I wouldn't go by the words of the garage owners regarding used fans. Just like the fan in your car has started giving trouble after running for some distance and time, a fan in a used car would fail too. And how do you know how much time the fan in the used car has run? Like Vishy76 suggested, get it replaced with a new fan. A used one is always risky. Yes you could be lucky, but you could be unlucky as well!

You need to get your engine mounts checked thoroughly as well since that might be causing vibrations due to increased engine speed when you turn on the air con. The rest of it is upto your mechanic. If the vibes are too strong, it might not only be the fan but also the compressor pulley. Get the serpentine belt removed and check the tensioner and pulley bearing.
Point taken.
Infact engine mounts is the first thing that my mechanic also told me. However since the vibrations occur when Aircon is turned on, we ruled out the mountings going bad. However I'll get that checked as well.
Does the compressor pulley not being in the right shape causes excess vibrations as well? Didn't get across anything like that on the internet as well as mechanics. But will get that checked as well.
Many thanks.

Yes. I agree with this.
Just that I am enquiring about the possibilities as of now.

So there are 2 fans overall. I meant the fan on the left if I am standing looking at the engine with the bonnet open.

Between how did you get it repaired? Many mechanics told me that it can't be repaired and a replacement is the ONLY option.

If the vibration is from the fan then you can easily check it for yourself. Observe both the fans with engine running. If any of the fan is wobbling and rotation is not smooth then the bush is worn out. If you are comfortable in removing the fan yourself then I can help you with the steps although I do not have any pictures in my record. Else you can take the help of a friendly mechanic.

Once the fan assembly is removed then you have to remove the faulty fan and carefully break open the seals. You will need to get the bush replaced from a good electrician specialising in repairing alternators.

It is a myth that the fan can not be repaired. You will be amazed to know that even my mechanic was surprised when he came to know that I had repaired the fan!

From what you have posted I think that you need to get the engine mountings checked properly. Is your car manual or automatic?

Do let me know if you need any help.

Dear Sarfaraz,

I used your procedure & enabled the auto folding for the side view mirrors on my Passat. Many thanks !

Re: Volkswagen Jetta : Test Drive & Review

Hi Folks,

Hope you're all doing well.

It's been a while since my last update.

Since the Lockdown lot of things have cooked up.
  1. My battery gave up. Did a jump start. It got drained so much that my RCD turned completely off and asked me the passcode which I swear I don't have or remember.
  2. Neighbour construction work - The folks damaged my car with many minor dents. Some cement drops here and there.
  3. I saw my left headlight flickering. Turns on when I go over a pothole.
Turns off again at the next hump. I realised this could be a rat bite.
  4. My brother, who he is used to our Rapid, somehow got confused with the mirror knob placement, wrestled with it and presented it's head to me.
  5. After a few weeks my parking sensors gave up. When I put in reverse, It beeps and starts blinking. That's all.
  6. One fine day I get the coolant level warning.
I went down and the next day to open the bonnet and see coolant less than half.
  7. On the way I stopped to say hi to a friend. Forgot to turn off then ignition for 5 mins and Voila. Says 'Hi' the dead battery AGAIN.
Fortunately, I had the helping hands and this time I could do a push start.

Spoke to a few friends and ASC SA Natraj at VW Palace Cross, Mysore road. I was asked to come immediately.

    This happened on the way!

    Volkswagen Jetta : Test Drive & Review-img20200625wa0018.jpg

Stopped near KTM Banashankari with the hood open for a few minutes giving it the lungi wind effect.

After 15 - 20 mins it was back to normal temperature. Then rushed to ASC.

That's when the mechanic showed this.

He says "Look what the rats did"

    Volkswagen Jetta : Test Drive & Review-img_20200625_155820.jpg

He said I'll have to leave my car, especially for this hose.
  8. 3 days later I get a call saying my low-pressure fuel hose is also eaten.

Inevitably I asked them to repair a few things and replace with new ones accordingly. I'll update once I get my car.

