While technology may have a great deal of finesse, but the basic principle will still remain the same. At a signal stop with gears engaged in automatic transmission, IMHO, the energy produced by the engine and transmitted to the gear box will have to be compensated by brakes and wear and tear of clutch and gears. Neutral at signal is thus both saving on fuel and the wear and tear.
Which clutch are you trying to save my friend.
That’s in a dual clutch gearbox like the ones in Audi/vw DSG or Hyundai DCT.
This is a torque converter and it doesn’t use a clutch to start or stop the car. The torque converter fluid just flows around at low engine rpm without doing anything. Similar to how if a boat propeller was moving extremely slowly, it wouldn’t cause the boat to move but it wouldn’t cause any wear and tear on the propeller either.

Re: BMW 3-Series Gran Limousine Review (Long Wheelbase)

TCs may have a clutch assembly / friction discs https://www.team-bhp.com/news/know-w...ansmission?amp. However, for TC as well, there will be fuel loss in addition to additional traction related wear and tear on clutch / friction discs and brakes to completely halt the vehicle in one position.

I prefer to shift to 'N' at signals to reduce the fuel wastage, thereby contributing my bit to "green earth" and also save on excess pressure on brakes.

Refer this thread for more https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...-lights-2.html (Automatics : P or N at signals / traffic lights?)

It's totally your call but - maybe try it for a few days and see how it goes?

In your LCI, I believe the Auto-Start-Stop either cannot be switched off or can be done only by going into the MFD menus/sub-menus. Check and let us know?

In my BiL's 2024 X3M40i in the US, it cannot be switched off, but maybe that is a US-only quirk to meet CAFE requirements.

Some funda on this 48v system:
https://www.bmwblog.com/2022/08/23/b...-mild-hybrids/
The A-S-S is comparatively smooth and transition between switch off and on are not jerky. Checked with the sales person and he confirmed that G28 comes with mild hybrid and 48v system. Hope he is correct.

I tried switching off the A-S-S, but don’t see any option to switch it off in the infotainment. I have asked the sales guy to confirm with the technician. Let’s see.

Also as per the user guide, it’s mentioned without mild hybrid technology vehicles A-S-S can be switched off from Apps Menu. I tried this and don’t have that option.

Also he confirmed no need of shifting to N like DSG on traffic. So I might try the Hill hold function for few days and see.

Thanks again for the details

Congratulations for your purchase! I feel the only two things that are an upgrade are the power (bhp numbers) and the badge. In almost every other thing, Octavia is a superior car from 330i.

As much as I loved Octavia, interior quality, build, interior space and the overall feel of drive and luxury are superior in 330Li. But on practicality Octavia wins hands down. But then Octavia is a tough car to beat, considering it’s almost half the price of 330Li. Even after using it close to 9 years it aged well and was flawless.

Almost totally disagree.

For a driving enthusiast who plans to self-drive his/her G20/28, the stock Octavia 1.8/2.0 twins cannot hold a candle to the former. Only when one adds the RS230 & RS245 twins is there any comparison at all.

Disagree on so many levels. The feeling of an upgrade is so subjective, but to generalise a 330i not being an upgrade to an Octavia seems far fetched.

After seeing both the cars next to each other today, I am happy with white considering the blackened elements in M Sport Pro. The showroom was very busy today with many deliveries of X1, 3 series and couple of M340i and 530 Li.

What I Liked:
  • Absolutely a looker, especially in M Sport Pro trim
  • The M headliner Anthracite upholstery in dark grey shade gives a very sporty look
  • The performance is super impressive, even after coming from a stage 1 Octavia TDI. The engine has a good note while in sports mode
  • The handling is good, it’s not as soft as I expected. Still there is an underlying stiffness which I like.
  • The big screen infotainment elevates the interior, the Apple CarPlay display is wide

What I don’t like
  • Coming from an Octavia, the boot space is a joke. Need to plan the Kerala trips well now, considering all the fruits, vegetables and other things that I am made to carry in Octavia.
  • Rear sun shades - come on BMW, how much you would have saved in that!! Even Creta has it.
  • No physical controls for AC
  • The BMW warning assistant needs getting used to. In some instances I can feel the steering correcting itself and becoming very stiff.

Overall I am super happy with the purchase. Feel it’s the perfect upgrade from my Octavia. However still missing that stiff ride in Octavia with B6. After warranty I might put B6 in BMW.

On another note looks like new 530Li is selling great. There were 2 of them being delivered today in the dealership. Also when I went for puja to the temple in Kasturba road, Bangalore, saw another four new 530 Li for puja. Strangely all 6 cars that I saw today are Titanium Brown colour.

Congratulations on your new ride. Also good to note our cars share a birthday. Looks beautiful especially in the white colour. How's the comfort compared to the Octy?

Thank you. Congratulations on your M340i too. And it’s indeed great that we picked it on the same day from same dealership. Infact I think we got it delivered on the most busiest days.

In terms of feel good factor, it’s a big step up from Octavia. Ride and handling is definitely much superior to stock Octavia. Infact 330Li glides over all those small imperfections superbly, obviously need to be careful will low profile RFTs. The passengers have also been very impressed with the ride quality. The high speed drive is flat and the car handles the curves very well.

