We have owned 5 Tata cars and have not faced any issues, neither have anyone I know who own one.
You are right. Every vehicle is susceptible to glitches, it is after all a mechanical device.
The percentage of major breakdowns due to significant component failures is a point open for debate. Yes, "niggles" in Tata and Mahindra products may be a shade more than a corresponding Honda, Toyota or Suzuki but the gap is definitely not as large as it is made out to be.
Apart from Tata, we also have vehicles from Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda and VW-Skoda group in our immediate and extended family.

I would say the reliability of Tata has picked up from the Indica VISTA onwards. We sold it after 10 years and a lakh and a half kilometres - zero breakdowns.
Our 2019 Nexon and Tiago continues to perform without any fuss.
The surprise of the pack is our 2016 NANO GEN-X AMT: zero issues till date despite it having done some really long cross country runs multiple number of times!
Incidentally the most troublesome has been my cousin's VW cars. Electrical failures, gearbox issues, AC performance problems, overheating(cooling system) issues, it is an a la carte menu of car problems!
But he prefers to put up a brave face and not talk about it. It is not fashionable and hurts the ego too much i guess!
