Sales trend Legacy vs New player in E2W market

October 2024: Electric Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis-legacyvsnew.png

Data Source - Vahan Dashboard
  1. E2Ws had almost the best sales month of the year. The numbers were just behind the Mar'24 numbers when FAME-II subsidy ended.
  2. OLA's twitter fiasco (read here (CCPA issues showcause notice to OLA electric over consumer complaints)) had an impact on sales. They tried to save it by bringing OLA BOSS sale. But still that was not enough to make it a bumper month for OLA. It was a mediocre month given the sales that they have already achieved this year.
  3. Ather had a good month but not as good as other players. May be some of OLA's bad luck rubbed off on them as well
  4. TVS, Bajaj and Hero - It was a bumper sales month for the legacy manufacturers posting best numbers of the year. The legacy players cumulatively sold more E2Ws than new players in the month of October
  5. Greaves Electric/Ampere continues to post negative YoY numbers

Not surprised at TVS and Athers numbers. They are solid and both have had the early mover advantage.

However, what is surprising is Bajaj and how it has emerged with a relatively basic scooter. And I am still surprised by Ola maintaining the lead in spite of all the consumer complaints. While the former (Bajaj's surge) indicates a conservative mindset of the buyer with known service centers and the service model, Ola is the exact opposite with a lot of service issues but a fantastic (may be the best) value for the product itself (sans service). It almost seems like buyers are bucketised into conservative (Bajaj), nearly conservative (TVS), want the best and don't mind paying more(Ather), want the most value and would not mind the risk of service (Ola).

Is there any data about geographies of where these products are bought? Between Bajaj and TVS it could be just a matter of who has better sales and service in that particular city/town.

My 2 cents on Ola sales: Ola gave heavy discounts in October for Dushehra, so much so that ARAI had even sent a notice questioning price cuts. If not for the price cuts, Ola could have come in 2nd position

How is an Ola, which is basically a hack job on a european electric scooter, the best product sans 'just service issues' ?

I'm pretty sure there are plenty of owners on this forum alone who had very significant parts failures within a few months into the ownership and that paints a very different story about 'the best product' for the price. It's a poorly put together product with zero R&D in the Indian environment and they are putting together stuff as they go. I'm pretty sure those 'service issues' are due to the poorly designed and engineered product in the first place. Multiple front suspension failures sending owners into the hospital don't feel like the qualities of a good product. There were multiple documented fire cases as well.

On the other hand, the legacy brands like TVS and Bajaj kept it simpler but didn't skimp on the most important aspect of a vehicle, solid R&D and build quality. Even the new-ish kid on the block, the Ather did a great job with their scooters. If you see one Chetak and one Ola side by side, you can pick out the absolutely horrendous fit & finish and cost cutting on an Ola to keep a low price and perceived VFM tag.

The truth is, scooters are a very conservative segment. You don't need to have a scooter with a million miles of range or neck snapping acceleration. It needs to do the basic stuff right and should have a decent enough range to not charge for 3-4 days. Most owners don't ride their scooters more than 10-20kms a day and for that the iCubes and Chetaks are plenty.

I did not say Ola is the best product, but said it has the best value. There is a difference between saying it's the best product versus saying it has the most value (which means for the price, it give you a lot more than what others are giving).

Calling it a hack job is taking it to an extreme. Let's critizise the ones that deserve to be. Service - big problem with Ola. Product - i don't think it's bad at all. That's why it's sales are so high in spite of the service issues.
