehicles have accelerometer/g-sensor based airbag deployment. So it is essentially the deceleration influencing the activation than some sensors in the front bumper (there's nothing on the stock one besides parking sensors and lights)

For point 2, I have already commented about twice now that I will get the bull bar removed. I have no idea about how many times I have to post the same thing again and again

Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

Has someone tried using 5W-40 vs the recommended 15w-40 on the Diesel AT? Especially for those in North India - 5W provides better engine protection during cold starts and apparently has a similar high temperature protection!

The Delhi winters are coming and I plan on a visit or two to the Himalayas this season. Thoughts?

Could you please mention the source of 15W-40 reccomendation by Mahindra. Mahindra has stopped mentioning engine oil grade in the owner manual/ engine bay. Even the oem UltraV4 6 ltr pack doesnt have the oil grade mentioned.

You are right. Since I could not find it on Team-BHP, Google AI returned the result that Maximile Ultra V4 is 15W40. But when I actually checked the reference, Maximile Ultra is 15W40. I don’t really know the grade of V4. Would you know?
