Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

Battery warning light issue is ongoing in my Scorpio N Z4 AT as well. Have clocked 2700 kms so far. Checked the battery voltage, which was found OK at the Mahindra Service Centre. They tightened the battery terminals and asked me to monitor the situation over the coming few days. Alternator could be the next suspect, which they will check next. I get the battery warning illumination after an hours drive, usually. It goes off and on erratically thereafter.

Could be totally correct. I usually drive with a heavy foot. Will try changing my driving style and observe for a few days.

Keep us posted. So it looks like I'll have to make multiple visits to the service center. Not good for a new car. But it is what it is. Let's see. Thank you for the info.

The whole assembly. No change in part number. Just a modified batch.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

Another Scorpio-N got burnt, video link below. This was a 4xplor model like many of us here. I would like to know if we need to look for any specific signs in our cars to prevent such disasters? Like coolant level check or engine level checking etc? I am sure that all the fire incidents must have given some signs before they got burnt.

I am facing this niggle for more than a year now on my Z6-D-MT

I also reported this problem to Mahindra, demonstrated multiple times to their ASS, but they are unable to find any solution.

After the vehicle is driven for a while, stopped and engine is restarted, the Cruise control refuses to work soon after. The behavior is different in intra-city driving (typically when driven at speeds not exceeding 60-70 kmph) and on express-ways (when vehicle may have exceeded 100 kmph). And this occurs irrespective of whether the engine is turned off manually after driving or due to auto start-stop e.g. at traffic junctions.

(a) Intra-city: After re-starting the engine, Cruise control will not work (it can go into standby mode, but doesnt engage) initially for several minutes. Sometimes it re-starts working if attempted to engage again after driving around 2-4 km or after 5 to 6 mins after engine restart.

(b) Faster Expressways: Cruise control refuses to go active for atleast 1 hour or 100+ Kms after engine restart.

I noted that every time I drove on Samruddhi Mahamarg, typically around 100-110 Kmph, this happened EVERYTIME I stopped for refueling/regular break and restarted the engine. I had 12 trips on this road now, and I find this extremely irritating, dangerously distracting and tiring to drive long distances on that toad when cruise control fails. On a few occasions, after such breaks/engine restarts, I was forced to drive 220+ Kms or 2 hours without cruise control due to this bug, till I took another break. I even tried stopping vehicle on shoulder (dangerous), lock/unlock/restart vehicle to see if it resets, but the cruise control would not engage again. It restarts working at random, sometimes after the next halt, or after getting off the expressway. Unbelievably strange behavior indeed.

I am not sure if is linked to vehicle speed exceeding 100 Kmph for a while before vehicle is brought to halt and engine restarted, or there are any other specific conditions such as engine temperature, location (why should it happen on Samruddhi expressway only, driven for several tens of Km or using cruise for over 20-30 mins without applying brakes, or ambient (BTW, it happened in cold Winters, during Rains as well as as during hot dry summers) or any other conditions.

But Mahindra is not engaging it's R&D and not able to solve the problem. I am sick of escalating it multiple times.

Few other niggles in my car:

1. BAD QUALITY REVERSING ASSIST CAMERA: A few months back, got a reversing assist camera kit from Bhavna Mahindra, Navi Mumbai. The display output is a bit noisy, and is certainly not HD quality. Guide lines are static and they don’t move with steering angle/vehicle direction. So this works like the typical cheap standalone cameras worth Rs. 400 on Amazon/rural accessories shops.

2. LONG BOOTUP TIME OF ICE: The ICE takes forever to go past the disclaimer screen when vehicle is re-started (cold or warm after a short break). Often more than 45 seconds, and the time taken is also not consistent. When this screen is stuck at disclaimer note, and the reversing assist (camera output) is not displayed. It becomes tricky to remove vehicle from parking during such situations. I am used to getting in and out quickly with all my other vehicles.

3. While reversing, music volume stays high instead of reduction to minimize distraction

4. Sometimes gritty / notchy gear shifts.

5. AC emits foul smell in cabin for few minutes after the AC switch is turned off when fans are still ON. Had to replace the cabin AC filter recently, which actually looked clean and without smell. I am keeping it under observation after the filer change.

6. POOR DESIGN OF BOOT DOOR: Water and dirt gets deposited on the boot door hinges and on cable strain relief/protective rubber boot, even when the door is not opened/used. It attracts lots of insects, spiders and needs to be manually cleaned every few days, some even entering the vehicle through that route. Either the rubber seal is missing or bad. Further, lots of dust/leaves etc keep gathering in the gap between the boot door and roof, and then suddenly everything falls inside the boot as soon as the door is opened. I fear any snake / reptiles / fire-ants / lizards falling from tree branches above could enter the car through this route (may go unnoticed in dark) and the hinges/area around it could rust.

