Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!

It's time to look back at the year and cast your vote for The Team-BHP Two Wheeler of the Year. This is where YOU - the BHPian - will choose our Two-Wheeler of 2024. The Team-BHP 2WOTY is by owners & enthusiasts, not advertorial experts & paid jury members. Just as well since us bike owners are the ones who pay the industry's bills .

Listed below are the launches of 2024.
  • The contenders have been sorted in a price-ascending order (cheapest first).
  • It's only ALL-NEW bikes that are included in our 2WOTY award. That excludes the "refreshed" headlamp & tail-light versions, facelifts and engine variants.
  • This is a public poll. Other BHPians will be able to see what bike you have voted for.
  • Models costing over ~20 lakh rupees and a few niche players have been excluded from our 2WOTY. Reason = Low relevance & commitment to the Indian marketplace.
  • Note that the list does not include the bikes that will be launched in December. The reason being that it would be a new product of which neither we nor BHPians would've taken a test ride to form an opinion. There would be no ownership reviews or posts, hence such bikes would be included next year.
  • Link to Team-BHP's 2WOTY 2023
  • As has always been the case, we insist there will only be ONE Team-BHP Two Wheeler of the Year. Why? Simply because we don't believe in handing out an award for the "headlamp of the year" or "footpeg of the year" (as examples). Some award ceremonies have 25 awards to ensure there's one for each bike manufacturer (aka advertiser) in India. We have no such inclination, and will only focus on the best, most important new two-wheeler of 2024.

Looking forward to your votes, and also the reasoning behind your choice. Thanks!

-----------------------------------------------------

EDIT on 10th December 2024:

Grabbing ~27 % of the votes on this poll, the Aprilia RS 457 is the Team-BHP Motorcycle of the Year, 2024!

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-dsc07373.jpg

We had an amazing list of launches this year IMHO - from the Royal Enfield Interceptor Bear 650 to the BSA Gold Star 650, from the TVS Jupiter 110 to the Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG. Kudos to TVS and Bajaj for coming up with such impressive features on their mass-market commuters that even the enthusiasts community has taken due notice!

But none of these products have captured as much global appeal as the Aprilia RS 457.

The RS 457 is the brand's first Indian foray into motorcycles, but Aprilia pulled off a masterstroke by manufacturing the RS 457 in India at Piaggio’s plant in Baramati near Pune. By making in India for the world, Aprilia delivered on quality with its excellent aluminium dual-beam chassis, mini-superbike looks and paint finish, best in class instrumentation, etc - all the while ensuring a very competitive pricing that undercuts equivalent twin-cylinder rivals significantly. The star of the show, however, is the 457cc twin-cylinder motor that produces a segment-best 47 BHP & 43.5 Nm coupled with an excellent, communicative and forgiving handling package that makes the RS 457 as good on the track as it is on the roads.

Way to go Aprilia! Hoping to see a lot more from the brand over the coming months - starting with improvements to the product (brakes in particular) and the dealer network. Looking forward to the imminent launch of the Tuono 457 and also keeping fingers crossed that the Tuareg 457 will make an appearance next year end as well.

Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG - Review thread

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-first_post__main.jpg

Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG Pros

• A concept that can possibly revolutionize the market! Rising popularity of e-commerce and bike taxis makes a big business case for a CNG bike
• Well-engineered product; not a half-baked afterthought. Nicely calibrated CNG system
• Well-kitted for the segment. Features include LED headlamp, alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, digital instrument cluster, connected features, etc.
• Simple yet modern design language that will blend well with a variety of demographics
• Very easy to ride in the city
• Comfortable ride; tackles average broken roads effortlessly

Bajaj Freedom 125 CNG Cons

• Highway performance is mediocre
• Missing safety features such as ABS
• Many Indian cities & towns don’t have CNG pumps. Queue for CNG can be long in metro cities
• Cost cutting in a few areas such as the buttons for the instrument cluster, indicators, etc.
• As a global first-of-a-kind product, long-term performance and reliability are unknown
• Priced at a premium of ~Rs. 15,000 to 30,000 compared to competitors in a very price-sensitive segment

Hero Mavrick 440 - Review thread

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-2024_hero_mavrick_resized_42.jpg

Hero Mavrick 440 Pros

• Single-cylinder, 440cc engine has good low-end torque to make city riding comfortable. Fairly responsive mid and top-end keep highway cruising engaging
• Superb ride comfort; gobbles up bad roads without letting the rider, or even pillion feel them
• NVH and refinement are really good. Combined with good ergonomics, you can cruise at 80-100 km/h all day long
• Features such as standard dual-channel ABS, Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation etc. are standard on all variants. Top variant gets e-sim connectivity
• Hero's sales and service network is unparalleled, even in tier 2 and 3 towns
• Well priced for what it offers. Undercuts most competitors

Hero Mavrick 440 Cons

• Very basic instrumentation cluster in terms of look, feel and functionality
• Missing features such as riding modes, traction control, upside-down suspension fork, etc.
• Built to a cost. Cost-cutting is evident in a couple of areas
• Ride gets unsettled at higher speeds
• To many people, the Hero brand doesn't have the badge cachet of Royal Enfield, Honda or Harley-Davidson
• Long-term reliability of the new engine is unknown

re: Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!

Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 - Review thread

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-intro2.jpg

Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 Pros

• All-new, well-rounded and well-differentiated roadster from the Himalayan platform
• Sporty and youthful motorcycle, targeted at a younger audience. More exciting colourways than with any Royal Enfield motorcycle ever
• Looks substantial compared to some rivals, with a long wheelbase and some elements like the tyres being the largest in class
• Very approachable motorcycle with a seat height of 780 mm and a kerb weight 11 kg lighter than the Himalayan. Feels well balanced as well, not top-heavy!
• 39.5 BHP Sherpa engine has been retuned for a very peppy midrange. Refinement levels are slightly better than the Himalayan too
• Slick 6-speed gearbox with a decently light slip and assist clutch helps to stay in the torque band all day long. Best experienced between 3,000 to 6,000 rpm
• Competent city ride and handling package from Showa - compliments the urban nature of the motorcycle well
• Excellent instrument cluster carried over from the Himalayan - now with updated features. Navigation, though not a perfect implementation, is still useful

Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450 Cons

• Not for everyone! With its scrambler-inspired looks and loud colourways, the Guerrilla is set to polarize opinion
• The Sherpa motor has a slightly erratic idle, followed by a slightly jerky low-end below 2000 rpm - best kept within the torquey mid-range even when in the city. Not newbie-friendly
• Single-cylinder vibrations, though made smoother now compared to the Himalayan, are present throughout the revv range. No deal-breaking resonance experienced at any rpm range, but certainly not dismissible either
• Runs hot - The radiator fan was unexpectedly busy even on rainy and cold Bangalore days. Summer performance needs to be monitored
• Suspension is good for the city but feels significantly less sophisticated than in the Himalayan when ridden hard. 11L fuel tank could also affect touring abilities!
• Poor lamps all around. The headlamp is woefully inadequate and the quirky new indicator stalk + tail lamp vibrate on bad roads, making it blurry for traffic behind
• Fit and finish could be improved. Good overall build is marred by poor execution of touchpoint items like the joystick switch, indicator switch, etc. Also, the stock mirror is useless at highway speeds
• Missing features for rider control like traction control, IMU / cornering ABS, quick shifter, adjustable clutch and brake levers, backlit switchgear, etc.

Husqvarna Svartpilen 401 - Ownership thread

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-pho_bike_det_svartpilen4012024benefit05_sall_aepi_v1.jpg

Quote:
Husqvarna has launched the 2024 Svartpilen 401 in India. The bike is priced at Rs 2.92 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Svartpilen 401 shares its underpinnings with the KTM 390 Duke. Like its predecessor, it has a unique design, featuring a circular LED headlamp with an LED ring around it and a 5-inch digital instrument cluster. The bike now gets an underbelly exhaust.

The Svartpilen 401 is powered by a 399cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that makes 46 BHP @ 9,000 rpm and 39 Nm @ 7,000 rpm. The engine is mated with a 6-speed gearbox via a bi-directional quickshifter.

The Svartpilen 401 is equipped with a 43 mm adjustable WP USD front fork and a monoshock at the rear. The brake setup consists of Bybre disc brakes and Bosch dual-channel ABS.

BSA Gold Star 650- Review thread

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-2024_bsa_goldstar_650_resized_02.jpg

BSA Gold Star 650 Pros

• Beautifully designed with well-proportioned, quintessential classic looks
• Peach of an engine is the highlight of the overall package. Smooth, vibration free with lots of punch across the usable rev range
• Smooth 5-speed gearbox doesn't really give the feeling of a missing 6th, as is sometimes the case
• Excellent braking setup overall. High quality Brembo brakes provide more than adequate bite and combine well with the nice progressive feedback offered by the levers
• Low seat height coupled with a comfortable and upright riding stance make it an easy choice for newer riders
• A mechanically and electronically simple bike in keeping with its classic genre
• The bike is versatile in its use case, with the engine being good for city duties as well as being punchy enough to cover highway miles

BSA Gold Star 650 Cons

• The aesthetically pleasing design is let down in some places with tacky finishing like stickers on prominent panels, basic quality of switchgear, misaligned buttons / parts etc.
• Taller riders may find the bike slightly cramped and the overall riding ergonomic comfort is compromised in part by the extremely soft seat cushioning
• Some practical limitations like tubed spoke wheels and lack of a main stand can complicate routine issues like repairing punctures, chain maintenance etc.
• Rear suspension is too soft and a bit too bouncy, specially on broken or uneven road surfaces that are common in India
• Classic Legends is still establishing its presence and this is a relatively new product from its stable. Long term reliability as well as quality of service will have to be assessed over time
• Pricing might be perceived as just a bit on the expensive side, especially since the company is still establishing its standing in India

Royal Enfield Interceptor Bear 650 - Related thread

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-bear650_lhs_wildhoney-1.jpg

Quote:
Last month, Royal Enfield took the wraps off the Bear 650 – a new scrambler model based on the Interceptor 650. The bike maker has now announced the prices for it. The Bear 650 is available in five colour options, with prices starting at Rs 3.39 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Bear 650 has a classic scrambler look with a circular LED headlamp, a single-pod instrument console at the front, and an exposed frame with a teardrop-shaped fuel tank. The bike is equipped with a single upswept exhaust, unlike the Interceptor, which has dual exhausts.

