BMW Motorrad F 450 GS concept unveiled

BMW Motorrad has unveiled the near-production-ready BMW Concept F 450 GS at EICMA 2024 - which will be the new A2 license ADV from the brand designed to slot between the BMW G 310 and F 800/900.

The BMW Concept F 450 GS will be powered by a brand new twin-cylinder inline engine, developed from scratch and promises to deliver the full 48 hp as maximum limited for the A2 class along with claimed superior torque even at low revs.

What could we expect in a production version? Johann Simon, vehicle project manager of the Concept F 450 GS, explains: "No compromises for sure. Following the very sporty off-road focus of the Concept F 450 GS, we will implement the bike as close as possible to this concept. We will only adjust the seat height for better accessibility and easier handling. As an alternative to the cross-spoke wheels (19 inches front, 17 inches rear), lightweight but high-strength cast aluminium wheels in the same dimensions are also conceivable."

BMW Motorrad plans to present the corresponding series vehicle in the style of the Concept F 450 GS in 2025.

Re: BMW Motorrad F 450 GS concept unveiled

Any word on where it'll be built?

I hope TVS builds it right here in India. Aprilia 457s, KTM 390s, Royal Enfields, BMW's own 310s are all India made. That'd mean we could see a multi cylinder TVS derivative as well.

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motor...650-rival.html (Rumour: TVS working on a Royal Enfield 650 rival)

This thread speculated the partner to be Norton.

The original source for that discussion was from ToI, issue with non auto media reporting on automotive scoops and stuff is they'll always think the product is a <insert segments leader's name here> rival.

Re: BMW Motorrad F 450 GS concept unveiled

I’m just loving the look of this baby GS. The ~400 - 450 cc ADV segment is going to be extremely exciting over the next 6 - 24 months. We’re talking (from certain to likely to possible) about the brilliant looking all new KTM 390 Adventure R; Hero 400 cc at some point; Tuareg 457; Himalayan 450 Rally and this stunning twin cylinder GS 450. What a time to be a motorcyclist in India with 4.5 - 5.5 to spend.

While we’re at it, this video below begs a view as well.

I just got a scrambler 400x last week. But, I think in 2 years this will be the bike I am going to move! This bike seems to have the potential to be the best < 500cc dual sport bike!

It looks like a bike made of lego parts and you know what, it looks stunning. I love bikes with coloured frames that just end in the middle of the engine like the 1390 superduke and it is exciting to see it available at a hopefully lower price point. Hope they retain that stubby end can in the production version

Easily the best looker so far. Better than the Tuono 457. This seems so much more attractive to me than the KTM's. However, I'm hoping TVS manufactures a local version of this 450. BMW service cost is just ludicrous in India. Even our automotive media has found it impossible to justify (wrt BMW 310s). This 450 would be the current pick for replacement of my Speed 400 unless Triumph brings in their (low capacity) twin cylinder with Bajaj in a few years time. BMW does this colour scheme good.

Oh my god!
What a beautiful motorcycle.

While I find the new KTM 390 ADV ugly, this one, is beautiful to my eyes.

Hoping this arrives in India next year.

Interesting concept but knowing BMW, pricing would be out of reach for most. To be honest though, I dislike this current gen headlight design. The old 1250 series design was the best. Same with the S1000R's front end, BMW seems to lose the design plot every few generations or so.

Hey. I actually feel otherwise (but if I’m missing some badly priced model let me know). When you consider the GS range, which BMW pricing are you premising this off actually?

If you think about it, the 310 GS pricing is very much in the zip code of its competition. The 900 GS is cheaper than its most direct competitor, the Triumph 900s as well as the Desert X. The 1300 GS was very competitively priced compared to the outgoing 1250s - its not dramatically different from the Tiger 1200s (not a completely fair comparison given the latter barely sells) and its significantly cheaper than its other direct competitor, the Multistrada V4S.

They are possibly more expensive to maintain than many of their immediately competition specially in the lower end of the range, not so much in the superbike range. (I am not positively sure about this, just my guess).

310 GS is priced more than the Interceptor. Not sure why I would pay that much for a bike which produces less power and is notorious for being vibey. Not to forget the single cylinder. This concept being a twin, BMW will not spare you with pricing. When you add their service costs on top, it turns out to be an expensive affair. Will it be worth it? To a select set of people, yes but to most, I don't think so. Also, a bike with this front end is not to my taste.

Maybe the bigger GS models are competitively priced, but definitely not their 310 range.

Understood - I assumed you were comparing like for like formats of bike. You’re right that the Interceptor definitely delivers great value at its particular price point - fully agree with that. That logic could apply for the Interceptor against any of the bikes mentioned below.

But when I made the pricing point, I was only comparing with its actual competitors - the 390 ADV and the Himalayan 450. The 310 GS is in comparable price band of both these bikes although being the most dated of the lot it is currently a bit underspecced compared to both the above (personally I believe the Himalayan is definitely a better product than both the above).

Personally in most scenarios I am unlikely to cross shop between an Interceptor and the ADV models mentioned above. I’m looking at EITHER the former OR the latter depending on what sort of bike I want.

Agree with you. In our market though, comparisons happen between bikes which are at similar price levels rather than sticking to formats strictly. Also, let's say I want a twin cylinder ADV at an accessible price. Practically, no options. Maybe this BMW 450 can change that but I won't be holding my breath for it.

Personally, I don't even consider the 310 range to be real BMWs.

The 310GS riding posture is something special.

When I look at the F 450GS, I can’t help but feel BMW might've repeated KTM's mistake with the Adventure rider triangle.

The 310GS's true strength lies in its adventure geometry—it’s got that perfect triangle that lets you fly 8 feet off the ground and land like you’re gliding, no sweat, no stress. It’s pure off-road confidence.

Take a look at the KTM 390 Adventure and the BMW F 450GS. Honestly, I’m concerned they just won't match the comfort and readiness of the 310GS for real off-road action.

Re: BMW Motorrad F 450 GS concept unveiled

I just came across the news that TVS will be making the F 450 GS. Can anyone corroborate if this is indeed true? I haven’t come across any other sources quoting the same.

If it is going to be made in India, then we’re definitely in for a treat, considering all the potential variations this powertrain platform could spawn . However, I don’t think it’ll be available for anything less than 5.5L on road though .

Cheers!

I'd take that with a big bucket of salt.