7. AUTO-SINKNG DRIVE SEAT: Driver seat keeps sinking automatically (lowers height without manual use of lever) after driving few kms. Seat height reduces faster if vehicle is driven on rougher roads, and needs to be repeatedly adjusted using the lever. I guess the seat holds its position due to friction, but the friction is insufficient to retain height and keeps going down.

8. UNPREDICTABLE ICE: ICE selects random source of music, irrespective of which source was last used. When vehicle is started/re-started, ICE uses one source of music first, and after few seconds switches to any random source automatically without manual input. This happens irrespective of the source - FM radio, Mydrive, external pen drive (but rarely moves to bluetooth).

9. CRACKER SOUNDS: Random Phut phut sounds from speakers after engine is shut, car locked, and opened again within a few minutes.

10. RANDOM ALARMS: The screen throws random alarms once or twice a month. However, goes off after I shut/lock the car and re-open and restart. Sometimes the hill hold light comes up (even if not used before), check engine lamp, DPF, and can be multiples at any time etc. Sometimes both the ICE and cluster screens go blank, and I have to stop the vehicle, lock/unlock/restart which makes all these alarms go away as if nothing happened.

11. Vehicle does not remember the driving mode zip/zap/zoom. Have to set it each time the engine is restarted. Sometimes just switches automatically at random to “Zap” mode without user intervention.

12. Laggy/buggy infotainment: Scrolling of content/songs in any music folder using the right knob gets abandoned often. Screen is laggy and erratic too. So difficult to scroll 6-8 pages down to select song to play.

13. When using Android-auto navigation, if a phone call is received or originated (and disconnected), the infotainment system refuses to switch back to navigation screen, do whatever. It auto-switches to “Phone mode” even after pressing the HOME physical button or selecting any screen on ICE. Have to restart the infotainment system to restore normalcy.

14: NAVIGATION ISSUES: The native navigation never worked properly for me. The screen / orientation and location dot keeps moving, self location shown is sometimes off by over 100 kms from actual. I am therefore using Android auto. But this is also not stable and occasionally is unable to provide proper navigation, even if the phone is kept on dashboard (assuming the GPS signals will be weak in the cavity near charging ports)

I have highlighted these niggles to the ASS and also the regional service managers. The ASS says most of these are software issues, and cannot be resolved in the workshop, unless new firmware/software fixing these is released and then installed.

I have got atleast 3 software updates for the the ICE and 3 for ECU during last year, none of these solved these problems. The cracker sound has reduced but not stopped.

Does anyone is also facing similar issues?

Put the car in ignition (engine not running) mode. Switch on the parking lamp. Switch it off. Switch it on again. Turn off the ignition. Parking lights will stay on.

ScorpioN Driver seat height mechanism fails

Dear Fellow BHPians,
I have been a member of Team BHP forum for last two years. I have been regularly reading all interesting updates, issues, perspectives shared by many of the Team BHP community members. Today I want to share a very unique and weird issue I am facing in my ScorpioN Z6 manual driver seat.

I purchased my ScorpioN in May 2023. after driving it for 4-5 months I could feel that the driver seat height needs to be frequently adjusted, every 15-20 days. As I am the only driving person and hence no one changes the seat height. then I became a bit suspicious if the seat height mechanism is working properly or not. When I got deep into the issue faced, I checked and counted on different height levels for the driver seat. In ScorpioN Z6 D Manual variant, the driver seat has 0-21 levels of height adjustment. I normally set my seat height at level 14. So to confirm on my suspicion and observation, I set the driver seat height at level 14 and drove the car for 7-10 days. Whenever the car crosses a hard breaker on high speed and break is applied, a sound of "tak or khad" comes from the side of the driver seat height adjustment lever. But this sound is not consistent, it may happen or not, its purely a coincidence when this happens. To my surprise when I checked the seat height once again after 10 days, it was at level 11. So I could find the issue and accordingly took the car to Silver Jubilee Mahindra in Pune in Feb 2024 month.

When I explained the whole issue and problem faced none of the technicians/staff members were ready to believe as not a single vehicle had reported this issue earlier. Then one of the technician accompanied to me to check it for himself. While driving the car in Magarpatta City, crossing one of the pot hole, the unique sound of "khad" came from the driver seat and it was captured in the video which I was recording in my phone kept on the rear seat - middle row. Though the issue was explained and demonstrated to Mahindra technician in person but they just re-torqued the nuts & bolts. I was also hopeful that this will fix the issue.Due to change of my job, I was not able to drive the car during March-April months and could not see if the problem has been sorted out. To my dismay, I realized the problem is still there when I drove the car from Pune to Bhubaneswar. Today when I went for the 10K 1st annual service, reported the problem to service manager. He appointed one technician, and I ran the same drill. This time also the issue happened and the technician agreed that the issue is with the seat height mechanism.

Request the fellow BHPians to share some information or inputs on the issue faced in my car’s driver seat height mechanism.

