This is part of the reason why I canceled my booking for the 340i and got the 330Li instead.

Sure I love the hydraulic dampers at the front and the 5-link axle at the rear in the 3GL, but there are times that I wish I could have the B58 for a few seconds so I could just floor it(have done it a few times in Sport Plus and won't forget it).

Smart choice mate 3riller, sometimes Pune's roads make me think about whether I made the right choice and then as you've mentioned the times that I do get to experience the engine (still haven't had the courage to go full sport+) it more than makes up for it. Happy motoring and safe travels!

Re: BMW M340i xDrive Review

Thanks, BeMyWings! You have the most perfect car, don't worry about the suspension and ground clearance much and enjoy it! There are people who're driving GT3 RSs now in India and that thing is hard as a brick.

What!? Thought every owner bought it for that very reason. I floored the m340i in S+ the first time I sat in it. The most powerful car I had driven before that was the Taigun GT stock. I was kinda hesitant to do at first but the test drive guy urged me to try S+ to feel the rush.

You need to be super careful though as it gets to 180 and above in seconds and you eat the road in front of you faster, but you'd be fine as long as it's an elevated road that you know and you have enough of a free stretch in front of you with room to brake without having to stand on it. (I am not advising or recommending anything, but hey you can bring the car in for a track day and experience the same while ensuring everyone's safety.)

I was on the EC Flyover in Bangalore which is elevated, pretty long and I got a free stretch with no vehicle in sight(that's rare in B'lore). The first second was fear as it pushes you back with good force, but then it quickly turned into fun as the redline approached for each gear and the engine(and speakers lol) screamed. Also got a few pops and bangs when I left the pedal even though it didn't have the MPE.

Do give it a try on the backroads of Magarpatta, when its safe and I think you will have the grin that I had on the 340. The M Differential comes into play on that bend and it's so satisfying. Unfortunately there are very few roads in the city that give these bends. On a very different topic, I got a chance to try the M2 yesterday and I can't tell you how great that car is.

Thank you 3riller, that's my philosophy as well, don't worry about the bumps in the road, enjoy the drive! Sports mode will have to wait, I just want to be careful and gradually get to that point.

Thank you, Cedric, definitely will take that route up soon enough!

On a separate and unrelated note, I had the privilege of navigating home after the severe rains in Pune on Wednesday evening. In all my infinite wisdom, I thought, lets trust Google maps (because the alternate routes showed +30 mins). When I checked the route, it showed me the most twisting and winding roads through the internal roads of the Kharadi/Wadgaon Sheri/Kalyani Nagar parts.

I reach half way through with no trouble, my first heart-in-my-mouth moment occurs when I see a river flowing through the road and cars gingerly wading through. I pray to all the gods (human, divine, marvel, dc, etc. at this moment anyone will do). I gingerly wade through the first mini river, keeping the throttle constant and moving along slowly but keeping a consistent pace of 20kmp/h, all the while watching for any deep ditches.

Now, repeat this about 4 times, and also add in one rock that gave my alloys a love-bite (crawl speed, no damage to the rims or wheel thankfully!) and you get a sense of how I got home that night. I'm grateful, I did reach home safely and hope this never occurs to anyone else.

What I learnt from this experience is that these cars are pretty hardy and not as fragile as we might assume. Obviously, you can't go storming into deep water, but with enough care, these cars can be a daily driver.

Pretty sure that after this experience, this is going to be the daily driver for me!

No photos this time, apologies! I wish everybody and their families safe motoring and travels!

Finally bit the bullet and decided to upgrade my 2017 Melbourne Red 320d to the 2024 Tanzanite Blue M340i, I will be taking the delivery in the coming week. I look forward to sharing my thoughts on owning the new beast with the legendary B58.

Re: BMW M340i xDrive Review

Great to hear that you got through safely while water wading. I am not sure as to how low the air intakes are in the M340i but I would not go in waters more than 150mm deep if I can help it.

Also make sure that you remain in Manual mode with 1st or 2nd gear engaged so as to keep the engine rpm high and prevent water ingress into the engine through the exhaust.

And most, most important, make sure that the engine start stop feature is turned off. This is of absolute importance before venturing into any flooded area.

Cheers.

Thank you AAD, I appreciate your insight and will keep in mind your advice. As our weather gets worse and we have more adverse weather, maybe you could share a write up as a separate post that helps us to stay safe during these events. I'm not giving you more work, just something I think might help us all

Re: BMW M340i xDrive Alloys

Hello, the car completed more than 3500kms of trouble free driving except for a slight rattling somewhere from the left side. This is apart from the frustrations of driving in traffic, one of the biggest moments of joy I get when I see a someone else on the road be happy and they smile at me, and I usually give them a thumbs up. You won't believe this, on one of my daily drives to office, an auto driver was so happy with seeing the car and seeing my reaction (because I smiled and said hello). This has happened numerous times.

On a separate note, please can you help me answer the following?:
  1. Will they suit the car?
  2. Will they fit?
  3. What expense can I look at (PM please) if I was to import?
Planning to go Richard Burns Subaru Color theme, so I selected these

Mon ami, to your question of these wheels fitting the car, I'm fairly certain you will find that it will.

Whether it suits the car is a better question. Wheel choices are deeply personal, and for me, these wheels fall short on two counts:
  1. Champagne gold would not be a bad look, but it wouldn't be my first choice of colour for a Tanzanite Blue M340i. I like the way silver pops against the deeper blue of Tanzanite
  2. The wheel design you shared is classic, but rather generic. You can do a lot better if you're changing the wheels. And if your heart is set on only this design, why not look at BBS? You'll be able to get it locally. Source it from Mumbai, via someone like Redline Autohaus. They're very price competitive and a godsend in such scenarios

I think the price of importing it would make things too prohibitive. You'll be paying in USD, plus a 30% or so custom duty for importing it. Avoid. Talk to some local Mumbai/Bangalore based shop and check out some of the stuff from HRE, Vossen, etc. HRE FF10's are pretty good, but if the aim is to stand differentiated, I would pick something like the Vossen HF-2's. Everybody will see you rollin', but no one will be hatin' on those wheels.

I won't suggest wasting your money on such wheels. BMW has one of the good-looking ones already. If you must upgrade look at some stuff here

Re: BMW M340i xDrive Review

The eternal question of Ceramic vs PPF - I don't even want to go down that rabbit hole

Here are some of my experiences with PPF:

Experience:
  • One bump on the left and right mirror - luckily no damage either visibly or functionally
  • I've learnt to close my mirrors (when needed ofcourse, I'm blind without them otherwise)

Advantage:
  • No visible or functional damage (other than to my blood pressure!)
  • Mud and muck cleans off very easily without too much effort
  • Stones and sticks may break my bones, but not my PPF!

My OCD sometimes notices the peeling of the PPF in some portions. But then, I just go the 3M center, and he fixes it for me.

I just need to figure out a comfortable seating position, 3500 kms later, and I'm still trying to find it.

Re: BMW M340i xDrive Review

I just picked up the m340i a week ago. I am trying to understand if it is possible to downsize the rims to 18" from 19". Has anyone here tried? I read on some forums that m340i's sold internationally do come with the 18" wheels, but the dealer said it would not be possible. But, I'll ask them to give it a check during my first service.
