Re: The ADV Tyre Thread

Owned the Himalayan 411 BS6 - 90/90-21 and 120/90-17. Had the CEAT Gripp XL as stock. Would say not a good tyre for touring in mixed conditions, not meant for speeds beyond 90 kmph as they never contributed to the braking feel, wet grip wasnt good at all, not confidence inspiring. City use was a good experience. Offroad? Excellent! Had one puncture on the rear tyre but nothing else. I would say the Apollo Tramplrs that I experienced on the 390 ADV X is the best on an ADV yet.

Rear lasted 13800 km, and was replaced with TVS Eurogrip Pancer 120/80-17 as a catastrophic blowout in a small village on a Sunday night rendered it useless, and no other choices available in the 120 section. Like Shyam said, the overactive ABS certainly contributed to the accelerated wear. The TVS was a great tyre onroad, lousy offroad, dipped and gripped much better than the CEATs even in the wet hence never bothered changing to the default size. Even at 21600 km when I sold the bike, wear was very minimal, probably ~30%.

The front was never changed, probably had another 1500 km left. The front ABS was not as intrusive - in fact I dont remember triggering it even once, hence the long life.

No worries! I think you are mixing durability and purpose (or grip offered) of the tyres, they are linked but quite different concepts.

Let me add to your confusion though! Lets take the Mitas example itself. Mitas for some of its offroad oriented tyres upwards of the Enduro Trail + have what is called a Dakar version of the tyre. So while the tyre is still still 50/50 i.e. the tread pattern remains the same, the Dakar version is significantly more 'durable' as its got a different compound that makes it last longer and has a stiffer carcass reducing the flex of the sidewall.

Read about the Dakar version here - https://www.mitas-moto.com/en/produc...uro-trail-plus

The 50/50 or 60/40 designation is more to do with the tread type (depth & spacing) itself than the pattern i.e. Chevron or paddles.

Have a look at the Pirelli Rally STR (70/30) -

And now the Pirelli Rally (more 50/50) -

Both these are nearly the same, the only difference is the spacing of the blocks and maybe the depth (not specified on their website, hence I'm unsure)

My bad. I didn't notice the lower tread depth on the ADV tyres; hence the confusion. I thought they're positioning an equally capable (to the Trail+) off-road tyres, to a larger audience.

The Pirelli Rally STRs look identical to the Mitas's Trail-ADV. You can see the difference in tread depth- at least on the shoulder ones- on the right side tyre edge in the image. But, Pirelli don't seem to offer with the chevron pattern unlike Mitas, which is better for mixed usage. So, I think there's a huge gap between the 60:40 Enduro Trail+Dakar of Mitas and say the 50:50 Trail XT+ or Metzeler's Karoo 4 you're considering, than the 10% difference would suggest. I'm starting to think perhaps these ratings should only be considered with the manufactures' line-up of tyres as context, and not be compared with others' directly.

Yep, there is no exact science/logic to arrive at this on/off-road ratio.

Best to be taken with a pinch of salt and not to get too lost in the semantics of it!

Re: The ADV Tyre Thread

How are the Maxxis Maxplore tires for the 390 Adventure? The Price seems too good to be true. Are the Mitas Trail tires available in the standard 390 ADV stock size? Metzeler Tourance is unbeatable when it comes to Road and Touring , but struggles a lot on trails and off road. Looking for a 50-50 tires with off road bias but not finding much options for the 390 ADV.

Also, the imported tires seem to be atleast a year or even 18 months old ,when enquired on the various online stores. What age of tires are considered safe or usable? Is a physical inspection for cracks/defects better than relying on online store?
