Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I don't own a Thar but I've used Philips Xtreme Vision and Multiple versions of this series. The first time you use them you will surely feel that the light output is increased but I find in reality its the color temperature of the bulb that's taking us for a ride and I'm not talking about the white bulbs here.
Yes, there is a marginal increase but nothing extra ordinary.

Other thing is that these bulbs are costly as compared to standard bulbs which we get as stock also these fail much earlier than the stock ones. In last 11 years of my experience with these and stock bulb is that stock ones never failed, never. But I've had at least 5 bulb failures of the Xtreme Vision/Xtreme Vision Plus etc.
So eventually I got back to stock bulbs for the headlights.

I do use 55w 4200k Fog lamp projectors with Hi/Low beams strictly for the highways and those are also running without any issues since 2017.

Just wanted to share my experience, hope this helps.

I got my Thar P MT HT Grey 10days ago. Its my only car and i plan to keep it like that. Will try my best to give you guys an honest review as there is very little info on the manual petrol version of the Thar online. I have done only 1000kms so far and just got my complimentary service done today.
Congratulations on getting the beast, I am sure you will be loving the feel already, with all those looks and gazes.

I just had a request, can you please post more pics of your interior mods like hand rests and footwell padding, because a friend of mine is looking for the same for his thar. Also are you satisfied with the mods.

Cheers

Hi W16rocks,
Here are some pics. Hope they help.
I'm actually super happy with most mods. While the arm rests are functionally great and very useful, I wish the top cushion parts looked better. They feel perfectly fine (rubber like) and look pretty OEM but I'm planning on getting the top cushions wrapped in the Napa tan colour like my seat covers for aesthetic reasons only. Only mod I'm not completely satisfied with are the foot mats. They're a bit slippery. There is a bit of movement. Nothing major but would have liked for it to be perfectly in place and move even a bit. Not changing anything right now. Will just use it for a bit.

Hey! Thanks a lot. Good to know.
Can you give me more details on the fog lamps? Which brand? Does it need tampering with the original wiring?
Any idea if this will fit the thar? I definitely want to get projector fog lamps.
Also if you could share a pic?

Hi, as I already mentioned I don't own a Thar but I've seen similar projectors on Thars as well so it will fit.
About the brand I believe there are many options available now, please check with your local car accessory shop or someone like Bimbra 4x4.
I got mine from Aliexpress back in 2017 and installed them my self.

If you get these just ask the installer to use proper couplers for the job and do not cut any wires.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Guys, I have the Philips Xtremevision Gforce bulbs installed in my Swift, and in past 2 years I have done at least 8 long drives starting after mid-night. Also, I frequently travel at night in Delhi NCR region highways and expressways. I have uploaded few dashcam video clips in YouTube, you can refer to those to understand the performance. The dashcam exposure remains higher in dark. However you can understand the lighting to some extent.

Why I mention the statistics is to understand the life of the bulbs (high performance bulbs have shorter life).

I am not a Thar owner. While going through the recent posts on this bulb, I thought it might be helpful if I provide the video clips here.

2. In fog:

Hi Shankar.Balan - thanks for the advise on headlights, could you pls let know what is your input on Projector Fogs? I plan to change it sometime next week!

I'd say this is light fog, brother.
When you drive in Himachal and Punjab at 2 AM in the winters with retreating monsoons, true fog sets in. Visibility may come down to 1m beyond the bumper, and in patches, the bug deflector on the bumper itself!

Now for fogs and foglights, what I have learned through experience and an (one) accident, is that when you have no one on a highway for 30 minutes when you're driving (Chandigarh to Ludhiana was nasty ~ 8 years back - not much has changed) with no co-pilot, you'd rather not. True fog is for the dumb or desperate (I've been both.)

The last thing I've learned is that, its not the color, but more importantly, the level of the lights. The projector fogs play their part with the NEAT low cut-off.

I also have a Bushranger LED bar as well slightly below the headlights now, but positioning them just half a foot higher than their original location (bumper height) has made a world of a difference - they're now useless in the fog

Don't blame white. Yellow will not make fog super transparent. Fog reflects all light. Blame LEDs with poor beam patterns, not the white light! And 100w halogens with blue-tints just reduce total visible light to that of a 60W yellow halogen. 60W yellow tint halogens too don't miraculously beat 60W regular no-tint halogens.

These are my science-backed (breaking bad!) positions, mixed in with experience. I have been using philips rally since before they were made in China with now about ~ 1.8L kms driven in a few different cars.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Yesterday went to Mahindra’s Great escape event 2022 here in Hyderabad.

Lovely turnout, maybe more than 40 Thars.
It was raining crazy all through the day. Had good splash. Though trail was easy for a Thar.

At the end Great day spent. Looking forward to more events like these👍

Hi -

Use auto form foot mats they are bit expensive but great use, won’t slip & good quality! I been using it since last few week though.. for my Honda city, I have the 3M (popularly called as noodle mats) they are too good.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Got the Steering wrapped. The look and feel is amazing. Almost looks OEM. Costed 2500
I felt the original steering was very slippery but this has made it amazing to hold.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Is there merit in underbody anti corrosion treatment??? For those who have used Thar off-road or in wet weather a lot without it, have you seen rusting/corrosion starting to happen?

If you offroad across rocky terrain, and do not have an underbody shield yet, check this post and the one linked within it.

If you go offroad, better have a good underbody protection - I had rusting (nothing major though) under the body coz of the stone hits in the early days (when good underbody shields weren't available) and had to do an underbody coating!

Where did you get this done?
I'm making do with the 300 buck one that one gets from M2All with 350 bucks for installation at MAs$ (svc.).