Discovered something really strange today. I had done it in my Indica and it had worked. Didn't work in my Honda City. Just for testing purposes, I tried it on my Jan 2023 Scorpion N (Jan 2023 - Z4 AT DL - 29700+ km).

I filled my tires with 38psi. And the ride quality has improved drastically. The continuous vertical movement on bad and semi-bad patches has reduced considerably. Moreover, the handling and body roll has never been this good. I am super impressed. It feels more like a monocoque now.

I have Rogerabs installed from Day 1. It had reduced the pitching. However, this bump-up in psi has worked wonders, at least for me.

So here's what I am going to do:

Tyre psi in the city: 38 psi

Tyre psi on highways/long drives: 33psi

NOTE: 38psi for highway runs could be dangerous.

Sorry to hear about the seat issue you are facing. It seems like a manufacturing defect. You should ask to replace the complete seat, as it is under warranty. I am sure Mahindra shouldn't have any issue with the same. Try Aditya Mahindra on the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack highway. My experience with them is better compared to other service stations.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

Meanwhile, the prices for Scorpio N have increased since March 2024. Z2, Z4 and Z6 variants (RWDs) have got dearer by ₹25k. Z8 & Z8 select (only RWDs for both) have seen a price rise of ₹10k in the ex-showroom amount. Interestingly, the price for Z8L and all 4x4 variants have remained the same.

The pace of price hikes these days is really worrying.

Here is the chart. The source for March 2024 price is the dealer's quote which I had received while booking. The current price has been fetched from M&M website. All are ex-showroom prices.

The noise is origination from the front right dashboard over rough/uneven roads - the infamous KAD KAD noise. After a lot of checks the dealership came to the conclusion that the whole dashboard needs to be opened to identify the exact spot from where this noise is coming. I refused because it's still a relatively new car and I know the fit and finish of the dashboard once they reinstall will never match the factory fit.
I have had the same issue since day one. Been over a year and the dealership + Mahindra are completely clueless.

My local service center here in BLR quoted 2 hours to fix this. Interestingly, the job card that they have opened only has the retorquing of the steering column bolts mentioned, there is no mention of alternator pulley replacement. To quote, "STRG I-SHAFT MTG BOLTS LOWER RETORQUING" is what is mentioned in the job card.

I'm not sure if this is the norm, but the local dealer here was offering to send the technicians home to fix this, felt quite proactive on M&Ms part.

This issue usually crops up if I slot the transmission into Reverse gear before the infotainment has had a chance to boot up completely. I feel it's a bug in Mahindra's SW that can probably be fixed with a future update.

A quick restart of the car does not power down ("shut down") these automotive SoCs. After the vehicle is turned off, these SoCs are kept alive for a long time in a low-power state, sometimes to dump a lot of debug information about the system. It's only after the car has been left idle for a long time do they really power down. Disconnecting the fuse/ battery forces the SoC to power down, that's usually what they do in the service centres as well.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

It is hard to believe so many niggles being reported by many owners for such a beautiful piece of machinery. Is there a car/suv currently available in India where one can invest with peace of mind? If I pay close to 30L of hard earned money in a vehicle shouldn't I be reaping the benefits of the product for an elongated period rather than counting niggles? Wouldn't it be a fair desicion to rather invest in a used suv that has exhibited bulletproof reliability and a niggle free experience rather than newly launched vehicles (no offense to any owner).

I am still waiting to find one such Solidly built niggle free vehicle that can carry the entire family on any kind of road trip without a single doubt about the vehicle, any thoughts?

(cough cough)

There exists one that can comfortably family and luggage throught any kind of road without a single doubt or worry. But don't expect ADAS, sunroofs, SUV styling, automatic transmission option(for brand new). Priced similar to ScorpioN and is the only surviving BoF in the segment other than ScorpioN.

Re: Mahindra Scorpio-N Review

Link Autocar - Scorpio N, Scorpio Classic order backlog reduces to 86,000 units

Quote:
In just the last quarter, Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic had over 1 lakh pending orders.

Mahindra has announced that it has 2.20 lakh open orders for its SUV line-up as of May 1, 2024. Of this, the Scorpio range (Scorpio N and Classic combined) has the highest pending orders of 86,000 units. Overall order backlog is a marginal reduction from 2.26 lakh units that Mahindra reported in last quarter; the Scorpio range, however, sees a more significant drop in pending orders from 1.01 lakh units.

Mahindra announced that it receives 17,000 bookings on average per month for the Scorpio N and Classic combined. The company, however, has managed to reduce wait times on the Scorpio N considerably – it is currently at a maximum of 3-5 months for both petrol and diesel variants, down from a maximum of 9 months from end of 2023.

Waiting period on the Scorpio Classic is also up to a maximum of 5 months, although this has remained relatively unchanged from the previous quarter. Mahindra, however, did not reveal the exact split of pending orders between the N and the Classic. Other popular SUVs such as the Thar and the XUV700 have a pending orders of 59,000 and 16,000 units, respectively.
