Re: Delhi Government considers ban on New Petrol Two-Wheelers from 2026

Hybrid is here to stay - Wish India makes the worlds first Hybrid 2-wheeler. Wonder if anyone is even remotely working on that design/engineering.

Yamaha has it already, Fascino Hybrid.

Re: Delhi Government considers ban on New Petrol Two-Wheelers from 2026

There are only 100k autos and 2 wheelers in Delhi?

Quite a shock for someone who has spent all his life in Chennai and Bangalore.

I guess now I can understand why the Govt even thought a ban was feasible

Re: Delhi Government considers ban on New Petrol Two-Wheelers from 2026

This is a dumb move for sure. But, I'm not completely against this.

Instead of outright banning of ICE vehicles, increase the tax on them. Make ICE vehicles a premium purchase that only the 1% can afford.

Only bring this to effect once we have the vehicles that can replace ICE ones. Right now, the only decent alternative (barring price) is the Ultraviolette SuperStreet which can technically be considered your AIO (All-in-one) motorcycle.

But the main problem is still the charging infrastructure. No matter how many charging points you bring, the population in India is massive. Charging times are still super high per vehicle. I do not know if a full transition to EVs will be feasible unless charging time can be drastically reduced.

It is a semi-hybrid I would say. Driving the starter motor by stored battery energy sounds fancy. In real hybrid, it is better to have a separate EV architecture and the bike to run only on LiOn battery power for, say, 20-25kms on a single charge. And the % of fuel efficiency is not like 30-40% better over the petrol only engine. It is more like 10-15% I understand.

Re: Delhi Government considers ban on New Petrol Two-Wheelers from 2026

Its not long before some babu comes up with an idea over dinner and drinks that walking should be the only option in Delhi. However, soon that may also be subjected to providing proof that you have not had Beans/radishes over the past week. Air pollution, you see.

Watch the BS1/2/3 or 0 government and public vehicles ply shamelessly, while you walk briskly through construction dust, crop-burning smoke and what not.

Why have all eco-mentalists ended up in Delhi, in authority? Worse still, these are non-scientific minded ones! Every hare brained idea that comes up, its implemented in Delhi, with no analysis. Who is footing the bill of the expense that these diktats put on the citizens here? A majority of people are only able to scrounge and buy second vehicles. Are they all suddenly so rich that its a fair ask to buy new, and discard older vehicles?
Take note, rest of India, though. We are the guinea pigs, this offer will soon land at your doorstep too.

Re: Delhi Government considers ban on New Petrol Two-Wheelers from 2026

I've examined pollution white papers from various countries over the years. In most countries, automobiles hold a very small footprint in the overall pollution ratings. I've seen figures like 12% or so.

But yes, you're going to be more exposed to this 12% if half of your life is on roads, and indeed EVs help here. But EVs don't help the overall scene: huge amount of environmental effects in making li ion battery, then there's electricity production which isn't green.

I recommend government to wait it out until BS6 becomes maintream, you know even the BS3 is not phased out of its 15 year period yet.
There's no need to take any immediate action, or if they want, they could try cloud seeding to have artifical rain, but Indian government had badmouthed it when China did it in 2009, but then again, it was a different centre government than the one in power today.

Re: Delhi Government considers ban on New Petrol Two-Wheelers from 2026

India's Delhi plans to curb gasoline car sales, ban gas-guzzling bikes to shed polluter tag.

> Delhi to limit purchases of new fossil fuel cars to two per family
> Proposes ban on petrol and diesel bike, scooter sales from April 2027
> To provide tax waivers for hybrids, making them cheaper by 15%
> Policy is subject to change based on feedback from stakeholders

The primary objective "is to unlock the next phase of EV adoption, reduce air pollution and contribute to India's energy independence and net-zero targets," the draft stated.

The policy, which is expected to cost the Delhi government 28.6 billion rupees, is subject to change based on feedback from car makers and other stakeholders. It was not immediately clear when the policy will be finalised or how it will be funded.
