TVS Wego: Test Drive and Intial Ownership review

Dear all,

I have bought a TVS Wego on 10 Nov 2010.

I have been a member of this wonderful forum for many months now. Was planning to buy my first car, and what better place than Team-BHP for the information, unbiased reviews and excellent suggestions.

Well, been driving from last 10+ years, but on 2 wheels. Covered more than 100 K Km. it started with my dad’s Kawasaki Bajaj RTZ KB100. Then when I was in University, had a Boxer CT which I drove almost for 65000 km in a span of 5 years. It served me well during my days of job searching and when I was in my first job. After returning from a long onsite tenure, went for Suzuki Zeus 125 XCD which I drove about 35000 km in 4 years. In the meanwhile lot of things happened on the personal front, got married, and changed job. As I was planning to buy a car, wanted to sell my Zeus and buy a small scooter which myself and my wife both could drive.

I had looked at the following options and these are my opinions:

1) Suzuki Access

This was my first choice. I was very much impressed with Zeus. Access had the same 125 cc engine as the Zeus. The ‘XTP’ thing is pretty useful as it offers the maximum torque at lesser RPM than the competition. On test drive, I found it to be a tad too heavy and wide as well. This doesn’t suit the shorter drivers well. The seat was also little higher than the other scooters in this range. To add to these, I knew pretty well about the ‘cold start’ problems of the Suzuki engine. I was also finding the quality of service personnel in Suzuki showrooms were on the negative gradient. The most important factor why I chose to stay away from Access was the waiting period of 3 Months. This was too much for me.

2) Honda Activa

This is THE most popular scooter of them all in the market. It has the advantage of excellent resale value. This 110 cc engine is an epitome of refinement and performance. Activa is Available in a many colors. Unfortunately the waiting period is currently 100 days in Bangalore. Take it or leave it attitude of dealerships is also not very positive. I was not interested in thinking about the resale value even before I bought the vehicle so was interested in looking else where.

3) Mahindra Rodeo

Powerful 125 cc engine, attractive exchange rate for my existing bike almost made me book this one. But after a few test drives, I found that Rodeo doesn’t have the power to weight ratio that I would prefer. It has a small handle and short turning radius. Very easy to make mistakes when driving at high speeds, small pot holes which shake your hands can easily result in loss of balance. Further, presence of the fuel tank in the front makes it even more dangerous in case of collisions. The fuel tank capacity is only 4.5 litres which means more frequent visits to the fuel stations. After sales service of Mahindra was unknown territory so did not want to take such risk. I read some where on the forum that mileage was not very satisfactory for most owners. Keeping above points in mind, extended my search towards Wego..!

4) TVS Wego

Went to Kubera motors, HSR layout on a late Sunday afternoon, almost half convinced that dealership would be closed. Luckily it was open. After a brief chat with the SA, went for the test drive. WOW, the ‘body balance tech’ which TVS claims is not a mere marketing gimmick. The vehicle is extremely well balanced and has good power to weight ratio. The engine is refined and offers very good performance. Accessories like floor mat and rear view mirrors come free with the vehicle unlike in Active where every extra bit of equipment is a heavily priced accessory. So after a little haggle with the dealer about the exchange price for my existing bike, booked the Wego. I was told that the delivery would be in 10 days time.

To my surprise, I got a call from the SA Mr. Satish in just 2 days that a Cappuccino Brown Wego is ready in his stockyard and I can pick it up if I would like to. So quickly left office and rushed to the dealer. Done the PDI as per Team-BHP check list, finished the paperwork and voila, I have the Wego. I would rate the Dealership 5 Stars.

Went straight to a temple, finished the Puja rituals and headed home.

The Vehicle is almost 3 weeks and 500 km old today. I am loving every bit of it. It has already smoothened and eager to run every time and twist the throttle. I never know when I reach 50 kmph. As the vehicle is still in the run-in period, I have not taken it above 60. The performance is more than I have ever expected. I certainly would recommend Wego as VFM product.

The following are a few things that I like about the Wego
· Excellent Ride quality and Balance
· Refined and powerful engine. Loads of Torque.
· Fuel Efficiency – It returned 45 km per Litre even before I service
· All metal body.
· External fuel tank lid. No need to get down and open the seat while refuelling.
· Inexpensive spares and wide dealership network

Few things that could have been better: (my wish list)
· Digital Cluster with Tachometer (for those like me who drive based on RPM)
· More fuel tank capacity. Currently is 5 Litres
· Tubeless or Puncture resistant tyres.
· More color Options. Currently only 4 Options and no white among them.

There are a lot of pictures on the forum and else where on internet, so skipping that part. My vehicle is anyway in stock condition except for handle grips and black powder coated body grill. Hope I will have a trouble free driving experience.

Hi, this is really an excellent VFM vehicle. Took delivery today, recorded only 20 km on the odo, but already started believing that I have made a good decision by buying it.

Add to that , the finishing near the tail lamp cluster , the fitting isnt top notch and doesnt look good . It looks as though some one remembered at the last moment that they had to fill a gap at the back . Otherwise the gaddi is zimblyyyy awesome !

Re: TVS Wego: Test Drive and Intial Ownership review

I am getting a mileage of 48 KMPL from the second refill itself. I am managing to hit 90kmph atleast for a few seconds everyday. The engine suddenly seems suddenly to become very silent and free revving after crossing 65 - 70 kmph, may because the max torque is at 7000 RPM. (My Assumption).

I am very happy with my decision of buying a wego.

I thot the 4 colour options were black, chocolate brown, golden brown and white. At least those are the colours available in pune. I just got the delivery of my Jet black Wego yesterday evening.

That's true in Goa too!! Activa has that much waiting period from day 1.

Good choice I must say .
IMO all metal body is a big plus and that was the main reason why I bought Activa some 2 years back as a gift to my younger bro. when he was actually tilted towards sporty looking Dio.

Thanks for the review, we were in two minds here about buying the access or the Wego & your review made it clear. Can you post an update on what is the current performance & ownership experience for the last year or so now ? Are you aware of good exchange deals on this bike ?

Re: TVS Wego: Test Drive and Intial Ownership review

Got Our Cappucino Brown Wego today!

Wanted to buy Wego ever since it was launched.
Its 53K on road and comes with Buzzer, mats , side stand , mirrors and front dicky as standard.

The best part about wego is its Ride quality, simply too good for a scooter.

Also 1275mm long wheelbase does make it much more stable then say a DIO.

Re: TVS Wego: Test Drive and Intial Ownership review

Wego is 3 months old, have done close to 1400k

+ve's

*Ride, handling, braking is the best i have experienced in scooters

*Body balance works at low speeds as well, you dont have to put your feet down unless at the very last moment

*FE has been excellent for a scooter, consistently above 40, best has been 48 till date ( i seldom drive above 60 )

*Centre stand is very easy effort required is much less.

*Engine feel and sound is crisp, pick up good till 50kph

* Fuel filler - external really helps.

-ve's

High rear seat is difficult/get down to climb for women
Headlight beam not the best
Front dicky is smaller than activa
Top speed does not encourage long highway drives.
Fuel tank is only 5 lts

I am waiting for disc brake version to be launched.
Will surely fit the disc brake

New colours have been launched - Mettalic grey and turquoise green.
I am overall very happy with WEGO and find it a better option than activa anytime.

Re: TVS Wego: Test Drive and Intial Ownership review

Hi Silverado!

Waking up a sleeping thread. Any updates on your Wego? Any modifications? Did you fit that disc brake? It's something that I have in mind too.

On a different note, my front brake makes quite a racket these days. Have you experienced this?

Cheers,
SlowRider
