Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

So, took the delivery today and drove for around 50kms.

Loved the drive, there is ample power available. One thing, petrol is not super-silent, I expected more.

Need help/clarifications on the following:

- gearshift from 2nd to 3rd is not that smooth, is it normal?

- there is some fan/motor noise audible from the outside at idle, not too much noise though. I was told by the mechanic that it is due to some BS 6 addition, is he correct?

- bonnet and other parts was hot to touch even after an hour of switching off the engine. Is it due to no insulation?

- there is some burning smell at the outside once the engine is shut down.

Would be great if the fellow owners can share their insights.

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

My stock Radiator protector took many hits during off-roading. One of the bolts in chassis also got a bend during the same and it was time to get a good under body protection.
Hence got the 3-piece underbody protection from ARKA which covers oil pan, transmission, transfer case and front exhaust.
Also got a separate protection for DEF tank.
Everything is made of aircraft grade aluminium alloy.
Please excuse for quality of the pics

MT? please check if the carpet installed is interfering with the clutch pedal, it has happened with some of our cars when they were new.

Recently an Ertiga was not starting intermittently, after trouble shooting it was discovered that the 700D mat that got installed was not letting the clutch pedal go down properly.

Can you please share the price information of the 3-piece underbody protection?
Also any intel on the separate protection for DEF tank will help.

Thanks.

31k for the three piece protection.
I wanted to cover as much underbody as possible. Not sure if the insurance companies will honor the damage on underbody components in the event of an offroading. Hence opted for DEF protection too.

Is the DEF thingy also from Arka and is included in the 31k you paid? If not, how much did you pay for it? And is it also aluminum?

How easy was the installation process - is it a simple bolt-on installation or does it require any sort of drilling?

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

I'm planning to book my Thar in 2022. I am however keen on 2 items - a White colored Thar from Mahindra itself (don't want to get in trouble with the RTO for changing the colour post delivery) and a convertible HARD top. There were pics online of test mules with these 2 features a few months back. Has there been any news if these will come anytime soon?

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

Few of the owners including me are facing an issue where the front tyre is rubbing against stabilizer bar when steered completely to either side due to which excessive tyre wear out is observed.
There was a case where dealer had to replace both tires due to complaint.
In my case, tyre is good as of now and it occurs only on left side. I shall be taking to service center soon.
Request fellow owners to check out the same.

What material was used for bonnet hood insulation? Is that OEM or something else? Just curious and one of my car doesn't have bonnet hood insulated. Thanks!

Nice mods you got there! I also wanted to have grab handles installed but am skeptical on drilling holes on A-Pillar.

Did you do whole damping including the door and floor, or just the speaker areas?
Can you please share the details on reverse parking bulbs?
Lastly, what's the use of number plate relocator?
TIA

Re: Mahindra Thar : Official Review

To all tyre experts here,
I am looking to upgrade tyre and wheels of my thar Petrol auto. Currently it has stock tyres(255/65/r18 MRF Wanderer AT, 10 inch width, 6.5 inch sidewall) with stock alloy wheels. The stock tyre stands at 31.1 inch. I read online that for off-road vehicles the wheel size should be nearly 50%(could be more as well) of the total tyre height and they looked really impressive to me as well in the pics that i found. So, I am planning on going with 16 inch wheel(still confused between steel vs alloy) with 31 -32 inch tyres. My driving would be confined to 40 percent highways, 40 percent city roads(aka Gurgaon, roads are not that good here) and remaining for off-roading purposes. I have listed down 2 sizes that fit my requirement.
1. 275/70/r16 ->The width is increased by 0.8 inches and the side wall is increased by 1.1 inch, negligible change in circumference and diameter.
2. 265/75/r16 -> The width is increased by 0.4 inches and the side wall is increased by 1.3 inches.

I am only looking for AT tyres. I have the following questions:
1. Which size should i go for?
2. And also which tyre brand should i go for? Yokohama Geo, Michelin LTX force, BFG KO2, Maxis MA 751 or something else?
3. Should i go for steel rims or alloys? If alloys then where can i get good quality off-road alloys in India?

Thanks

I was shifting it at higher speeds of 30-40 kmph, looks like i wasn't suppose to do that. Even the technicians at Mahindra suggested the same to me.
Thanks
