Re: Volkswagen Polo 1.0L TSI : Official Review

Polo appreciation post:

The rant:
As most of T-BHPians based out of Mumbai / Pune must have read / seen on social media. Last weekend was a terror for travel between Mumbai and Pune with the E-Way ghat section reminding us of overcrowded Dadar station when the trains are late.

It was complete mismanagement on the police part too - maybe they were overwhelmed with the sheer volume of vehciles they were seeing (at ungodly hours too) but the fact that police were not on ground to mitigate the issues just did not help.

The worry:
I saw a lot of cars with their bonnets open and a lot of people waiting for the car engine temperatures to go down a little just so they could drive. Cars were put to some extreme test left, right and centre and many of them just could not deliver. The car mix had old and new cars both which means not only people take car servicing lightly, newer cars dont have the rugged engines of previous years.

The appreciation:
Well, this gets me to the appreciation of the Flanker (Polo GT TSi 1.0). Was driving from Vasai to Pune which took me about 8.5 hours thanks to the traffic jam. Looking at the cars getting stranded, i moved the MID to show the coolant reservoir temperature so that i dont end up screwing my engine but all through the drive, the Flanker did not disappoint. Not only did the engine make sure it delivers, the seat too made sure am not stretching myself after the drive. There is just something about this car that makes sure you fall in love with it again. The fact that a decade old platform is doing well when the newer cars are failing is a testament to VW's unwavering commitment to building great cars.

Note to mods: I am not sure if this is the correct thread. Please feel free to move to another thread / remove altogether as you see fit.

hi bro, after reading around i've decide to go for same brembo+ultimax2 setup as you. unfortunately not able to figure out viraat 's id. could you please share/dm so i may dm.contact him.

Thank you.

Edit: also could you kindly confirm the parts nos. for the brembo vented and ebc ultimax2. my search for the ebc ultimax2 shows up as DP1329 but it also says Type1 on motrparts so i'm confused as it seems here we re supposed to use Type2.

Re: Volkswagen Polo 1.0L TSI : Official Review

2 years Polo update.

Has been a largely hassle free period except the troubles we have caused ourselves....ie: small bumps and scratches

The Polo has been primarily my wife's city runabout car and has been doing well in that respect. The dog gets transported in it too but he does not like the rear windows that don't go all the way down.

Recently did a Pune- Lonavala expressway run. Traffic was light and I used the cruise control between 80-100 all the way. Got almost 20km/l milage both ways which was amazing!

Small annoying problem: 2 of the AC vent adjusters have come off. Felt like they have clipped off and I would be able to put them back, but I cant seem to be able to re attach them.

Anyone else had this issue?

Had the same issue in my two year old polo. Got replacements from Boodmo and got them fitted in an FNG and saved a few bucks. VW service centre were quoting 1500 rupees over what I paid.

Yes, Both the Left and Right side AC vent adjusters have clipped off from my polo. The service advisor says we have to replace the entire unit.

By left pull, do you mean the car doesn't drive straight when the steering logo is centered? Or when you let go of the steering completely, does the steering rotate to the left?

Any wobbles when braking?
Is the rear suspension alright? All the suspension bushings?

This exact problem started occuring on my Tata Altroz after around 2 years of purchase and 28k on the odo. I tried most of the steps you tried out. When I asked the tata service people about it, they told me the reason to be the transmission mounted on the left side and because of its weight, the vehicle veers to the left. I am not logically convinced since this started to occur almost after 2 years and till then there was no issue.

But in my case, the pull only occurs at speeds above 100kmph and its not that significantly high. So I don't mind it cause at those speeds, no sane person will be taking the hands off the steering.

Apart from alignment, I had the suspension checked by ASS and FNG. All came back saying the suspension is clean.
The car was due for a tyre change and I changed all 4 to Conti. Still no luck. The problem persists with the new tyres too.
Can you share which FNG you went to? Ideally they should check the lower suspension arms, link rods and bushes properly if the car is pulling to a side shortly after alignment.

When I let go the steering, the steering rotates to the left and the vehicle steers to the left.
There are no wobbles during braking. The rear suspension bush was replaced couple of weeks back and no luck with that.

In my case the problem is very evident even in speeds of 60 kmph.

I had been to car crew in OMR. Technician ruled out any issues with the suspension. If you have suggestions of any specific FNG which I should visit, I would be happy to get it checked from there.

Based on the inputs from ais and Ankit, I visited the SC again and asked them to inspect the steering rack, suspension mounts and bushes specifically. They replaced the rear suspension bush, corrected the alignment again. After 500 km drive, the problem resurfaced. Sigh!!

Can the rear axle bush be a concern here? Should I get that checked?
Thanks again for all your valuable time and inputs.

Since you're in OMR, give a visit to 'Ignite the Garage' in ECR for a second opinion. Another option for VAG specific vehicles is German Tech in Kodungaiyur/Vyasarpadi. Both of these are frequented by T-BHPians.

Just give a call/book an appointment before going to these places since they're are usually full.

I have the same problem in my less than 2 year old Polo GT TSI. Two of the vent clips have come off / broken. I knew from Team-BHP threads about these being flimsy and was careful but still two of them came off in the last two months. Can you tell me what the part numbers are in Boodmo?

I only had to replace the central air vents and I picked the first one because it was cheaper, even though the stock one had silver padding. Also, check with your service centre for parts + labour cost and compare it with boodmo price + FNG labour cost in your area.

AFAIK rear bush should not be contributing to left pull but I might be wrong. Get it checked since your issue is not yet resolved.

I however got into a very comic yet small issue which was self imposed.

Usually we do not pay attention to the air filled in the tyres at petrol pumps. Now the background is that I have Sensiary TPMS installed and some 4000 Kms back did the regular WAB + Rotation of wheels.

I had to also label the sensors on the app accordingly. Now fast forward to last week when I was just checking the air pressure and topping it up using my portable inflator at home. The app was open in the car ICE via android auto.

After filling the air I noticed the car was going left all the time. This week during my fuel fill trip I got the air filled again as I felt maybe the portable inflator had given up. It is a 3 years old machine now.

When I checked the same evening, air pressure was again uneven and the car was pulling left.

Realizing that there is an alignment issue I gave another last shot to the tyres as the air pressure reported by TPMS also had some discrepancy. I was thinking that maybe the TPMS sensor has given up too.

So today I filled 40 PSI in all the tyres when cold and started re-identifying the sensors. To my disbelief the sensor mapping was at fault. What I was assuming as FR was RR and more. I realized that due to this I had only filled up wrong air pressure looking at the ICE screen which displays wheels based on label and not actual positions. That means FR and FL shown in the ICE is not necessarily FR and FL.

It is then that I also realized that one of the valve was partially at fault as the pressure it was releasing when I was leveling the air by manually pressing the valve was very low. Similar thing happened while filling that particular tyre.

So I would say get the air pressure checked from a different device (not the petrol pumps), probably if you / some friend has a handheld air pressure tester and then level the air pressure. It might be because of this issue that you might be facing the left pull.
