Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Our new Thar LX D AT manufactured in mid Jan 2023 is equipped with the start-stop system. It's a very beta-esque implementation which takes a full 2 second to start and begin moving after it turns off.

Another concern is when the car turns off this way, the oil pressure and battery warning light up in the gauge cluster.

Any thoughts on how to disable this feature fully instead of pressing the button on every crank?

There is a push button near the key insert that needs to be switched off to make this feature stop working. The annoying thing is that you will have to do this every time you turn on the Thar as otherwise it is always on and the Thar will stall whenever you stop.
Yes, eventually managed to figure this out. Extremely annoying but I can live with it I suppose.

But I've got to say my buying experience has been terrible. My DRL's don't work for which they've made me run around and will need another week to fix. The reverse camera is very unresponsive as well and from what I understand this is an issue with all the new Thar automatics. So unless Mahindra comes up with a software update pretty sharpish I'm stuck. Why Mahindra did not think this was an important thing for customers to be informed about while flogging accessories I'm not sure. All this with a car not even a week old.

My left side DRL sometimes gives trouble. And it becomes ok if I switch the vehicle off and on again.
My Thar P AT HT is 2 years old.
The reverse camera was fitted by the accessories chaps before I took delivery and so far has worked perfectly. I ve been happy with my Thar. No niggles per se. I m not sure why this inconsistency across batches.

I think we still have a long way to go to get it right the same way every single time. Sustained long term Predictable and Consistent experience is what we need to achieve.

I am sure you would know this, but there is an option to switch the DRLs on and off in the Infotainment system. You may want to check on that as well just to be sure.

As for the Reverse Camera, it does not tun on automatically sometimes when you engage the reverse gear and you will need to shift it into Drive or Neutral and then shift back to Reverse to switch it on.

I have checked this with the Mahindra Accessories guys and as per them it is an Software issue on all new Mahindra Thars which have the updated info system where the new Mahindra Logo appears upon switching on.

They and Mahindra apparently are aware of the issue and are waiting for a software update to get his rectified.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

After doing some research on this forum and taking some valuable suggestions from fellow BHPians, I went ahead with the following modifications,

1. Seven slot ABS Grill.
2. Wrangler style ABS Bumper.
3. KING Kong 7 inch LED Headlight (12- 24 V).
4. LED bulb for Fog Light ( purchased from local car accessories shop).
5. Fitted ARKA underbody protection guard including protection for DEF tank ( ordered it from ARKA Coimbatore).
6. Black Seat Covers and Steering Wrap (from Auto Form).
7. Lastly I went ahead with Partial PPF (using Ultrashield X) and Ceramic coating by Detailing Mafia.

This was exactly what I was told as well except it came from the Servicing guys out in electronic city. Apparently could take another 3/4 months at a minimum. But really, the accessories team should be selling the reverse camera with a big asterix attached to it until this is fixed.

For me, camera doesn't activate at all in several cases. Best case scenario is that it takes a good 30 seconds or so before activating.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I took my Thar to service station a week back for checking the Right Side DRL issue. The DRL doesn't work occasionally (say one in five start) and comes up when I switch off and on the car. As a first step, the service center updated the firmware and test for sometime. However, the DRL issue is still there. As an added bonus, the reverse camera not working now

Ah, so I am not the only one! This is the only "niggle" I have faced with my Thar till date. The driver side DRL does not come up occasionally (say, 1 in 5 times) after the jeep is started. I reported this in the 1 yr service and they apparently cleaned the coupler but the issue persists. Turning DRLs off and on via infotainment system brings both DRLs up, so I've made this a habit every time I start it Not sure if it is an issue with the LED or something else. Will report it again in next service - not worth visiting ASC for such a minor thing.

Is the bumper from Bimbra?
Those red hooks, they are not really functional from what I have researched hence not suitable for being towed etc.
I was driving my Thar around the lousy HSR speed breaker filled roads today for some local errands.
More than 18 months in and I am absolutely
convinced that the best upgrade I did, was to my suspension. My Thar just glides over all these bad roads and speed breakers. No bobbing, swaying, pitching and skittering about. Makes a big difference for sure.

Thank You so much !

The Bumper is from the company named Redbull, and those red hooks on the bumper are not really functional but can be used in any circumstance if the situation arises.

Regarding suspension I am exploring options for upgrade, though inclined more towards AVO (going to be my last modification).

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

2023 MY Thar comes fitted with CEAT crossdrive A/T tyres. In my opinion these don't look as good as the MRF Wanderers (or CEAT Czar A/T) that was offered earlier. But, I found video from EVO India below claiming CEAT crossdrive offers better balance between on and off road performance. According to the reviewer road noise and driving comfort is better with crossdrive A/T. Can someone who has ridden Thar with these new offering as well as the older offerings confirm to this claims?

This is a promotional video for Ceat Cross Drive. It is clearly called out that it includes paid promotion.

The Ceat Czars which are on my Thar (2021 Feb) are solid tyres made of a strong and hard compound. I have found them very adequate for my use.

Highways, broken roads, trails, mud tracks, stony tracks, rutted estate roads and so on. Upon analysis, my usage is 90% city and highways and 10% actual off-road and even then, it is never serious hard-core mud-roading or rock-crawling, for which of course one needs specialised tyres. So its great for normal users to have these versatile All Terrain Tyres straight from the factory. This was it leaves things open for serious off roaders to get the specialist tyres that they prefer.

Ceat Crossdrive tyres look quite nice, and from my observation of them on several Thars parked around here I would say their tread and lugs have a stronger road-orientation compared with the Czars. And this is probably sensible because from the perspective pf the large majority of Thar owners, their Thars will at the very maximum, see some dirt tracks or rough trails and never serious off road. So to suit the majority, the Crossdrives are likely to be more comfortable and less noisy. Yet, I am sure that they will happily handle all the general rough stuff from our Indian conditions. I would not worry too much, because for example, the humble Maruti Alto itself, on its thin stock factory tyres, buzzes around quite happily all over the high, cold Himalayas and the hot Thar desert regions of India.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

My Nov '22 build went in for its 1000-km checkup last week. Sole complaint was the buggy reversing camera which would start after a long delay, or not start at all in R gear.

They said there is a new software update for it. The reversing camera now works beautifully. No delay at all. Suggest you all plan a quick visit to the dealership for this.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

This rather terrific, iconic and excellently capable vehicle completes 2 full years in my hands today. 20600 odd enjoyable kms done. Plenty of enhancements and upgrades.
A good functional and reliable companion. Always ready for action. Go anywhere at anytime. Here’s to many more years of fun, God and the Governmental Powers-that-are, Permitting.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Folks - about 3 weeks back, I got my Thar D AT HT system updated to version 2.00.05.
Happy to update - the bluetooth connectivity has been 100% successful all the times, every time. No more switching off and on business. The usual Carplay disconnection / connection issue after a few hours of drive, has not shown up post this update.
The reverse camera too has far lesser (only once or twice) blank blue screen post the update.