Powering the Bear 650 is the familiar 649cc parallel twin engine. It produces 46 BHP @ 7,250 rpm, but peak torque has been raised to 56.5 Nm @ 5,150 rpm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox.

The Bear 650 is fitted with a longer travel suspension with a Showa USD fork at the front and dual shock absorbers at the rear. The bike has a staggered wheel setup with a 19-inch spoked wheel in the front and a 17-inch rim in the rear. Braking is handled by discs with a 320 mm rotor at the front and a 270 mm disc at the rear, supported by switchable dual-channel ABS.

Aprilia RS 457 - Review thread

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-dsc07373.jpg

Aprilia RS 457 Pros

• Mini-superbike looks with spot-on proportions and exciting colour schemes that grab attention
• Powerful 457cc twin-cylinder motor that produces a segment-best 47 BHP & 43.5 Nm is effortlessly fast and has a wide torque band with good rideability
• Easy-going nature with sport touring ergonomics, light clutch and positive gearshifts
• Excellent handling with a communicative and forgiving chassis, well-tuned and adjustable suspension setup and grippy tyres
• Touring potential with a 13L fuel tank, optional high windscreen, optional USB charging and provisions for strapping luggage
• Exudes quality - excellent paint finish, best-in-class 5" colour TFT instrumentation, aluminium dual-beam chassis and triple clamp upper plate, etc.
• Made in India. Pricing has been well-received and undercuts equivalent twin-cylinder rivals significantly

Aprilia RS 457 Cons

• Looks can be polarizing for a mature customer. No hint of subtlety with either the design or colour schemes
• Lacks the top-end rush of some rivals. Torque band is very wide and useable, but drops closer to redline
• Brakes could have better initial bite. Rear brake especially feels spongy, at least for track usage
• Lack of IMU/Cornering ABS. Few good-to-have features like USB charging, bi-directional quickshifter, TPMS, adjustable clutch and brake levers, etc. are offered only as accessories
• Aprilia's tiny dealer and service network is a concern

BMW CE 02 - Review thread

Team-BHP Motorcycle / Scooter of the Year, 2024. Edit: It's the Aprilia RS 457!-r0000276.jpg

BMW CE 02 Pros

• A simple, fun and quirky electric commuter with radical styling, great practicality and usability, targeted at urban dwellers looking for something different yet niche in the premium electric commuter space
• Solid build quality and top-notch fit and finish. Leagues ahead of similarly spec'd ICE vehicles
• Well engineered to be quite lightweight, nimble and agile at parking speeds and on the move
• Stellar dynamics and small turning radius make it flickable in traffic and squeeze into cramped parking lot gaps
• Fantastic motor with peppy acceleration for urban rideability coupled with excellent braking and a balanced suspension setup makes for a very enjoyable city riding experience
• Well-sorted rider ergonomics with flexible seating positions, allow for various riding postures, making it easy for shorter and taller riders alike.
• Surprisingly comfortable despite its deceptively compact proportions and bench-like seat
• Packed with features such as multiple riding and regen modes, built-in smartphone holder, USB-C charging port, reverse mode, keyless operation, heated grips, etc.

BMW CE 02 Cons

• No under-seat storage and no luggage space of any sort makes it lose out on practicality compared to other electric scooters in the market
• Bench-like flat single seat is next to useless for taking a pillion along even for short commutes unless both the rider and pillion are short and are built small
• Hefty price tag puts it out of reach of most aspirants in the commuter space
• Estimated real-world range of under 100 km is a tad disappointing. Heavy usage will need a fair bit of planning and frequent charging
• Minimalistic design layout of instrument console with tiny screen needs constant scrolling to display even essential information
• Cannot be charged at public charging stations. Battery isn't removable either
• Single-channel ABS in a premium product is a disappointment in today's day and age
• Soft suspension setup makes it unsuitable for riding at higher speeds

Brixton Crossfire 500 - Related thread

The Brixton Crossfire is a scrambler-style motorcycle. It is available in two variants: 500X and 500XC, priced at Rs 4.74 lakh and Rs 5.19 lakh. While the 500 X is more road-biased, the 500 XC is built to go off-road and has a raised front fender and knobbly tyres.

The 500XC is equipped with a 19-inch wirespoke wheel at the front and a 17-inch wheel at the rear. The 500X, on the other hand, has 17-inch rims at both ends.
