I own a Hyundai Getz facelift version & in almost every parameter be it tactility, steering feedback, space or power it beats a manual petrol Polo evidently. The Getz has a kerb weight of 1066 kg while the Polo petrol is about 1020 kg for a body that's about 4 inches longer. Hyundai has an army of designers from Germany, France, Italy (for exteriors+structural engineering) & America for interiors. They are no less than any luxury car manufacturer with heads of design from BMW/Audi currently working for them as also drive-tune specialists recruited from BMW M division and Lotus. In short they are in a hurry to shed whatever misconceptions people have about their expertise in building a machine & they are increasingly getting noticed as the latest i10 and i20 have already received many awards in Europe.

Now for the other side of the story, India as a market hasn't evolved in terms of preferences in the automobile sector. About 70+% of them are concerned about the size/value they are getting for the money spent, i.e they consider visual heft as value, then there are about 25% concerned with maintenance costs, resale & fuel economy due to which they buy popular brands. This leaves about 5% people who look closer into aspects like build quality, driving dynamics and fit & finish. Every car company in India makes cars inferior to the same models abroad, this is either due to making cost cheaper or to cut down weight or to increase profitability. VW while their structural engineering is good, they started off here offering absolutely models with zero features, only now they have learnt their lesson & they are giving better value. Hyundai too similarly are no doubt shedding safety features/stronger panels/dynamics to enable better pricing for the buyers. The i20 made in India for example cannot be exported to Australia due to lack of 6 airbags & other benchmarks, while the i20 made in Turkey has been deemed more than fit.

...................................

To end a long post, the reason why I wrote all of the above isn't to blame/praise any brand, each have their own issues/advantages. Its just that the build quality/fun-to-drive aspect of any model depends more on the price-range or country they're built in, rather than the brand name- the scenario has changed. The CEO of VW Martin Winterkorn himself was stunned when he sat in a Hyundai i30 in an auto-show, under distress he scolded his fellow engineers saying "our steering adjust lever rattles, why doesn't theirs?" This doesn't mean of course that we'd get the same spec i30 in India, if at all.
Hi dark.knight,

You made a very good post, made for good reading. Thanks! And I agree with your view. My friend (who I mentioned I will go with, for the TD) encouraged me to check out i20 as he said Hyundai have been 'upping their game, globally' and I guess that is evident from initial test drives, user reports, etc. Btw, my first car booked in my life, was a Getz (petrol). For some reasons (back in 2008), I had to cancel it. Was a lovely vehicle.

So, from what you're saying, Hyundai is armed with the right people and they have a well planned road for continued success. They also seem to be making improvements with various iterations, all pointing to a good future for them. All very encouraging too, for prospective buyers looking at Hyundai.

Also, personally I think at least 50% of indian vehicle buyers always look at re-sale value/re-sale sentiments before purchasing a vehicle. 25% is way too less..

Pssst, Dont tell anyone. I got my Elite i20 Crdi Sports(O) after a booking period of 1 WEEK. I am from kerala. This is the main reason I changed my mind for elite i20. First I thought of taking the Honda Amaze. But now I realized my decision was ultra good
1 week is a steal. Lucky you. And lucky you again as you got spared by the Honda Amaze (no offense to the owners of that car).

Hi Ajay, The car performs very well at those speeds. No hint of wobble or light steering at all. I'd go ahead and say at those speeds, it feels more planted than my OHC.

One interesting thing that many people do not know is that recently Suzuki had to shut shop in the US, yes, thats right, Suzuki has stopped or will soon be shutting down in the US and winding their operations except for maintenance and servicing.

I think the primary difference here is that many companies which we are comparing here such as VW/Fiat are not individually owned since the past many years, where as on the other hand, Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota etc still remain to be firmly in control of their founding families.

The owners drive for what he likes gets imbibed through out the organization. Also in India, price is a very very sensitive subject. VW/Fiat etc make money after they sell the vehicle thereby making cost of ownership very high over the life of the purchased vehicle also they have a very sparse dealer network with availability of spares always being an issue.

On the other hand, organizations such as Hyundai/Toyota/Suzuki are providing a really cost effective service to many developing countries.

