Ola begins production of Roadster X electric motorcycle

Ola Electric has commenced production of the Roadster X electric motorcycle. This was confirmed via images posted by Ola Electric CEO Bhavish Aggarwal on social media.

On January 20, Aggarwal shared an image of the Roadster X as it was being assembled on the production line. Since then, he has also put out a couple of videos of him riding the e-bike around the Ola facility.

The Roadster X is available with three battery options: 2.5 kWh, 3.5 kWh and 4.5 kWh, and a range of up to 200 km. It has a 14.7 BHP electric motor that enables the bike to accelerate from 0-40 km/h in 2.8 seconds and has a top speed of 124 km/h.

Prices for the Ola Roadster X start at Rs 74,999 (ex-showroom).

Re: Ola begins production of Roadster X electric motorcycle

Ola's have terrible riding dynamics. Don't be disguised by the figures. Let's see how good the handling of this bike is, especially with the heavy battery pack and chassis design (doesn't look impressive to me). My nearby service center have so many Ola's lying around. No parts available. They have only one option, to replace whatever stops functioning. Repair is out of question. Also, only one mechanic in the whole service center.

Let's see what the first batch of consumers for Ola bike have to say. Don't rush into it.

That sprocket ratio!
This will chew through the front sprocket and chain before anything else fails

Ola doesn't need to do all this, just a better scooter would have taken them to the next level with happy customers. I don't know whether the car project is still on or scrapped. Good luck!

I am interested to know more about this. Can you explain a bit?

A smaller sprocket or a spline in a motor will always be small. But in any geared or chain system, this is how it's done and it will wear out faster than bigger gear or sprocket.

Unlike the engine which has a lower rpm, motors can spin much faster and it makes sense to use a smaller sprocket resulting in more acceleration and torque.

At really low rpm (typically 3 digit or less), the PMSM motor is making more than 150% torque compared to it's continous torque figures.

If you put a bigger sprocket in the motor, the instant torque of the motor will snap or bend the chain. Engines have a clutch to absorb the torque.

Sorry I'm traveling and hence the short replies. But below thread on the Unofficial Royal Enfield forum has a good discussion on this topic that you can go through (only 3 pages but good amount of counterviews and explanations)

https://forum.classicmotorworks.com/...?topic=34335.0

TL;DR: It has to do with no. of teeth actually in contact with chain, high rpm --> higher radial velocity, higher loading of individual teeth.

@Mods : I hope it is ok to share link to a different forum? No advertising or affiliation as such. Purely academic puposes

Again keeping it short to these two para

1. Yes, you'll always have a "smaller" sprocket on driver shaft and bigger on driven but the thumb rule for gear/sprocket reduction is that you don't go beyond 4:1 reduction in a single step to take care of efficiency, wear, sizing etc. Here i think it'll be closer to 6:1 range. For such a ratio, it's better to do it in two steps.

2. The so called instant torque is still a controlled torque and can be calibrated for the vehicle. I never meant to say bigger sprocket should be on motor. Also a clutch absolutely DOES NOT absorb torque!

Any idea what the seat height is going to be like? For a short person like me the seat height for Oben Rorr EZ, was a bit on the higher side.

1st point is up for debate, it's a trade off you have to make with the motor operating rpm range and the torque.

Most DIY EV car conversions retain the clutch, since a direct coupling to the gear box shreads the spline or the coupler. This happens when the vehicle is stationary and there is a obstacle to overcome and the fact that the original gearbox input shaft was not designed to handle such high torque of a electric motor. The springs I am talking about are the 3 to 4 coil springs located in friction plate and not the pressure plate spring, it dampens the initial torque until the spring compress fully.

Torque can be controlled but they still have a minimum torque which is very very high at 3 digit rpm.

Re: Ola begins production of Roadster X electric motorcycle

75k looks like a decent price but then I'm reminded of what the brand is. With Ola, let me be honest, sprocket kit wearing off would be the least of my worries. There're bigger fears, if you know what I mean (yes, you know).

I think we need to properly research the chain-sprocket size-to-life assumptions before we can conclude something.
A bigger sprocket may spread the torque caused wear over more teeth, thus causing lesser damage. As for the front, it might be expected to wear faster, but then since the teeth are less, we might as well see less chain slack on the front being worn out, which means the wear might not even be detected till the end.
My point is, there's no point with talks contradicting each other. And nothing can be concluded without research.

Then again, not a single person mentioned metallurgy. How come? Stronger chain alloy will result in sprockets absorbing the wear more, and vice versa. We can ignore metallurgy for standardised chain sprockets from Rolon or so, but this Ola's kit looks anything but off the shelf Rolon, so this is a point too.

Then, the big, BIG variable:- on any tested bike, if you conclude that a bigger rear sprocket lasts less, you have totally ignored the lower gearing(which happened due to the sprocket itself), which caused lower distance travelled anyways, ruining the longetivity stats for any undergeared setup.
To ensure a fair test, the gearing must not change even though sprockets change. This is rare to achieve.
My own '13 Duke 390 is on larger rear sprocket and now it seems the kit will be replaced at 12k something, but its undergeared.

Anyhow, knowledge debate aside, what happened to that Rs. 2.5L Roadster Pro is what I'm more interested in.
They announced that right before their IPO, so... will it happen?
Is a 580 kms ranged(or even 200 for that matter) 200 kmph bike possible for 2.5L?

Do you really want to ride an Ola bike at 120 Kmph? Let alone 200. For 2.5L, it would be no miracle, and they would most likely have to use sub-standard parts or, cheaply imported ones from China. I don't have any high expectations.

The Roadster X is one of 3 motorcycles Ola has planned, with the other two being the Roadster Pro and Roadster. The Roadster X will be offered in three variants, with prices starting at Rs 74,999 (ex-showroom).

In terms of its design, the Roadster X looks like a commuter bike. It has a rectangular wraparound LED headlamp with a digital instrument console on top and a flat seat.

The suspension setup comprises a telescopic fork at the front and dual shock absorbers at the rear. It has alloy wheels and a front disc brake.

^How can the roadster 6 kWh be cheaper than the S1 pro+ with 5.3 kWh battery.
