Ola Electric showrooms raided in India over trade certificate violations

More bad news for the e-scooter maker Ola Electric Mobility Ltd continues to pour in. The startup, once India’s biggest e-scooter maker, is now battling crises on multiple fronts. Shares have plunged over 60 % from its peak since listing in August. Its aggressive expansion has been encountering several speedbreakers.

The latest is a finding is that of the 3400 brick and mortar Ola outlets, just 100 (5%) have been found to be in possession of the mandatory trade certificate required under the Motor Vehicles Act. Consumer complaints have led to raids and investigations into the matter by transport authorities who have seized vehicles and closed showrooms. This trade certificate is necessary to be able to park unregistered vehicles, display, sell and offer test rides on or transport unregistered two-wheelers. Every auto showroom, including those for two-wheelers, should have a trade certificate conspicuously displayed if it keeps unregistered vehicles, according to Hans Kumar, a retired assistant transport commissioner who worked in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, according to Business Standard. Nearly two dozen RTO's across India are investigating the matter after having issued notices.

According to Ola, it states that it maintains an inventory of unregistered vehicles at its distribution centers and warehouses across Indian states “which are fully compliant with the guidelines of the Motor Vehicles Act, and have the necessary approvals".

The regulatory challenges come as the company lays off over a thousand employees and contract workers, as Bloomberg News reported this month.

As regards Ola's market share, once the undisputed leader in India’s electric two-wheeler market, Ola Electric is now battling plummeting sales, quality concerns, and stiff competition from legacy players like Bajaj Auto and TVS. Ola sold 24,376 units in January 2024, while the January 2025 the sales were down to 8390 units - a 76 % drop on a YoY basis.

Cant say I have any sympathy for the big B which is to say that he is a big talker with very little to show for it. This is when they just bought the scooter from a European country and have barely any R&D of their own. Also, who can forget, "the 4th largest EV company *Except China"

Ola seems to be in all kinds of trouble!, but one thing I noticed is that the Ola Experience Centres in many cities don't keep unregistered vehicles and the only vehicles in the centre are those for delivery to clients that too all of them come with number plates affixed from these distribution centres. The distribution centres and warehouses are very few and I guess only they have the necessary approvals.

Transport dept. conducts raids at Ola Electric stores across India

Indian authorities have conducted multiple raids at Ola Electric showrooms across India over regulatory violations.

According to media reports, out of the 3,400-odd showrooms, only about 100 stores had trade certificates required under the Motor Vehicles Act. It was found that more than 95% of the stores lacked the basic certification required to display, sell and offer test rides on or transport unregistered 2-wheelers.

In response, Transport authorities have reportedly conducted raids across multiple Indian states, seizing vehicles and shutting down showrooms. Reports suggest that show-cause notices have also been issued to the electric 2-wheeler maker.

Ola Electric responded to the reports stating, “Your investigation findings that there is non-compliance are misplaced and prejudiced.” The company also said that its distribution centres and warehouses are fully compliant with the guidelines of the Motor Vehicles Act and have the necessary approvals.

I pray this is the beginning of the end of an organization that has taken its customers and investors for a ride. Good riddance!

On another note, it's time the populace learned to choose not the cheapest but the more sensible options in the market. If something is too good to be true, it is delusional to begin with, and it will eventually make you feel despicable. A change of management is necessary for the company to have a redemption story, and that's not going to happen.

This is the slow death of a company with promise but no potential to improve. I suppose Ola is no different from a multi-level marketing or a chit-fund scam.

The shame of it all!

Govt Authorities have the proof of non-compliance, yet Ola Electric has the audacity to point their fingers back at the authorities. Their arrogant management needs to be shown their place by the government officials.

I'm very interested looking at their sales number considering Ola isn't publishing their sales figure even with Auto Punditz. Could you pls share the source?

Vahan4 Dashboard gives you all details. Pan India, State and even RTO level data for all manufacturers. Monthwise. These are actual retail numbers registered in Vahan. There is always some spillover from the last days of the previous month.

Manufacturing is not everyone's cup of tea. It requires discipline & perseverance!

It is easier to copy Uber & create a company out of it, but it is much more difficult to do what BYD did.

Even then Ola claims their stores are all compliant.

Even with this, Ola have the audacity to counter claim that they sold 25k scooters in Feb.

This seems to be playing a la Sahara, who despite supreme court convicting and reprimanding them at every step, they used to take out big front page ad blaring they are all good and the authorities are victimising them.

Such pathetic losers .

I am reminded of one of the last scenes from the film Titanic. The ship is sinking, 95 % plus of its passengers are in full panic, simply rushing to escape from the nearly tilted Titanic. But a band in attendance on board is undettered by the horrified surroundings and keeps on playing their music unhindered though noone is in a mood to listen. Ola management is playing a role akin to this band.

Rosmerta files insolvency plea against Ola Electric Technologies subsidiary over payment default.

The insolvency petition has been filed at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) at a time when Ola Electric’s vehicle registration process transformation is in its final stages.
