Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Are YOKOHAMA 275/60 R18 GEOLANDAR G015 113H tires good for an upgrade from stock tires? Please share your feedback.

Yes, it looks really dope. They are Maxxis Big Horn 764 - 265/75/R16. I'm told this combo is the best for off roading and has distinct gains.

As Dhanush said, those are pretty popular and widely available. I've something similar in my Gypsy.

If I'm not mistaken, he's already on AVO. I'm keenly waiting for the review too.

Detailed post (Initial Ownership Review & Modifications | 2021 Mahindra Thar) about tire & wheels.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I had an occasion to use my Thar yesterday to take my Dad across some terrible terrain to visit the Dentist through long stretches of broken road and navigating around the enormous amount of metro work and things.

And then later, I had to visit literally the other side of town far off from where I live because a very old friend came visiting.

So the Thar was my automatic choice of chariot for these things.

And it is absolutely true. It instills a huge sense of confidence in one’s own invincibility and invulnerability, when one drives it, sitting high up there and towering over the sea of boring crossovers and autos and quasi SUVs and all. And no surface that the Bangalore authorities can throw at one, fazes the Thar. It just goes through or over anything.

There was a stretch where the metro barrier screens were well into the road and every single vehicular life form had come to an agonising halt and threading their way through the narrow gap.

And the road beyond that choke point was near empty. The other side of the barrier screens was absolutely clear with only the metro pillars on my right. However the road surface in between was heavily pitted, corrugated and broken so much as to be non existent. I took the Thar right through.
For the Thar it was merely like a mild off road trail inside the city. No problem at all, it shrugged its shoulders, gathered up its gumption and breezed through without turning a hair, to the envy of everyone else and this ‘naughty’ maneuvre allowed me to pass and leave behind a long line of choked traffic, at-least 30-35 vehicles and hasten on my way.

While I may be scratching my head on the Jimny thread, there really is NOTHING like the Thar for our Indian conditions.

Even my Dad was saying the same. As long as our authorities dont give us reasonable road surfaces and as long as these cities are perpetually under some kind of construction work, a ‘jeepy thing’ is best suited for our daily use rather than a car.

So clearly its the Thar rather than a car which makes the cut! (The pic is taken in the Urban Jungle.)

True. Yesterday had an opportunity to go to MSPT and spend a day, and the car of my choice to go there is Thar and not my X1. This is the kind of confidence Thar can give. The road was horrible horrible to the core for an industrial area not too far away from Metro. No roads for many streches and no proper road markings and the excuse is that "road widening". But with Thar this is non issue. This thing simply glides over the (non) roads and undulations on offer. Thar 2 door is a perfect vehicle for Indian conditions - mostly no roads, poor roads and slightly better roads. The ride height is a boon. When the road becomes good and Thar 2.2 roars. Full grunt on tap. At 100kmph (still to complete the first service) there is no sign of the diesel clatter or coarseness. Just buttery smooth. Only the rumble stripes unsettled the vehicle. This tall boxy design and engine combo should simply replace all the hatches and wanna be suvs (cretas seltos brezzas) below 20 lakh until the roads get better (will it ever be? I doubt). Until then Thar stays as the car of the choice for commuting (not just the most refined off roader) at least for me.

The Mahindra Thar in White 4x4 really looks classy and purposeful. Really a great colour choice for a jeepy thing along with the galaxy grey and rocky beige.
And its MRF Wanderer AT tyres look excellent. The sipes on the shoulders look purposeful. Dont miss the tiny AT moulded on to the sipes.

Wow the White looks smashing in 4X4 . Just wondering, whether there are any subtle changes in the 4X4 version of white Thar because it looks more dashing in this version. With convertible top that White color will be something else. However, dealers in Mumbai are saying they are yet to get confirmation from Mahindra about availability of White in 4X4.

I've seen a couple of white Thar's on road and they look great contrary to my earlier opinion of them looking like cop jeeps.

The black hard top complements the white body color really well.

I actually rather like the Cop or Forces Jeep look.
A White Gypsy or a Dark Green Gypsy for example, even if owned by a regular Joe Civilian like one of us, lends a certain panache and an indefinable aura of ‘officialdom’ and evokes a certain hesitation on the part of these officious officials manning checkposts and RTO points etc, and they tend to ‘let you pass’ with minimum interference.
If you look the part, even better.
I read long ago in one of those Gavin Lyall books, a comment made by a character who was an Air force officer; “There isn’t a military organization anywhere in the world where a loud enough shout from a high enough rank can’t bypass the security arrangements.”
Frankly for the most part, this is quite true.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Someone I met had a Thar with Ironman shocks installed but unfortunately it was too late and couldn't test drive. But he talked about it highly. Anyone has experience with ironman and aware of it's proper dealer who can support it in Chennai?

I'm ok to try AVO also but it's availability looks like a challenge.

I am wondering since both XUV700 and Scorpio N are coming with FSDs, will Mahindra add FSD to Thar as well making the AVO/ Ironman obsolete. Maybe we existing owners can also upgrade 😄🤞🏻

I've baptized my Thar with few more T BHP stickers. The LTD was put in the first week.

They're yet to get to the root cause.

Did you get it resolved and any more update. Thanks
The screeching sound is still there, especially while applying the brake in slow or medium speeds. Also the same sound is clearly audible while HDC is active. Service guys got no clue and I left as it is, as brake is working well and fine.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Hello guys,

My Thar has just crossed 45K km mark and the stock tires will be due for a change in next 4-5K kms. I wish I could upsize the tires on stock rims, however lack of options and ridiculously high prices of available tires (BFG, Maxxis etc) are making me to think of going with new MRF wanderer AT. Can you guys give me the available options and best sizes to go with if its an upsize?

Why don't you have a look at the new CEAT tyre which is coming as OE.
Forgetting the name some Crossdrive something.
Looks good and purposeful.
