Re: Toyota Liva Diesel : Test Drive & Review

I am planning to sell my liva diesel gd version. 2012 Jan model and around 110000kms run. The car was brought through company leased option and then got transferred to my name in 2015. It is single use only and it is in extremely good condition.
What is the expected price for this car?

Re: Toyota Liva Diesel : Test Drive & Review

Wish Toyota launch more diesel vehicles of thier own , as of now on the lower end it's all Maruti clones which is sad. Although they do give 3 years 1 lakh as standard warranty for all thier vehicles for which Maruti gives 2 years 40k standard but then a Toyota is a Toyota

I think diesel will die a slow death globally. The emission norms are getting stricter and diesel will have to give away at some point. Even the BS6 Diesel designs are an after thought and will cause reliability issues in the long run ( except in the case where you have frequent long drives )

Even brands like Toyota which are known for producing reliable engines are feeling the pinch in other countries with regards to euro 6 variants of their diesels. In India it's only a matter of time before the BS6 Diesel reliability issues starts cropping up. We have just started with it this year.

Re: Toyota Liva Diesel : Test Drive & Review

We are back !! we are hungry !! and we drink only diesel , as soon as Covid restrictions lifted and inter state travel was allowed me and my Liva were back on the road doing what we do best , eating miles and miles of roads

My Etios Liva GD has now crossed the 1.5 lakh milestone and am short on words to appreciate the car .

There is absolutely no loss of power , no rattles or niggles no issues at all . The Liva is a diva and doesn't show its age at all .

The only thing to take care for me is servicing at 10k km intervals .
All the credit for maintaining the car in tip top condition goes to Wasan Toyota Mumbai and my preferred service advisor Shirish Salaskar .

Toyota has apparently now switched to 5W30 BS6 engine oil as standard for all vehicles , have used the same for 1.5 lakh servicing(Servicing done at 148k as had a trip planned) and the engine feels a lot more smoother and silent in idle , the 4th gear feels even taller on the highways , there is something crisp about the engine noise and overall feels fantastic .

The trip I went after the latest servicing was Mumbai - Jhansi 1100 Km in 13.5 hours and its been absolutely hassle free journey once again .
The FastTag definitely saves time but its the ever eager engine that still makes me smile , hope the car goes on an on !!!

It still gives 20+ economy on highways when driven sedately , and 17 in city and even with the fast drives like above one to Jhansi it gives 15+ economy .

The next real test will be Spiti valley full circuit this June , by that time it should be closer to 1.65 lakh km , the car has covered Ladakh/Bhutan and it just gobbles up any type of terrain in the worst of conditions so hoping Spiti to be smooth as well .

My next car will be a Toyota for sure !! am hoping Toyota rebadged Ertiga is offered in Diesel as well and I will definitely buy it for my family trips while my solo's will be in Liva .

It will be time for new shoes soon , one suggestion needed is should I stick with Earth 1 or shift to the newer BueEarth GT AE51 from Yokohoma ? Any long term reviews on same specially on bad roads given the next trip is Spiti ?

Re: Toyota Liva Diesel : Test Drive & Review

At 151000 km and 5.5 years have finally done a small upgrade to Liva.

Installed the Woodman Neo5 Android Touch screen stereo and the rear camera .

Cost me 9999 with the camera , one can get it for 8999 during festive deals.
The Stock speakers are still doing the duty and working quite well .

The stock unit came with Agama launcher , which I have replaced with with this free car launcher
The free launcher is quite good and customizable and feels a lot more premium than the Agama launcher which felt a bit dated in design and seemed pretty restrictive to me .

Am using the Jiofi dongle for Wi-Fi and so far everything is working smooth .

The music player is AIMP , output from AIMP without any use of equalizers seems to be similar on the ear as the single din Pioneer unit I had before , tried Musicolet and other music players with bass and volume boosters as well but AIMP on its own seems to be a lot better option .

So far my interaction with Woodman has been very good , they forgot to send the USB cables and promptly sent the same when requested , their customer support and tech team helped as needed with any queries around the install . The fit could have been better but there is no fascia frame for Etios Liva apart from the 2 side brackets as seen below .

The only complain is the buttons on left are not backlit so using them after evenings is a challenge, am planning to stick radium stickers next to it to help with judging the button location at night .
Apart from that bye bye to my CD's .

@aniketbapat - Thanks for sharing.
Quick question, does it have external GPS for maps or do you still plan to use your mobile for that? Asking because phone GPS is a drain on the battery and tends to make it very hot.

