Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

What is the update on expected delivery dates for all?
Mine is a October 6th booking for a Red Diesel Manual Hardtop LX variant...last week it was 12 Dec & as on today 27 Oct 20 it has shifted 14 Dec 20.
Don’t know who are getting theirs in the month of November. Is any one here who has a November delivery date?

Couldn't agree more @BlackPearl.

I have come across quite a few video reviews, even from mainstream media outlets, that rubbish the earlier Thar just so that they can paint a glowing picture of the new one. I can see why they need to grovel so much while reviewing a new product (and none of that has anything to do with the end consumer) but a little bit of objectivity never hurt anyone.

It's a no-brainer that a refreshed version will have more features and more advantages than an earlier model, so the 2020 Thar deserves better than to be eulogised on the exaggerated drawbacks of the former.

And a vehicle that till a few months back was sold as a perfectly legit road-worthy machine with massive appeal, albeit as a niche offering, cannot overnight become a good-for-nothing piece of trash with absolutely no redeeming features, and made the butt of jokes.

Whether in terms of mechanicals, features, ride quality, handling or any other aspect, the earlier Thar is in no way as pathetic as is being made out. Perhaps some of these folks need to drive a truly bare-bones, non power-steering, all solid-axle & leaf spring, only drum brakes, no-doors, bad ergonomics version of the earlier jeeps to really appreciate what has been done with the first-gen Thar. And if you still need car-like comfort, you're clearly comparing apples to oranges.

Besides, it's also representative of non-pluralistic mindsets that seem to be flourishing these days. Not everyone wants the latest shiny object, some might in fact actively desire something more classic and traditional. Does that make it a bad product?

Finally, here's the clincher. The 2020 Thar has been the most eagerly awaited automobile launch in recent times. Would it have been that if not for the charisma of the earlier Thar?

I rest my case.

Can you guide where exactly one can see this information? Is it provided by the SA? Reason being, made my reservation on 18th on Mahindra portal. Apart from the confirmation email, haven't received any sort of communication later or can see any further information on the portal. Curios to know.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Thar is one product that pulls the heart strings. With Thar 2.0 and interiors comparable to other SUV's/ hatches, it is a no brainer that it got so many bookings. If I am a manufacturer with no real competition, I have the leeway to schedule my production for 100% utilization. For an expected niche product Mahindra doing 3000 units/ month is pretty commendable. Sure bookings are high but they will taper down. The interest in Hyderabad is almost negligible now as all those interested have either booked or are waiting for V2.

So these 15,000 odd bookings might turn to 30,000 odd bookings once they open Pan India. Subsequently it may settle at 1000-1500 units a month.

By then new Scorpio should be in the market sharing the Production line with Thar. I would say Mahindra has done a decent job given the Covid scenario in a niche segment.

There were quite a few bookings done in the initial days. Then there are unofficial booking taken by dealers. Anyway you got an early date. From what I heard, there are people who booked in the first hour being quoted 3 months or more waiting.

Again it is all Variant and color dependent. Which batch moves how will be seen only based on how the production is scheduled. Even the supply chain has to get aligned.

You can call the dealership directly. From what I have seen only after they have received the booking amount into their accounts are they considering it booked.

But for online bookings, how Mahindra is handling that is not yet clear. So I chose to visit the dealership and close it rather than book. I am going to VVC Kondapur dealership today for test drive. I will check and update you on this.

Interesting observations. Some of these can be done. I like the clock idea. I will surely look to implement in mine

Should be feasible outside without much hassle.

Booking date 2nd Oct, time 1:16 pm (16 minutes after the bookings were made open), Variant : LX AT HT. Expected delivery date : 5th Jan (earlier date was 13th). I have asked customer care and the dealer to confirm the make year. No way I am accepting a 2020 made car in 21.

Not too fussed about the delay/ delivery schedule as I haven’t decided if I really want to buy the Thar.

Getting mine in the first week of November in the first delivery. I keep getting messages from MAHINDRA ( SMS's I mean ) with the latest one from yesterday saying CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING AN EPIC CHOICE- etc

I plonked in a small deposit before the official booking date however my acknowledgement of the deposit was only made on 2nd oct hence I was perhaps one of the first ones to actually book. Hence should be the first ones to get it as well.

I am informed all dealers will get there deliveries around the same day and the first deliveries PAN INDIA will be made on the same day. That will be quite an interesting statistic as to how many cars they handover on Day - 1. Of course the dealers are unaware of what model / color they will be getting as most dealers have the same BLACK AT HT DIESEL LX bookings in the max.

I am absolutely looking forward to getting my hands on one of the first ones.

I remember I was also one of the first buyers of the Innova Crysta when it launched and boy the amount of eyeballs it grabbed back then. I am expecting the same here and some more

I will keep you guys updated.

You have to ask your dealer/Sales supervisor. They have to check it for you in their internal system. As a customer we don't have any direct access to this info.

A page or two back another member has enumerated this Mahindra internal system in detail.

I booked it on Oct 2nd at 11AM (Diesel LX HT AT Rocky beige) and the promised delivery date according to M&M is Dec 12th. This info was provided only after I made multiple calls to the dealer (here in Bangalore) and then tweeted, emailed to M&M support team.
So even I am curious who exactly is getting all the vehicles in November.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

The waiting period for such heart influenced buy is really killing me. I have run out of Youtube videos now. Also, completely agree with the Bhpians observations on the relevance of reviews by big houses now. Understand that Thar 2020 is leaps ahead but many channels and reviewers have literally become PR agency for Mahindra now.

Time has gone for objective reviews, it's all about being the loudest most creative commercial in the name of a review.

As far as delivery and TD is concerned, i was checking with my dealer about a longer TD and he said may be around a month later they will try to give one. Also, TD of an automatic might only be available in 2 months. Crazy timelines for a lifestyle vehicle.

For now I wait for 17th March 2021, the promised delivery date for mine. Wish that drops down considerably.

Just curious.

Why wouldn't you accept a car that's manufactured in 2020 and delivered in 2021?

You haven't decided if you really want to buy the Thar but booked it 16 minutes after the bookings were made open?

Even the TBHP review called out the obvious red flags and suggests people wait it out and see if the niggles are addressed.

The reason for this might be lower re-sale value because manufacturing year is important when the car needs to be sold after a few years and not the initial niggles I suppose.

Cheers.

And yet, people flock dealerships to get their cars delivered on Dusshera and Diwali when they can just wait a month or two and get next model year. This is usually the busiest time for them (at least in Maharashtra).
Tata and Hyundai showrooms were bursting at seams with people earlier this month, most of them targeting auspicious days in Oct and Nov.
Also is it the manufacturing date or the registration date that matters for resale? Either way, I don't understand this phenomenon