The overall economic scenario in EU/US and other countries(India, Indonesia, Malaysia) is also very different, so we cannot really compare why manufacturers are not bringing their global models to India or why are they trimming down their offerings while getting the vehicle to India.

Personally, I like the vision that these companies have(Toyota/Hyundai/Honda)

Just my two cents.

Thanks!

Hey, i did the first service. They charged me rs. 1000 for engine coating. They explained it is some rubberized coating for preventing sensor failure etc. The whole engine bay is now glossy after the coating. Is it useful?

In the bill, they have mentioned it as NPNCOAT as part number and ENGINE COATING as part description.

Also the coating cost is just Rs. 393 and they charged Rs. 490 as some "outside job-others" cost. I am confused

Please call Hyundai on the toll-free number and 'do tell them' that this specific item was pushed inside your jobsheet under the pretext of being an *important* aspect of first service.

Please ask for refund as this procedure is not mandatory and isn't useful either. Please do not let this go. Imagine the amount these guys earn just by adding 300-400 rupees items for thousands of cars they have sold as dealers. Hope this helps

At best, I would assume that such a coating would be to make the engine bay more cleaner and probably make it a coated surface, to which grime and dirt cannot stick to, easily (or it makes washing them off much easier).

That the engine coating is to prevent sensor failure is absolute gas and a giveaway that they were BS-ing. I have heard of engine lacquer coating (if I remember right, by 3M or the likes) and that is clearly just a cosmetic coating, to make the engine bay look 'detailed' and nice.

Rs. 393 for the job is par for the course. You should get back to the dealership and/or Hyundai, for the Rs.490 'outside job-others' that they scammed you with. That's not right! (Or get them to justify it, to your satisfaction.

P.S: (Just a suggestion: if you have an ownership thread, might be good to take this there).

Otherwise, could you share the cost of just the 'actual' first service (cost, without optional services and/or add-on jobs [such as the one above])?

Re: Hyundai Elite i20 : Official Review

Suffered a Tyre damage yesterday on Delhi Jaipur Highway. Have given it to the tyre dealer for inspection. Also bought Bridgestone B290 as spare. Stock was B250(185/70/14). The tyre had clocked 11000 KMs.

I am posting the pictures. Looks to me like a manufacturing defect.

Below is the puncture :

Damage to the inside :

Damage on the outside :

I noticed some sound while driving, but being a new driver didn't realize that it was a puncture. Only when a cab driver pointed it out, i stopped and checked the tyres. So it was a bit of mistake from my side too.

Re: Hyundai Elite i20 : Official Review

We took delivery of our i20 Sportz diesel last weekend (3-May)
Hyundai Elite i20 : Official Review-0.jpg
Few initial impressions that I would like to bring to everyone’s notice.
1. From April 2, 2015 along with the price hike, Hyundai has removed one or few features in each variant (effective from April). Our dealer missed to inform us and we noticed it on our own after PDI. Thanks to Team-BHP checklist
In our model (Sportz ) – Luggage lamp has been removed.
In Asta/Sports(o) – only one 12v power outlet
For more information visit - http://www.hyundai.com/in/en/Showroo...PIP/index.html
2. If you have any concern with the car or dealer, don’t hesitate to write/call Hyundai customer care. The response is awesome and they make sure to get the dealer in a conference call and resolve the concern at the earliest.
3. The car is AMAZING (500kms done so far). Didn’t get any dents on applying pressure on the body. The steering mounted controls are causing little inconvenience while honking. Guess it will take little practice as we are new to it. One comment we got from all our relatives –“for a lengthy car, the space between front and back seat looks less through the window”. But once they got in the rear seat it gave a completely different picture.

They have also removed leather cover for steering wheel and gear knob from Sportz and Sportz(o) variants.

Also Auto up down(driver window only) has been removed from Sportz model.

Re: Hyundai Elite i20 : Official Review

Hey guys, I have ordered 2 accessories from Ebay meant to be fitted in my car. One is a brake light flasher and another one is a DRL

1. Now, here is the question. Will it void my car's warranty?
2. Will my Hyundai service center fit these accessories in my car if I approach them?
3. What will the average fitting charges?
