I purchased a Bajaj Chetak EV (smart key model), which comes with two batteries—a main Li-ion battery and an auxiliary battery for the smart key system. Bajaj, in a cost-cutting move, sourced a low-quality auxiliary battery with only a 9-month warranty. Within this period, the battery started malfunctioning, rendering the scooter completely non-operational at times. Despite Bajaj and the battery supplier pushing customers to replace it, the poor design and cheap components caused repeated issues. 1. HDFC ERGO’s Unprofessional & Deceptive Practices
Forced Insurance at Purchase: Gujarat Motors (Bajaj dealer) pressured me into buying HDFC ERGO’s policy, with no alternative options.
Roadside Assistance Nightmare: Due to the auxiliary battery failure, I had to frequently use HDFC ERGO’s roadside assistance, but their service was slow and unresponsive.
Intentional Policy Renewal Block: HDFC ERGO seems to be deliberately exiting the Bajaj Chetak EV insurance segment but is doing so in a shady, unethical manner:
Online Renewal "Technical Error": They have blocked online renewals, showing fake "technical errors" to avoid IRDA violations.
No Local Office Support: They ask customers to visit their local office for renewal, but their offices are untraceable, and customer care provides no clear information.
Dealer Abandonment: Gujarat Motors, which forced HDFC ERGO policies at the time of purchase, is now uninterested in helping with renewals. 2. Bajaj’s Poor Quality Control & Lack of Accountability
The auxiliary battery was cheaply procured, leading to frequent failures and stranded vehicles.
Instead of owning the defect, Bajaj and the battery supplier shifted the burden onto customers for replacements.
The design flaw (smart key dependency on a faulty auxiliary battery) makes the scooter unreliable. 3. Gujarat Motors’ Role in This Scam
Forced HDFC ERGO Policy: At the time of purchase, they did not offer any other insurance option, limiting consumer choice.
No Support Later: Now, when renewal issues arise, they refuse to assist, showing zero accountability. Final Verdict: A Complete Failure of Consumer Trust
HDFC ERGO: Unethical, unprofessional, and deliberately making policy renewals impossible.
Bajaj Chetak EV: Poor quality control, defective auxiliary battery design, and no long-term solution.
Gujarat Motors: Complicit in forcing a bad insurance policy and then abandoning customers. ⚠️ Warning to Potential Buyers:
If you’re considering a Bajaj Chetak EV, be aware of:
✔ Faulty auxiliary battery issues (vehicle becomes dead without warning).
✔ HDFC ERGO’s unethical insurance practices (renewal deliberately blocked).
✔ Dealers like Gujarat Motors who force policies and then disappear. Demand for Action:
IRDAI should investigate HDFC ERGO’s deliberate policy renewal blocks.
Bajaj must recall/replace the defective auxiliary battery system.
Consumer forums should take note of such anti-consumer practices.
Spread the word! Share this to warn others and hold these companies accountable.
