A good person, and a proactive journalist

His issues with a well known manufacturer is enough to underline his sincerity to the profession and himself. See the excerpt from an obituary couple of days ago.

I had a chance to meet him couple of years back and found to be really down to earth and passionate, his style of describing his expedition is unforgettable.

RIP Dilip Bam. I knew him and last I met him was probably more than a decade back. I know his family and his nephew is a great friend of mine. Dilip had a vast knowledge of two wheelers. In addition he had excellent knowledge on engineering side, physics, geography, etc. He used to share so many details like driving Kinetic Honda in Sahara desert, drive taxi, his days at Tata, IIT, XLRI, didn't join IAS after selection etc. Truly a gem of a person with vast knowledge.

Felt so saddening to hear this news.

I had my first rendezvous with the larger-than-life personality that Mr. Bam was, back in 2007. He gave a guest lecture at the Robocon event in MIT College, Pune. Needless to say he was a total rockstar! I had read his road tests in magazines before, but never had a chance to meet him, or for that matter any other Automotive Journalist in flesh and blood. To me, these guys were what Sachin was to cricket aficionados, or SRK was to movie buffs, back in the day.

Back then I was a wide-eyed engineering student, who was just starting to realize that the Automotive Industry was probably his calling in life and listening to Mr. Bam went a long way in strengthening my resolve. Met him after the lecture and asked him, how do I go about being an automotive journalist? I will be eternally grateful to him for not dismissing me. Instead he invited me to his home for a detailed discussion.

Two weeks later I took his appointment, and met him along with my concerned Mom, who thought I was going to throw away all the good grades gotten in 10th, 12th and Engineering and become a newspaper reporter, instead of joining a 'normal' company.

Just like his reviews, his counsel was also completely honest and to the point. He told me that being a journalist was not about driving exotics, attending junkets and touring cross the country. Told me how bad the pay was and overall dissuaded me from pursuing the profession. I stuck with it though, eventually began my stint at Bike India & Car India in 2009, and I'm sure he would have been proud of me, of having persisted with it with full knowledge and acceptance of the caveats, beforehand.

Never got a chance to meet him again. Recently met a colleague who was an old protege of his, and we planned to go visit him on an occasion like teacher's day or guru-pornima. But we lost our chance, I will regret it for the rest of my life.

I too grew up reading his articles in Auto India. I remember vividly asking my parents for a subscription of that magazine as a B'day gift.

All bike and two wheeler reviews were by Dilip Bam and I would always read and re-read those articles. I do remember the cylinder test and would silently chuckle when ever I saw someone with a cylinder placed in their scooter.

I finally saw him at one of the IIT Alumni meets ( My dad is an Alumnus of IIT Bombay ), but could never talk or interact with him.

His style of writing was truely unique.

Mr Bam would be missed by many. May his soul rest in peace.

He catalyzed my interest in automobiles from when I was a 10th standard student. Purpose and practicality were always considered when he speaks.

Now the Gods have him in their court. They'd sure be bitten by him and may not send him back. They make not make such 'models' again.

Born on January 4, 1947, he cleared his 12th exam under merit in 1964. The next 4 years were spent at IIT Roorkee studying mechanical engineering. After a brief stint with Kirloskar working on diesel engines, he did his MBA from XLRI Jamshedpur, finishing among top 5 in his batch. This was followed by a series of jobs in apparently unrelated companies, ending as the CEO of Flexican Malaysia, which he left in 1987 to return to India.

Back in the country, he started working as a professor at BITS Pilani, while conducting evidently strange programs like “Presentations, Practice, and Decision Making based on the TV Serial Star Trek”, at respected institutions like Symbiosis, BIMM, ICFAI, IMDR etc.

As a guest lecturer on Personality Development at Symbiosis around 1995-1997, he was well-known for driving his own Auto Rickshaw to the campus everyday. He even wrote an article on making Auto Rickshaw the official vehicle of the President of India.

Last paragraph had me . That is classic Bam!

Man, if there was one thing Dilip Bam was, it's UNIQUE (as his friend said). A great video for his fans that shows an inside view of his life, house & family.

Don't know anyone else who has a life-size Marilyn Monroe cutout in his house. Then, he was once caught smoking on the Symbiosis campus. Principal warned him to stop doing that. He quit the job

Only guy on the planet who must've seen a cat eat his own ear!!

Can't talk much about his 'laws of nature' (forum rules), but hahahaha! Classic, man.

Whenever you hear thunder in the skies, it's probably Dilip Bam making the Gods laugh. RIP Sir. There's no one else like you.