Respected BHPians,

I am judicious follower of Team-BHP and once while going through the Indian Car Scene, I found this thread.

There I noticed that a few BHPians were having problems with their beautiful Jetta’s headliner and some said that the A.S.S had told them to get it done from outside and do not get the OEM option. I had an experience I would like to share regarding the aftermarket headliner installation. I have a 2015 Swift and I wanted the headliner to be finished in black as I like an all-black interior. I went to a reputed shop in Pune and the person installed the black headliner and now after 4 months, I realise that this decision was not so good. The glue on that headliner will smell forever and it is a very toxic smell that makes your eyes burn and nose uneasy. Before driving in the morning after parking the car overnight, I have to keep all the doors and windows open to allow the smell to go away and after coming back home, I have to wash my eyes 5-6 times and they still burn. Tried everything, from wiping the liner with water solution to parking the car in the sun to let the glue settle. It is a horrible ordeal and made me realise that there is nothing like an OEM finish. I wanted to share this so that those who are deciding can be made better aware before they spoil their beautiful cars. Please do not go for aftermarket headliner in order to save Rs. 10,000 - 15,000. Please go for OEM. Many people will not notice this burning sensation and might relate it to other things and say everything is fine, but its not. This smell is toxic and not just unpleasant. May be harmful in the long run. I've ruined mine and you don't ruin yours.

Hi Chirag,

Very sorry to hear this horrendous experience.

Just curious, how much would the OEM roof liner of a Swift cost?

Could this be one of the case? I have seen many BHPians and Non BHPians in my circle here in Bengaluru getting the liner outside ASCs. They were all good.

BTW, any update of what happened later?

Re: Volkswagen Jetta : Test Drive & Review

Hi all,
I have an issue with my 2012 Jetta. The roof liner on the passenger side is sagging due to the glue giving away and I think it might get worse in the coming days. Is there a good auto shop that can rectify this in Bangalore? How much will it cost if I opt for OEM? Thanks in advance.

Do not go to Volkswagen. The entire headliner will be replaced and it will cost 45-50K.

Take it to a competent upholstery shop and get it done. I was quoted 5.6K for redoing the entire headliner cloth by an accessory shop in my city.

Hi Shivasuma, I too have a 2012 Jetta and had the same issue.

Adding to what Vishy said. I got my roofliner done by an FNG.

Check here (Volkswagen Jetta : Test Drive & Review)

The part number should be the same as the one in the post from VWVortex. Go to Module 42 - Door Elect, Driver. Click on "Security Access" and enter the security access key as "04354". Now go to adaptation and find System_Parameter_14 (looking from the bottom in the list will save time). Change Byte 1 from "E0" to "E9". This should work. This worked on my 2011 Jetta Highline DSG.
It will fold the ORVM's when we press and hold the lock button on the key fob and it will unfold when we open the driver door.
Wow.. this is such a useful trick. A feature sorely missing in such a capable car. Thanks for bringing it back after such a long time.

I wanted to ask if there is any way to keep the front parking sensors ON all the time. Right now sensors become active automatically while reversing. But if not reversing, I have to press a button to enable these sensors. Is there a VCDS setting to enable this? Thanks

Haha, I know right!

I don't think keeping the front sensors on at all times is possible. But you can increase the speed till which they stay on once you press the button or engage reverse.

Parking sensors (actually proximity sensors) are on all the time - you do not need to "force" them to be on all the time.

For example, whenever I am in heavy traffic or at a traffic light, the sensors keep beeping (and displaying on the screen) whenever someone (say a pedestrian trying to cross, or a biker maneuvering to a better position, etc.) comes a little too close to the bumpers - front and rear.

Cheers

This is exactly what I want. I don't have this feature and I am sure it can be turned on using VCDS. Couldn't find anything online though I didn't look hard. Will have to do some more online research for this.

I am surprised your Jetta does not have this feature. The 2015 Facelift (my car) does.

Cheers
