How do you store your riding gear?

Hello all,

As the time goes, the number of motorcycle gears have started piling up in my house and I am looking for ways to store the ones.

If you can share the how you are storing the gear with pictures and links to products, it would be great. Hopefully this thread can be used as one stop reference/inspiration to store their gear properly.

I do believe a gentlemen had shared a custom fabricated rack and I haven't been able to locate that post.

I did try going through google/ amazon, but the products shown do not seems solid and sturdy enough to withstand the weight of a full riding suit and textile jacket and pant put together.

So please do share what is working for you.

Re: How do you store your riding gear?

I don’t have motorcycle gear but I do have my race gear (helmet, shoes, gloves, suit, balaclava, neck brace, etc.)

For the suit use the suit bag that it came with/any other suit cover used for formal suits. Hang this in your wardrobe.

For the helmet, I have a dedicated helmet bag which I got with the helmet, gloves go in their pouch which then goes in the helmet bag. Ensure a proper felt lined helmet bag is used as the pouch type ends up touching the paint and swirling it.

Shoes go in a plastic shoe box to keep dust out. You can get these on Amazon.

ATGATT means you wear at least one set even at home duh. Jokes aside, I just hang them with the curtains. The plastic hanger I have breaks under the weight of the suit and at the moment I replace it like knee sliders, which I am not terribly happy about. If anyone can point me to sturdy suit hangers I'd be grateful

Same, i use two plastic hangers to bear the weight of the jacket. The helmet has a dedicated perch ( for active one) and the inactive one is aired out and cleaned and kept in storage. Same with gloves.

Re: How do you store your riding gear?

While I'm also considering picking a dedicated rack for storing my gear once my pants and boots come, in the interim I've found using these metal over door hooks quite helpful.

To hold up the weight of the jacket, heavier duty coat hangers like these do the trick.

Re: How do you store your riding gear?

I have a dedicated cupboard of 4’x2’ , one of the plastic nilkamal items to store all my biking and cycling gear. The two helmets are stored on top and I ensure that the lids are opened to air then continuously. They are in a well ventilated room that doesn’t get direct sunlight.

Gloves, protectors are kept in the cupboard. After a long ride, I remove the protectors and wash my jacket and riding pants and store them in my clothes cupboard. But if I go for a breakfast ride, I just ensure that it is aired for a couple of days before putting it back. It all depends on the heat and how much I have sweated.

Re: How do you store your riding gear?

I have following gears:

1. Two Helmets (full face, ECE certified, double D ring)
2. Riding gloves for city.
3. DSG riding jacket for touring.
4. Full gauntlet leather gloves
5. Racing boots
6. Full body leather suit for track

I store all my track gear in a corrugated box with good amount of silica gel and store it in the loft.

The helmets have their own shelf in my house, I keep my city riding gloves and balaclava next to the helmet as I use them daily.
The DSG jacket goes in the cupboard using a hanger and some silica gel packets.

I thought I was the only one to store like that. Last year I did get some fungus and had to dry clean them

I thought so too 😅
Fungus is a real pain. Especially on leather and rubber based materials.
Since I use silica gel along with my camera equipments to keep fungus out, I used them on my riding gear as well and it’s doing good job so far.

From a motorcycle accessory brand:

https://shop.motousher.com/products/...r&_ss=e&_v=1.0

Else you will need to get a metal hanger or the hangers which are used for Coats / Sherwanis.

For long term motorcycle gear storage through a season of not riding:

1. Store leather gear like gloves in an airtight zip lock bag after a wash and leather gel application to keep them soft. These can go into the same suitcase as riding gear - see 3.

2. Wash helmet fully, air dry. Add camphor pellet in jute bag inside helmet. Cover with helmet cloth bag (to prevent dings and scratches. Add another plastic cover to seal the helmet and prevent air. Such large ziplock may not be available. I simply used a big thick plastic cover. Put the entire thing into the helmet carton box your helmet came with.

3. Wash both jacket and pants and allow to air dry. Pack into a suitcase
- not an organic carton box. Organic boxes decompose. Bugs love newspapers and carton boxes. Add camphor pellets into a jute bag and chuck them into the same suitcase. You may add multiple jute bags filled about a quarter of camphor and layer them around the suitcase for maximum coverage.

Camphor is anti fungal, and also kills dust mites.

4. Riding boots are tricky. Wash and clean them as appropriate. Airtight plastic cover will be suitable and stack in a cold dark place - no sun. At the moment I am yet to complete this exercise with my riding boots.

Glad that you have started this thread on riding gear storage. For us riders, riding gear is akin to that of jewellery to woman and the desire to own more never ends.
My recommendation to store the riding gear would be to store it in the garments wardrobe, IMHO that’s the best way to keep it safe. Further, leather jackets need some extra care to keep it safe from damages, regularly examining and polishing helps to great extent. I’ll post some images of my riding gears wardrobe :-