However since my Octavia was running on B6 with 225/45/17 tyres it had excellent high speed stability and handling, dare I say, almost close to 330Li. But that’s also because I was more confident to push Octavia, but with 330Li (since it’s new and getting used to) I am still not pushing it. In ride quality, 3 is much better than Octy with B6.

Congratulations Sunikkat on your new Beamer, I got the same car last year, in Grey colour. Still love driving the car, and till date haven't found the limit to this car, that B48 + ZF8 combo is

I'm coming from Endeavour so you can imagine the boot space difference I've had to accustom to, but all in all, it's a great great trade off, for that drive, comfort, and that pure smile when you rev it. Plus, in no way is it not enough.

Agreed with the rear sunshade, even my W205 C200 has them and they're a boon in this city's heat, which is there at least 9 out of the 12 months of the year.
Also surprised we don't get ventilated seats in this segment, whereas you get them in sub 20L cars, albeit manufactured in India, but how long can these German brands keep missing out like this.

I've always kept my A/C on auto mode at 20-21 C on dynamic mode and never really needed to fiddle with AC controls as such. Try fiddling with the auto settings once or twice, you might find your sweet spot.

May I ask what warning assistant are you referring to?
And what do you mean by B6?

No need to put your car on N during a traffic signal, just enable auto hold, and let your car do the rest. B48 +ZF8 are smartly tuned together to de-couple the transmission doing so and it won't eat away extra fuel. In fact, if you note carefully, the engine rpm idles lower/at a similar level to N when you have enabled auto hold as compared to keeping it on D with the brake depressed. The technology is to make your life easier after all, and that's exactly what it does. There's a lot of information on Google in case you want to read more.

Last thing, don't rev higher than 3k rpm until 2500kms (as suggested by BMW), and floor it all you want post that, just not on a cold start.

if you're ever in Delhi with your car, would love to go for a drive. Happy motoring

Thanks Sid, it is indeed a great car and I am sure you are loving it.

On boot space I think BMW will make me more organised. Previously with Octavia we carry everything on trip and half the things we won’t use. Now we will be more disciplined

Since it’s Bangalore, I really don’t feel the need of ventilated seats, so good with that. Also I like that plain leather look than those perforated in ventilated seats. On rear sunshade, it’s indeed a miss. For now I have put VKool G60 (60% visibility) for sides and F70 (70% visibility) for front. That has really helped cutting off the heat. In my previous cars it’s was 3M CR70 but I find VKool to be better in resisting heat.

Msport Pro comes with Driving Assistant which automatically maintains lane, speed, steering assistance etc. I have set all of them as late to avoid too much of intrusions. Not sure, but it more like level 1 ADAS.
By B6, I meant Bilstein B6 suspension which I had put in Octavia. Personal experience, one among the best dampers available.

Thanks for the suggestion on keeping the transmission in D at the signal. Based on previous feedback and yours I have decided not to fiddle with that more and keep it in D with Auto Hold.

Yes, right now I am patiently waiting to cross 2500 kms, very tempting though. No plans for Delhi as yet, but will surely inform. Likewise please let me know if you plan anything to Bangalore. You have fun with your machine

Aren't heat resistant / tinted films banned by the supreme court? I believe the traffic police in Delhi is very vigilant with that, not sure about Bangalore though. Indeed it's a good option if we can fit in heat resistant / tinted films (definitely not dark films since that's tacky), but I'm not sure if we are legally allowed to do that. Default manufacturer's provided tinted glass is allowed and does come in higher end cars but I don't think BMW provides that with 3 series even in M Sport / Pro.

I have the M Sport, not the M Sport Pro, which was launched this year with the ADAS features, which are a headache except ACC I guess.

I TD the M340i while buying 330Li and I personally preferred the softer suspension of 330Li primarily because of the bad roads in Delhi, I already have to be very careful while driving on bad roads. You have to consider the use case, how much are you really going to do enthusiastic driving versus leasure/comfort driving, plus me being 6'3, it was a no brainer to buy the LWB, otherwise my 7 y.o. niece would have denied to sit behind me in the SWB car

I guess it is in Bangalore too. But all my cars had this 70% visibility one, and since last 12 years (when it was banned) I was not stopped even once for this. Touchwood, hope it goes like that. Also the recent verdict from Kerala HC (read another thread here) where sun films are allowed in Kerala is kind of giving a positive outlook

Okay, so it should be the same function that I am referring to. I guess addition in MSport Pro (other than cosmetics) is only 360 camera, parking assistant plus and Adaptive LED with blue highlights.

Oh, I was torn between 340i and 330Li till last moment. Thing is I wanted good bits from both, the engine and handling from 340i and the space, interiors, panaromic sunroof, ride quality of 330Li . But the mistake I did was, I took my wife and kid for test drive and after that no looking back as they only wanted 330Li . Made my final decision easy.

Luckily there was no other car in contention, did not look at C Class, Audi A4/A6 etc. Always wanted a 3, so that much confusion was less.

@sunikkat: Others have also mentioned but do consider black mirror caps and a black bootlid spoiler. Will really complete the look I feel.

Both are available from BMW at mind boggling prices, but reasonably cheap aftermarket.

Take a look at some drool-worthy Bimmerpost threads:
