Re: Jeep Compass : Official Review

An ownership review of the Petrol DCT Compass.

One can see the reasons behind picking the somewhat criticised petrol over the diesel engined variant, as well as picking the compass over a cheaper and more feature laden korean. Should be mentioned he is driving the entry-level Sports variant which is said to now be discontinued.

Sure @timuseravan.
Here are my observations on the Jeep brand magnetic Sun Screens.

My first choice was 3M sun block film, which is now not “legal”. [As per the friendly 3M guy, no film is legal, irrespective of the transparency. This is based on the cases, where owners reported back to shop to get it removed, after the local cops did a check / fine.] That’s that, so moved on to the screens.

The Jeep Screens are well made, as in, neat stiches and good strong magnets all along the border.
Blocks a good amount of the hot rays. Definitely made a difference in the cooling during the summer heat.

They have large “J E E P” text on the screens. I preferred it to be a little more subtle, so have interchanged the Left and Right screens. So, the writing shows on the inside and not too visible. [My pics attached show them prominently as I used flash in the pics. Else with the outside generally brighter, the text is much more subdued inside and outside.]

The Magnets. Very good and latch on to the metal frame well. BUT, problem is, on every window there is metal frame only on two borders, close to the border of our Sun Screen.
See image of Front door. Magnet can latch on to the top and the right side. Bottom and left side are free. Bottom kind of rests on the plastic. Given the size of the screen – this fitting keeps the screen in place.
In the Rear door however, things are a little tacky. As in the image, the screen latches onto the top and Left sides of the metal frame. Bottom and right side are not metal. And this screen is larger and heavier than the front screen. This results in the screen leaving a gap as marked in the image, more often than not. Now, is this affecting the sun block efficiency? No. And they do not slip off even on very rough roads. Just a problem with an OCD owner.

I went to the Jeep show room to buy these shades. Fixed them. Saw this gap and pulled them off. Gave gyaan to the poor sales lady and left without buying. The I went to another showroom. Saw that, that is how they all are, that gap. Left, disappointed. Then there was this long drive with the family. And on an impulse went over to the first showroom, tasted humble pie and bought these. They turned out to be perfect for the use in mind. Ignoring the fitment issues. Happy with the purchase.

Man! that is some increase in price, we got the Jeep Compass Sport Petrol Manual in Jan 2020 for 15.8L on road. Now the price for the same car with an update in the interiors is 22.3L on road. This is like 6.5L difference on road in 2 years!

And I got an i20 top model in 2011 for 6.3L. Prices have gone up especially after the during the COVID era. It’s time we accept it and move on. Also, the price list attached is from Kerala so the taxes are significantly higher than in Meerut.

Inflation has been huge during the past two years. Even something as simple as an Activa saw the prices jump from the 70k range to the 90k range.

That said - the Sport variant saw a huge jump in quality and interior feel post the facelift - frankly it's tough to even compare the two - the current Sport is more comparable to the old Longitude(o).

For example, these were some pictures I posted in the initial pages of this thread, after checking out the Sport variant post launch -

And post the face lift, this is the new Sport -

To me at least, the car looked and felt drastically different in person. Features are less compared to the top-end variants of crossovers from the lower segment, but the quality difference is as evident as night and day. And I hear the sales for the Sport really picked up post the facelift - may be that's the reason Jeep wants to discontinue it.

Came across this video on stability of cars( The Moose Test) Pleasantly surprised by Jeep Compass results. Though this is an European car.

This video makes me coming back to Compass. The car is heavy and well built. Every review of Compass raves about the stable ride quality. I feel a brand like Jeep would maintain the same build quality across markets. After all they are pricing and marketing the car as an entry level luxury product.

And one question to the owners. Sometime while driving, I suddenly get a "alert sound" and warning message on dashboard screen - "Start/stop not ready. Seatbelt unbuckled". The message then immediately goes away. I noticed this is more in ghat sections. There is no problem in driving or anything else. Has anyone else faced this problem? I suspect some issue with seatbelt sensor.
Yes i noted this issue while travelling to Goa via Belgavi. It doesn't affect anything but we get this strange alarm sound unnecessarily, not sure what to do

Re: Jeep Compass : Official Review

Any idea what is the purpose of this "Drive in 1st gear below 8 km/h" message?

Comes at slow speeds without much logic or reason, as far as I could figure out. Many a times - I was exactly in first gear and some times above 10-15km/h as well.

Generally, the stress on transmission/driveshaft is more in lower gears, that is the reason some cars have torque limiter maps for gears 1 & 2. (The FCA group cars powered by MJDs had it and that is the reason they were slow in those gears when compared to other cars with same engine)

The car generally stalls if you are in the second gear below 8 KMPH. The service advisor also told me to avoid the same while handing over the car. Since I had only used petrol cars before this had to get used to this as well

Thanks for this video. I bought my compass in 2018 and because the COVID pandemic the car has been idle for most part of the last two years.

Today we drove to my in-laws place some 50km away and I enjoyed every bit of the drive. I have owned some of the best handling cars in the past (palio S10, civic, ecosport), but the compass is in a different league altogether when it comes to driving pleasure.

Waiting eagerly for the drive back home.

I had booked MG ZS EV 2022 in Jan and I was today informed that it might be delivered in Aug/Sep. Not happy and planning to look at Compass as SA promised to deliver this beauty in 6 weeks.

Does this message come with any beep/alert sound? I have never seen this message. Maybe this is specific to BS6 version.

There is no beep. Comes up randomly, more like a reminder than a warning.

On a related note, is it a characteristic of the MJD engine to stall very easily in the second gear? Doesn't happen to me now as I have gotten used to the engine and gear box. But coming from petrols and other diesels like XUV 500 and Creta this was surprising to me initially. Is it a Compass thing or happens in other MJD vehicles as well like Harrier and Hector?
