It has been a while since I have posted reviews on this forum, and I was thinking about it for a while now before I finally got time today to pen down my long term experience with the TATA ALTROZ XZ 1.2 NA PETROL MANUAL 2022 model. The car has completed 27k in 2 years and we have completed a lot of long and short trips with this car till now.
This is basically owned by my brother but since this car is a part of the family hence some times occasionally I use it aswell. I own a SONET for which I will write a separate post. The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear a 3 cylinder engine is under powered and infact that is what it is for such a aggressive looking hatchback, and it is not like the 3 cylinder does wonders in terms of fuel efficiency the best it does is 18kmpl on highways and in cities 15kmpl to 16kmpl. My honest opinion will be that TATA should have kept a competitive 4 cylinder engine in the Altroz for it to compete with its rivals like the i20 and the Polo and keep the 3 cylinder for the likes of Tiago. Currently Altroz is out of their league in terms of performance to an i20 or a Polo. But nevertheless that is my opinion and someone else will have a different take on this.
Initial pickup is good but then when you reach 3 digits you literally feel the car is under powered and cannot be pushed further however the pickup is adequate for city drives. The car is planted and is very stable at 3 digits and you can literally tell behind the wheel that it can take more of that centrifugal on the curves and the g force on the straights as per the build and stability of the car, it's a shame that the engine does not support it.
Interior of the car is as classy as the exterior for the Altroz the Harman system does justice to the car. The interior ambient lighting auto headlamps and auto rain sensing wipers this car has everything you feel sometimes. The cabin is spacious and you feel like you are in a mid size sedan with legroom in front and back. Ample headroom on the front seats but you feel a bit less headroom at the back. Seats are comfortable both front and back I did not feel any fatigue on 4 hours straight drives with this car. The suspension of this car is fantastic, I really like the way how this car behaves on Indian potholes and how smoothly it handles them. The door closing thud is rich and you feel like you are closing a door of a luxury car. Cabin is quite when the door is closed, so a really good job done by TATA engineers on the noise cancellation part. Braking is good and the ABS in this car does a fantastic job on high speed braking you will never feel the car is out of control or sliding. Steering is a bit heavy on low speeds this could have been better, but on high speeds the steering is stable and accurately responsive. The build quality can be seen in the A pillar of the car wherein it is so broad that it literally blinds you when taking a right turn
There has been a few quality issues like the rear camera went out a few months back and it was the fuse sensor which was an issue similarly the dipper of this car has gone out recently and I am assuming it is the fuse box issue again because both dippers are out. So the thing that you hear about TATA quality issue online mostly is true story. They are making fantastic cars but huge issues with their quality and service. You need to spend hours and hours for small fixes at the service centre because their service centers are overwhelmed with cars. You can see the lack of planning at the backend and TATA needs to work on them quickly before they start losing market share. Because people like their design and purchase the car but if the services have a bottleneck then eventually people will be disappointed and turn their ways to their competitors. And it is not like their quality testing team is giving them any relief as you see more and more faulty parts in a lot of New TATA cars which burdens their service centers.
Lastly it has been a fantastic experience with the Altroz, my brother normally uses it for office commute, the only disappointment for him is he now he regrets a manual given the traffic in Mumbai. He said he would prefer an automatic gearbox over a manual just because of the traffic but then auto comes with lesser efficiency and given the service and quality issue of TATA, auto gearbox can be a nightmare if it is a lemon. Lastly some pictures of the Altroz that we own taken recently.