BTW..what is the view of this forum on being able to use glanza/baleno auto-dimming rear view mirror in Etios?
Dealers flatly refused.

It is not just the badge but the engine. Although the new 1.5 L Diesel from Maruti won't be a MJD or Fiat sourced still shall be considerably reliable. However, I doubt it could get a fan following as ardent as that of Toyota's 1.4L diesel used in Etios, Liva and Corolla.

Considering your drives and also planned for a Spiti trip, Earth 1 suit you the best. I am using BluEarth and it is a soft compound giving you a pleasant ride.

Best of luck mate. Eager to read more of your trips with your beloved Liva.

Neo 5 comes with its own GPS antenna so no need for phone GPS .

Following are in the box for Neo5.
- Neo5- 1 U,
- GPS Antenna 1U,
- USB Port 2U (Note : USB is not a direct port , it comes as a wired port with one end plugged into the Neo5 directly and the other end is the USB port which can be taken out via the glovebox)
- Other Power Connectors 1U

USB via glovebox for reference.

Re: Toyota Liva Diesel : Test Drive & Review

I know, very few might have brought this car and even fewer will still be using it, me being one of them 😊
I recently completed 10 years with my Liva and I thought of sharing the ‘stats’ for those who are still using it.

The BlueEarth tyres are leagues ahead when compared to Earth1. I recently did a Pune-Manali Trip on my Scross with BlueEarth tyres and the they performed pretty well without any issues.
As far as I know, Toyota has one of the best OEM engine oils (they use Idemitsu if i am not wrong), have observed close to nil engine issues and good engine life.

Re: Toyota Liva Diesel : Test Drive & Review

"Liva the Diva" is now at 186,000 km and 7 yrs .

Runs butter smooth and gives 20-22 on highway and 17-18 in city if driven sedately.
On the last trip Mum-Noida-Mum I faced an alternator issue which I have detailed below, I will also list down few of the repairs done over the last year in my next post to give due credit to Toyota Dealerships as well as garages who helped take care of Liva in a timely manner.

Spiti valley circuit was completed as planned in July 2021 with 155,000 on ODO, we did lose the engine/sump guard thanks to a nail protruding out of wooden plank in a bridge near Kaza town but other than that no issues at all, Liva took all the beating easily.

Alternator Replacement - Kayyum Motors Gwalior – 9th August 2022

I was on Mum-Noida drive with family and things were looking great, after office had made a stop at Dhule for the night and next day was planning to be in Agra and visit Taj mahal before reaching Noida.

Around 30 km before Gwalior, I saw the "battery" symbol in bright red don't know how long before it was switched on but am assuming it wasn't long.

As soon as I saw it next thought in my mind was “Arey nahinnn, no Taj tomorrow” !!! and the next thought was “save battery”, immediately switched off AC, ICE, and charging points, informed family we will now stay in Gwalior and started driving leisurely, luckily, I had already shortlisted a hotel in Gwalior which is a good practice I follow with family given the ageing car and also since its rainy season best to have plan B in case.

The hotel I had looked up was “Krishnam Guest house” in Gwalior and it was around 25 km from there, I reached the hotel around 8:15pm and tried searching for a garage but didn’t find any open, the hotel person also confirmed the shops close by 8 so best to try tomorrow morning.

Krishnam guest house is a nice, well kept, value for money place and its owner Shantanu is always there to help as needed, will definitely visit them again.

So with no option I switched off the car, not sure if it would start again tomorrow morning!!!

I had battery discharged once at petrol pump (about 1+ years ago, battery was old and close to replacement which was planned that week itself) so was aware of battery issues although was seeing the red battery symbol for the first time.

I was mostly sure it was a battery charging issue and not a battery issue as the battery is only 1 yr. old and hence was prepared for Alternator issues and understood that I had a long day ahead.

So next morning luckily the car started with battery light on, I went to local garage first given Anant Toyota was around 12 km away and didn’t want to take a chance with remaining battery charge, and they suspected its alternator issue but they didn’t give me the confidence if they can procure the alternator or repair it same day , foolishly I kept the car running waiting for their electrician to arrive my thinking was I don’t want to be stuck at a place which is not sure and hence didn’t want to kill the engine lest it doesn’t start again.

Soon enough I lost patience and decided to bite the bullet and drive to Anant Toyota, I quickly searched for another garage nearby “Kayyum motors” was 1.2km away but they didn’t open till 10:30am and I thought worst case let me try Anant Toyota and if I can reach there surely, I can charge the battery and comeback in city later if needed.

I confirmed Kayyum motors was locked and headed to Anant Toyota, which was 11km away and now the battery symbol had started blinking as well and my heart was thumping faster as well 😊

I managed to reach Anant Toyota which already had a deluge of cars to service, it was the long weekend coming up so more cars had turned up than expected.

Did the walkin formalities and was told first they will diagnose the problem and take it from there. I informed them I had to reach Noida so please let me know what best can be done, they took their time and after almost 1.5 hours of me pushing they confirmed it’s an alternator issue and needs to be replaced but unfortunately, they don’t have it in stock as its not a routine replacement part and needs to be ordered. They didn’t have an ETA for arrival of new alternator and given it was the long weekend I was not very positive.

I gave them 2 options
1) If I get them after market alternator, will they fit it here given I cannot take a risk of taking the car to city now – this option was not accepted

2) Requested them to charge the battery for some time so I can work out something in the city.

On listening to my options and my constant pushing they referred my case to their GM who requested me to wait till 2 pm as he wanted to confirm if one of the ordered diesel alternators for Liva would reach by their truck expected tonight(not sure why it takes 2 hours to confirm that but given the glimmer of hope of getting OEM part I relented), by that time It was already lunchtime and Anant Toyota Gwalior is situated almost 9 km from city and had no hotels nearby, luckily they had onsite canteen and offered me free lunch(which is appreciated) and I waited patiently .

In the meantime, I contacted kayyum motors and asked them for options, Kalim bhai the owner asked me for some time to confirm. I waited hoping Anant Toyota will give me good news at 2 or worst case I can get the alternator repaired or replaced outside, I requested the staff to recharge the car battery while I waited which they promptly did.

At 2 I called the GM he didn’t respond, gave them more time and at 2:15 started pushing again to meet the GM, he was on another meeting, around 2:30 finally met him but got the news that he had received a mail from Toyota that alternators for Etios are not being dispatched due to tech reasons and that the truck coming tonight doesn’t have the ones ordered.

Didn’t know what to make of the news but by that time I had already made up my mind to go to Kayyum motors and try my luck there.

So thanked the GM asked them to put in the battery and decided to rush to city, Kalim bhai was trying to get hold of his electrician and battery guys and on call he said “You come over don’t worry we will get it done, mostly it can be repaired else we will get a replacement”!! That was the confidence booster I really needed and without wasting much more time I reached kayyum motors at 3pm.

Outside Kayyum motors is an electrical auto and battery shop ”Aslam electricals” and I was referred to them, they attended to my car promptly and had already enquired about replacement alternator with a local dealer and quoted 11k for the same apart from labour, then went about removing the alternator which did take sometime and by 4 had removed the alternator tested it to find it was a voltage regulator issue and the motor winding was also quite old but which they said both can be repaired.

Since my car had already run 1.84k km and I intend to keep it forever and had to cover another 2k km including return to Mumbai, I suggested we replace the alternator if we are getting the “Valeo” company Alternator(was assuming it would be Denso or Bosch but it was Valeo) , spoke to the dealer and he confirmed he had Valeo itself(which was the sweetest thing I had heard that day !!) and after discount he offered it for 10200 which was fine by me, So the owner took me to the shop and back we came with glistening Valeo alternator !! By then it was already around 5pm.

I don’t know if its OEM or whether 10k is a good price, but I did double check on google/boodmo for Valeo alternator compatible with Liva diesel and it was similarly priced so went ahead.

We had already checked the belt and surprisingly It was fine, will replace the belt if needed in next service.

So in another 1.5 hours the new alternator was put in and tested and the red battery light was gone which was a great relief.

In hindsight apart from foolishness of keeping the car running at the first garage I think it was all fine, Yes Anant Toyota couldn’t help me but they tried, they also agreed to get the alternator replaced next day even though it was a holiday, if only the alternator arrived by the truck that night!

Hats off to Kalim bhai of Kayyum motors and Aslam electricals they did a brilliant job and quickly too and after 2000km back home I can confirm there were no further issues.

Valeo was a surprise as had never heard that name before but thanks to Etios being used as taxis, parts are not an issue, while some think having a taxi image is not great for me that was the positive point when choosing Liva 7 years ago.

Re: Toyota Liva Diesel : Test Drive & Review

Valeo is an OEM supplier. High probability that Toyota is also one of their customer. In aftermarket, it's basically same product from these OEM suppliers minus the OEM branding.
